Bibury Sunday March 16th was decided for a walking reunion for a group of people who had trekked through The Himalayas in November and had now become firm friends. As we were from various points of the South West of England, it was suggested that we chose somewhere between South Wales and Wiltshire. So the Cotswolds were chosen and in particular a 6 mile circular walk from Bibury. I had never heard of this place before, but when I mentioned it to a few people, I was told it was one of the mos beautiful places in the UK, so I was really looking forward to it. I prayed for good weather considering the amount of rain we had suffered for the last couple of months, but was prepared for a pretty muddy walk never the ... read more

Excursion to Bibury We were going to catch the bus 12:30 for Bibury. Unfortunately, the bus didn't turn up. Mark rang the Cotswolds Green, the bus company, to enquire, and found that the next bus would be at 15:30. We decided to take the taxi. While I was in the taxi, I realised that No.855 bus runs between Mondays and Thursdays. It was our fault that we didn't realise the dates that the 855 bus runs. The taxi driver was very friendly, and he said that Bibury is a very beautiful village. He dropped us off at the Trout Farm. Mark gave tips to the taxi driver for his kindness and friendly manner. We soon were able to recognise the Swan Hotel, and the River Colin. Mark and I had a picnic lunch by the river. ... read more

Just a few quick photos of some little country excursions taken recently. Okay, I admit it. This is the worst summer weather we have ever experienced but we are determined not to let it put us off the UK! Some days it has been beautiful and we have been able to have some great walks. We have done lots of Thames walks, a short walk at Virginia Water Lakes and have also been out to The Cotswolds again. For the record... I'M IN LOVE WITH THE COTSWOLDS. There, it's out in the open now. Just wanted everyone to know.. We did the loop around Bibury / Ablington and only managed to get lost a few times. It was a very nice walk that took us past some of the most beautiful English cottages imaginable and across ... read more

On Saturday I went with some friends to two cutesy little English villages - Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water. Rick Steves in his guidebook notes of Bourton-on-the-Water, "I can't figure out whether they call this "the Venice of the Cotswolds" because of its quaint canals or its miserable crowds." Yes, and yes, even though I only saw one canal. But more on that later. First, Bibury. We arrived early-ish in the morning on A SUNNY DAY!!! Yes, they have them here in England!! There was nobody about, so we spent a while taking pictures of all the little duckies that live in Bibury. NOTE: The rest of this entry was lost due to the website crashing. If you have a copy in your cache, please notify Mary-in-Gloucestershire. ... read more

Bibury is a picturesque village, as so many are, so we walked around and saw the trout stream, row cottages, and flower gardens. Then we went off into a river valley, which sounds tame, but the walking was a series of ups and down, woods, vales, and a few fields. Villages and groups of houses with gardens were scattered along the trail. The ColnRiver is tiny - narrow enough to step across in places. After lunch we had a relatively short walk, mostly through woods. We arrived at Chedworth Roman Villa. This is the excavation of a Roman-style villa, or estate, thought to belong to British Romanized gentry. Visiting was an option we all took. There was a short video explaining the site. In the central meeting house, the mosaic floor has several sections still in ... read more
