Off to Dartmoor today! So, I learned a lesson today - if you're in Dartmoor you need a proper GPS. Or a car. Or both haha. I got... not lost but stuck shall we say because I didn't want to keep going down some random valley in the bushes and get lost. There are no signs in the paths and there are a lot of intertwining ones so having the map with you doesn't even help… What a shame. Ok backtrack. I bussed up to Newton Abbot and wandered around the village for a bit - small and cute - before heading up to Haytor Vale in Dartmoor. Basically as soon as I started the hike I was like 'yep this won't end well' haha. Right from the start there are four paths generally going in ... read more

'I've got some rheas out back. Raised 'em from eggs I did. They're awful friendly.' In his heavy Devon accent, the elderly bewhiskered man at the gate of his lonely Dartmoor cottage attempted to detain me a little longer with irrelevant chat. It seemed that not many tourists from Hertfordshire, or indeed from anywhere, stop at this remote spot in response to his 'Fresh Eggs' sign propped up by a rock near the tall hedge. 'It's eggs you're wantin' ain't it?' 'I've only got hens' eggs. That alright?' He disappeared, leaving his two scruffy dogs seeking attention and barking madly. A few minutes later, he returned holding a grey cardboard carton containing six brown eggs with bits of straw and feathers attached. A label on the carton proclaimed: 'Laid by the girls living on Dartmoor'. They ... read more

We went for a walk starting finishing in Bellstone. The high moors are a bleak but beautiful landscape, supporting sheep and hardy plants like the Juniper tree and yellow flowered spikey bush Gorse. Some say it smells like coconuts AP thought so too but RM less so. It was both a cold and sunny day. We found a sheep’s jaw bone which RM took with him for good luck, but later went off of and left it. We tried to reach a high summit point but the Gorse was too thick and the ground too boggy for our wet feet, though we got some lovely views on the way back. We had a pint and dried our feet in the Tors in Bellstone. AP had some warm spicy cider RM the Cornwall Rock Ale, which is ... read more

Our first blog, but hopefully the start of many! Arrived in the Dartmoor national park on friday 30th dec 2011. Woodland springs 'adult only' touring park. The kids said it would be a 'keys in the pot' experience, but so far so good! A really quiet site, nice natural surroundings with a massive award winning shower block! bizarre. The owners are into recycling in a big way which is ok if you have the space to keep the waste separate. In a caravan it's a problem unless you constantly visit the bins. The weather isn't good in fact its just like our scottish trip - raining every day. Went to bellever forest new years eve and had a wonderful although wet walk with kelly and lily in the forest. Kelly generally stays close to us but ... read more

Almost all of our British friends say that the south western counties of Devon and Cornwall are must see UK destinations. After a few years this recommendation eventually sinks in, and so now hooked on the idea, and with Brian and Beth visiting, we organise a few days off work, hire a car, book some accommodation and, on a slightly overcast Saturday morning, set off to see what all the fuss is about. After a few hours driving our first stop on our great south west adventure is Cheddar Gorge in Somerset. The gorge is just outside the village of Cheddar and is (no surprise) where the cheese originated! The gorge is quite surprising because the countryside doesn’t seem to rise much and then all of a sudden we find ourselves in the middle of rocky ... read more

Lots of training since I last posted an entry. This includes a 101 mile ride around Dartmoor so I am up to doing the longest leg of the JoGLE which will be about 97 miles. However this will be after about 3 days of hard riding so it is not a true comparison. I have had the pleasing news that my daughters partner Ewen will be joining me for the first 4 days of the ride, JoG to Edinburgh, which will ease the potential lonliness until I am well on my way. Since my last entry I have managed to do some reseach ( Google ) on manboobs. Here is what I have found out. The medical name for the condition is gynecomastia. However most of us ( well maybe not you, particularly if you are ... read more

This is not the first time I wanted to visit Dartmoor region in Devonshire. Last time it was when I had a short stay in Exeter, but I never had an opportunity due to limited time. Having gone through all the options to get to Dartmoor, finally I stuck a deal with one of my good friend to drive all the way along to the Dartmoor for a pint of beer and trip to the nearest pub for a famous pub meal. The weather was exceptionally good. The spring has kicked off early in the year. We drove along the country lanes, passing many private dwells and farmlands. The landscape was slowly changing as the vehicle roared pass empty lanes. Saturday early morning is too early for many Brits. We took the advantage of the deserted ... read more

Thursday 10 June Castle Drogo and Dartmoor We were sad to leave our friends in Topsham but pleased to be on the road towards what was planned to be a restful week across the border in Cornwall. With hindsight, a fortnight might have have been restful - a week wasn't! Our journey today took us up to the very northern edge of Dartmoor, through the pretty village of Drewsteignton, to the weird and wonderful Castle Drogo. We’re certainly making good use of our National Trust membership - we’ve already more than recouped our outlay after visiting a handful of NT properties in the past couple of months. This extravagant pile with its forbidding exterior, the last castle to be built in England, was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, whose works included The Cenotaph in London, Thiepva ... read more

Second UK May Bank Holiday, spend it in London? Naaaah, why bother when there's a big park a few (or more) hours drive from London. Thsi weekend it was off with one of my beloved hiking groups to hike around the Moors with some side activities thrown in! Everyone on the trip managed to car share, so for me it was a cushy drive from South London (cushy because I was just a passenger, thanks Daryl!!). Everything was going to plan until we hit the 3 miles past Stonehenge - my tip is if possible avoid this area at all costs on the Friday of the long weekend - I could have run the 3 miles quicker and trust me, running isn't my strong point! The old 3 lanes, into 2, into 1 congestion cost us ... read more

Hello everyone! Long time no see! How are you all? I hope everybody is healthy, and that you haven't been sick with swine flu. Are you studying hard for your teachers? I am still in England at the moment. I am living with my mum and my sister, Cathryn. It is nice to be home because I can now eat lots of delicious English food that you can't buy in Korea. Ive also enjoyed spending lots of time with my family. I like being in England because - There are no mosquitoes! - The weather is much cooler than in Korea in summer time - There is lots of grass in England so we can play football without hurting ourselves - England has lots of beautiful countryside with lots of animals so ... read more
