Well, after bemoaning the lack of photos on the blog you'll be delighted to know that on looking at the full iPhoto file there are about 3500 pics! So to make life a tad less soporific I'm in the process of deleting vast swathes of seriously awful shots. Me in the tent, me and the bike, me cooking pasta and ragout for the zillionth time and a lot of other rubbish shots. I hope to post a couple of dozen exquisitely composed works of photographic art to encapsulate the glories and futilities of peddling 19800km. Don't hold your breath. It'll take a minute or two to create. Meanwhile, apart from some readjustment to single figure temperatures, wearing socks and shoes, saying 'Yes dear' to almost all Lins suggestions, getting the hang of grandfatherhood, life is continuing ... read more

Many people think that to have a good holiday you have to spend lots of money and go somewhere exotic. I found out this isn't the case when we drove down to Cornwall one half term. I have been surfing a few times and enjoy nothing more than spending hours trying to catch the perfect wave. The location of choice was a nice apartment in St Ives, one of the prettiest places I've ever been to in the UK. Cornwall is so pretty and Porthminster Beach is brilliant for surfing. We went on many coastal walks and although the weather was unpredictable, there is always something to do no matter if it is raining. When the sun is out I couldn't wish to be anywhere else but with my family through some fields there. Places in ... read more

"Why are you so obese? You really are obese!" These words were still raw. I admit to carrying a little puppy fat, too much cheap Asian street food earlier in the year being the culprit. But obese? Surely not. But these inquisitive words from a family member had hit a nerve. I was hoping that the upcoming challenge of walking 15 miles a day for three solid months would help send these words straight back in the direction they came from. As dawn broke on day two of our 1160 mile charity walk from Lands End to John o'Groats, the back spasms and stiff hamstrings filled me with dread. Our tent, saturated from condensation on the inside and out, was packed away in a soggy mess. Not in any way was I enthusiastic about spending another ... read more

Cornwall What can I possibly say about Cornwall? Nothing I can put into words will describe how amazing, beautiful, quaint and friendly this place is. The food is fantastic; the people will do anything for a fellow local (and probably a traveller as well); the views are never short of breathtaking; and above all the atmosphere of St. Ives in Cornwall is like nothing I have ever experienced before. It is bustling with small shops and markets yet at the same time it is a peaceful place where you can truly unwind and just relax and walk around the harbour. Truly an incredible piece of the world that not many people know about. We started our adventure in Cornwall by first of all getting off at the wrong stop, Camborne instead of St. Erth. We managed ... read more

To go home and see my family is always something exciting and a pleasure that I look forward to all year round. I love going back to see my Mum, Dad, Sister and our dog Dolly. This time round we arranged that we would go to my families house in Cornwall for a week to spend some time in the English riviera where there are wonderful beaches and some great seafood. The house is situated in a place called Carbis Bay that is connecting to the seaside town of St Ives that was made famous back in the Victorian times as a holiday resort. It is a picturesque town with many Fisherman stone cottages and small winding roads. It is a place that I hold dearly in my heart and love to go visit every time ... read more

We chose the easy walk because the medium one was too steep. It was a pleasure to meander along, looking over stone fences at farm gardens, enjoying wide vistas of fields and hedges, gently following the coastal path, and arriving in Land’s End for tea. Land’s End at last! We had been warned that Land’s End had been turned into “Disneyland” by a private developer. When we first saw it from afar, we could see a large building or buildings. Our route was circuitous, so we walked away from the landmark in the morning and approached it again in mid-afternoon. Walking along the coast, we had to be told this was Land’s End, otherwise it seems to be just another one of the endless coves and points of land. Indeed the waters of the Atlantic and ... read more

Our walks, as we chose them, became easier over the week. Sunday we chose the harder walk, as it was the easiest harder walk and we thought we would like Bob the guide best. Actually, he got lost a couple of times and led us along an unnecessarily steep, rocky, and muddy version of the Southwest Coastal Way. So my muscles were tired when we did Monday’s walk, led by Helen, someone who is probably a bit bored by the medium level walking. The paths were more to my liking, some coastal walking but also woodlands and fields. The weather changed by Tuesday, wind blowing and rain in repeated intervals. All along we could see our destination of St. Michael's Mount, a tidal island with a fort and castle. By the time we arrived in Praa ... read more

The wind is blowing hard. It was blowing hard last night, chilling the room. It was blowing hard on the headlands today while we walked, gusting inland. It was blowing hard yesterday while we walked around the village of St. Ives. Thursday and Friday the guides are altering our walking routes to avoid danger from the wind. And it’s often a cold wind. Today I wore pants over pants and gaiters and a light thermal undershirt, shirt, wool vest, fleece and jacket, plus a hat. At least I was warm! View the video Welcome to Pengwedhen. Laughter and fun are great memories of the week. We met some really nice people. Jeff and Ann are a soft spoken couple from Hull: Jeff very tall and gangly, keeping an eye out for us on the walks; Ann recovering from a knee operation, so participating in the easy walks. Martin and Evelyn joined us, or we them, for many meals: Martin a bit world-weary but with wit and genuine warmth; Evelyn not walking but a fun conversationalist. Peter and Gill are experienced in walking tours: Gill we rarely saw because she walked only harder routes; Peter was really helpful on our first hard walk, and he continued to chat, regardless of whether he was walking (medium or hard) or painting water colours. Moira is a retiring, soft spoken woman who was always ready to ... read more

The walking makes me feel as if my cells have been oxygenated! The pace is often a bit quick, so breathing is deep. The terrain on some walks has been challenging – too steep and rocky for my taste on some walks. A few stony sections with a few streams running through are fine, but steep up and down rocks are too much for my muscles and balance. Fortunately, the last few days have seen more rolling, dirt paths. The views are always stunning – bright green grass and leaves, ever-present gorse and heather (yellow and pinky mauve), dark hedges, and the constant drama of big white clouds and dark rain-filled clouds. We have often walked along the Southwest Coastal Path, marvelling at the pounding surf. This afternoon the deep power of the ocean was evid ... read more
