We decided to visit Lostwithiel, which lies tucked away in the Fowey Valley, on 19 September. We took the train from St Austell. Lostwithiel is one of the local stations in Cornwall. Nevertheless, this quiet town had a wealth of historic artefacts and buildings – Tudor Bridge, St Bartholomew Church, The Dutchy Palace, The Grammar School, Taprell House, all of which were built between 15th century and 18th century. We popped in the church and the museum. The museum has an interesting collection of artefacts which were all donated locally and wonderful photographic collection depicting the social history of the town since the end of the 18th century. I was impressed with the calendar with photos of local historic buildings of Lostwithiel and bought the one presented at the receptionist’s desk. We had planned visiting Restomel ... read more

So we did our test camp and I'm very glad we did as it we found some things that didn't work and found things that worked very well and things that need some work. We left Wiltshire at 0600 on the 30th March and headed to Cornwall. Traffic was very light and we got to Liskeard just after 0900 where we dropped the kids off at with their dad and headed on down towards Perranporth. We got there just before lunch and had a look around and got fish and chips. We Chicks got Fish and Chips and I had cheesy chips. We turned the seats round in Gabby had had lunch. We then went up to Chicks Aunt and had supper before going to bed. The next day Chicken had realized that she had left ... read more

We decided that a test camp would be a good idea. The plan was to pack all the kit and take it for a test run to make sure we knew how everything works and make sure we had everything we need. Last year we went camping in Cornwall so we could have some time on our own and the kids (squids) can spend some time with there dad who lives down there. So we packed up what we had and went. We had a few issues once down there. One being our tent leaked along with other things like our airbed being way to small and not holding air. Anyway. This Easter weekend we are going back down the Cornwall to go camping and use all our kit. Now for those of you reading this ... read more

Glamping................. the act of going camping in glamor. Now to me this sounds good for several reasons. The first being that you have as many home comforts with me as possible and also means lots of kit, which I love. So we decided it would suit us nicely. The initial outlay may be slightly higher but the comfort level is good. Now some people say why not spend the money on going to B&Bs. Well here's my answer: Because I like camping and B&Bs are good and all... BUT.... now i have the kit i can use it time and time again. So we thought "what do we want to make camping nicer". We have a nice 2 burner and grill cooker already and this runs of a 4.5kg Calor Gas tank which doesn't seem to ... read more

Someday has to be the first, some day has to be the last. The third Friday was special. It’s always hard to say good bye. Especially if you know that you probably won’t see each other again. Even if you always go like “Let’s meet again”… you know how it often ends up. There’re new things waiting around the corner. Everything has its time. And place. Anyway, these three weeks have been terrific in all ways. A wonderful place, a friendly and personal atmosphere both in school and in the village, and a new experience for us to be at the same place for three weeks. Without a car. Just being on this little spot on the map all the time. As near you can come to actually live in a new place abroad, which always ... read more

Well, time to wrap it up here in Polruan. Nearly three weeks have passed. They went pretty quick, after all. Everything felt a bit slow in the start, as with everything that is new, but then time was speeding up… R from Chile/Stockholm invited us all to his beautiful cottage, with an extraordinary view over the estuary, as a little fare well party. We got to know his wife and children, and had a nice evening with drinks, snacks and lots of laughs. R and his family were leaving one day earlier than the rest of us, due to the rent period of his house. (The Norwegian guy with his family left us one week ago.) Tomorrow is the last day in school, and I have mixed feelings. I’m going to miss everyone here, and at ... read more

Of course we had to see the great “estuary” (a word as frequent as “quay” in this place) from a closer distant. Together with my schoolmates and K we hired Dan to take us around the harbour and up the river. We got to see the jetties where the china clay is loaded on big boats, and several others “point of interests”, according to Dan. For instance the place where Led Zeppelin recorded some of there greatest albums, among other artist. A recording studio in the middle of nowhere! Well, near the river, and just a couple of hundred yards from a pub, but otherwise as secluded as it can be. Certainly Dan also offered some jokes, trying to lighten us up. Like “This is the place where I got my first kiss”. It was last ... read more

Hi again! Just wanted to share a couple of pics with you, from our favourite walking path, facing the Atlantic. Maybe you geographically should call this sea The English Channel, even here at this most south western part of England. But it definitely feels more like an Ocean than a channel, so, The Atlantic Ocean it is! Enjoy!... read more

There is one world famous “must see” in Cornwall, at least for them who consider themselves to be climate conscious and environmental friendly, and you see a lot of those people in this place. I’m talking about “Eden Project”. A couple of huge bubbles (in fact we noticed them from above when we arrived with our flight to Newquay) with a lot of plants, representing different parts of the world and climate zones. With lots of educational signs to that, of course, addressing issues like a sustainable echo system etc. I know that you've been there K and P, haven't you? The bubbles are built on the bottom of a gaping sore in the nature, a pit from digging out china-clay for commercial reasons. There are lots of those pits in Cornwall. But the digging of ... read more

The Hall walk is considered one of the most beautiful walks in England. Of course we had to try it. Well, it would have been difficult not to, since everyone in school talked about it day after day… The path differ a lot from the coast path, since it goes along the banks of Fowey River and the Pont Pill Creek. Steep slopes and lots of oaks and hazel. In many places the undergrowth is heavy, and the hazel forms a tunnel to walk through, which shelter you from wind and rain. This day, though, was rather good with some sunshine now and then between scattered clouds. This walk includes Polruan as well as Fowey, and uses the car ferry and the passenger ferry to get you back where you started from. As always in this ... read more
