Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

This time next week, I'll be a couple of days into my trip from Nairobi down to Johannesburg via Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Botswana! Well, with less than a week to go, I think I have nearly everything sorted... Just waiting for my "self-inflating" sleep mat to arrive and a few clothes and I'm good to go... No idea if I'll manage to keep this updated over the five weeks, but I'll do my best! [View Full Entry]

The British Museum was amazing, especially since I was able to find the Anglo-Saxon section and photograph everything I possibly could. I was extremely geeking out during that time. I think the greatness of the exhibits can only be explained through the photographs I took (which will be uploaded at a later time). Most of the time I spent by myself in the museum so I could go at my own pace, but I did join up with Hillar, his wife, his son, Mike, and Tall Paul. We toured the upstairs first, and then once we worked our way downstairs we [View Full Entry]

Hello again everyone! It's been awhile since we've posted any new updates so we thought we'd drop in to let you all know that everything is going well! It's been a month now since we came back to England. For the first few weeks we saw nothing but rain, but this past week the weather has been gorgeous! We took advantage of the sunshine today and went outside to take some pictures by the canal at the end of the road. There were plenty of ducks and swans basking in the sun! Work has been going fairly well. There are only [View Full Entry]

Its that time of year again..time for a vacation, and where else but sunny old England. Contrary to popular belief England can actually have very nice weather and this past week has been no exception. 'not quite as hot as I'm used to but nonetheless sunny enough to warrant shorts for a large number of people I pass on the street. 4 legged puppy had to stay in Costa Rica for this trip and apparently is suffering from a small bout of depression but THe month will fly by I'm sure! Next week its off to Egypt so gearing up for [View Full Entry]
