So moving on from last week, I felt like I was really starting to settle in a bit more. Getting lost sortof helped me find out more about the area, and the place that I'm at is pretty close to the city centre, so I can walk around without getting too lost, as long as I can get back on to Karla Marksa, the Queen Streen of the area, if you will. I guess I should start off with the good news. After I did the English Speaking Club over the weekend, I mentioned to Marina that I was still trying to work out issues with my job, and that the director of the company was being quite bleh. So the next day, I ran into her at a restaurant, and she found out that I ... read more

I know that I haven't blogged in a long time, and there were a few reasons for it. Firstly, I wanted to wait for my camera to be fixed, so that I could add photos, but I haven't been very proactive with that. I think I should just get a new one, and it will be easier. Secondly, I was waiting for my issues with my accomodation and job to get sorted out, so that I would be more settled in. But the last week has been quite exciting and action packed, so I figured I could just talk about that for now, rather than have a massive entry later. So when I left you off last week, I was still living with Olsa, and was waiting for a language centre to accept me, after many ... read more

I think that as time goes by, the frequency of my blogs will decrease steadily. Hopefully I can still continue to post photographs though. Sadly there will be a lack of photos for a while, since my camera broke already.. but hopefully I can fix it or get a new one for cheap.. So I finally arrived in Dnipropetrovsk at 7am, by train. There I was pleased to see a smiling reception waiting for me, of Era, Ola and Ola (will try to get photos soon). I soon discovered that names are a bit confusing.. There's the Russian name, the English variation of that name, and then the English name too sometimes. So my 'buddy' assigned to me is Olya (i think), but she says I should call her Ola, or Helen. She explained how it ... read more

Zaporozhe, heart of the Cossacks If you want to fall in love with Zaporozhye take a long stroll in the early morning while the City is still drowsy with the previous night’s sleep. There is much to see and do at Zaporozhye, but it is a subtle place: you have to look harder. flash earth coordinates: 47 51’ 4.4”north by 35 6’ 59.8”east, focused on a park on prospekt lenina Getting there: the usual suspects apply: train, bus, plane. I came here from Kharkov on a very nice coach, but unless you’re coming from kiev apparently the older, less pleasant buses are the norm, so you’re forewarned. The train is still my favorite option-- the #71 & #72 trains to and from kiev take about 8.25 hours-- but commuter plane service does connect with zhulyani in ... read more

October 15th - Trip, arrival and homecoming Down to the station on the double and onto the morning express to DP. Apparently the Ukrainian version of an express train is simply one which runs during the day with really uncomfortable seats, because it doesn't seem any faster or slower than the usual night trains. I have rather a lot of difficulty with my seat, its not written obviously on my ticket and my understanding of Russian isn't great. I asked the original doorman by making a seat with my hands, and he told me what I thought meant 15. Turns out it was 55, and I was confronted about 2 hours into my journey by a man who woke me up to kick me out of my seat. Eventually, we found a new one. One row ... read more
