It was an early wake up for Ray and I today, as w were planning on taking the first train to Jungfrau, also known as The Top of Europe. The train takes you to the Jungfraujoch, site of the highest rail station in Europe. As he cog grinds steeply up the wooded mountain side, you are treated with spectacular views of the valleys and villages below, and the towering mountain tops. The train stops briefly for passengers to take in the icy views, through windows cut in the mountain. It continues upward until you reach the Jungfraujoch terminus At 11,333 ft. After exiting the train, we took a high speed elevator up another 364 ft to the Sphinx terrace. From there the Eiger, Aletsch glacier, and Monch seemed almost close enough to touch. I'm not sure ... read more

Am Freitag habe ich meine 4. Arbeitswoche in Bern und damit gleichzeitig den 1. Monat erfolgreich beendet. Das einzige was mich noch interessiert hätte, ... read more

Change of country today. So its auf Wiedersehen to lovely Austria and Gruß Gott to Switzerland. A very scenic route was planned for today’s drive and incredibly scenic it was indeed. No motorways though our road followed the motorway for much of the way. Due West from Innsbruck along some pretty roads, mountains either side but we were following the river valley so the road was pretty straight and flat. There were lots of motorbikes on the road with us as well as plenty of cyclists but no trucks. Assume trucks are banned from the roads on Sunday as in France. At Landeck we started to climb, and climb again as we were going over the famous Arlberg Pass. Using the main, original road, not through the very long tunnel. A brilliant drive indeed with some ... read more

Well, once again, I've fallen behind! After leaving Colmar we headed to Bavaria in Germany. We just couldn't believe the story book perfection of the countryside! Unfortunately, there were no opportunities to pull over and take photos as we were on two lane roads. We spent 2 nights in Fussen. We spent our only full day there touring Neufwenstein and Hohenschwangau, the homes of King Ludwig II. Neufwenstein was the model for the Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland and was absolutely stunning! We enjoyed both, but were overwhelmed by the magnificence of NW. We celebrated our 34th anniversary at Il Pescatore and had the best meal yet of the trip! Both had tortellacci stuffed with mushrooms and lightly sauced with fresh cepes and shrimp. All washed down with a lovely Arneis and incredible bread alongside. Left ... read more

We arrive by car to Lugano, on our way we drive through one of the longest tunnels in the world. We are so impressed with the engineering that went into building this tunnel. Lots of moutains and waterfalls on the drive here. Lugano is a Italian speaking area. So we now say ciao (hello) and grazie (thank you). This area not only speaks Italian the architecture is more Italian than traditional Swiss architecture and the people look Italian. Lugano is located on Lake Lugano, Italy is only a stones throw away. We have rented an Airbnb two blocks from the lake. There is a heat wave going on and it is 95 when we arrive. The first thing we do when we arrive in a new city is grocery shop. Switzerland is the most expensive country ... read more

Mummy loves hiking, and one of the places that she loved hiking in most was the Lauterbrunnen valley and Gimmelwald area, that is why we are exploring this area over the next few days. Tomorrow we will take a bus from Lauterbrunnen to Steklberg, and then do a 3 hour hike up to Gimmelwald, carrying all that we need for 3 days within my walking backpack and daddy's big backpack. Apparently, the scenery is truly spectacular (& maybe a little too perfect), so I am excited. The drive from Brienz wasn't too long or draining, and when we got to the hotel, I had a cot to myself, which was quite fun. Mummy and daddy spent a lot of time packing, and then suddenly settled. Mummy and daddy had pizza for dinner, whilst I made a ... read more

D I ordered my baguettes and croissants yesterday and picked them up this morning. It had been another cold night. England is fairing no better as bad weather is predicted over the next few days. April should be April Showers and warmish weather. Occaisionally the weather turns as it did in 1979 and we get snow. When I mentioned the cold weather to the young lady who served me she smiled and said something that seemed odd at first. “ We like the cold weather “ “Do you?” said I wondering why. As we get older we prefer a more clement weather. I expected her to tell me they needed cold for a certain crop to perform well. Instead she smiled and told me that because of the cold you need more blankets. I looked rather ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-East » Davos January 1st 2017

New year's day, so I decided to go on a winter hike. This year just like last year there is no snow in the mountains. So in the end after looking at many webcams Davos seemed like the best option. It is not one of my favourite places, too famous for its own good. But at least there are webcams to show state of snow and being a popular destination during holidays, more trails are built up here. The train to Davos Platz costs about 30 CHF (with half-tax) and it is a 2 hr 35min trip with a longish 15min stop at Landquart. In the Ziegelbrucke valley there was snow on the ground and none on the tree tops and mountains, it was an interesting phenomenon, probably caused by the fact that this valley does ... read more

Dali jsme si výborný svařák a čokoládu a mega klobásu.
