Day 87, 20.06.19. Thursday. A few days ago the small shopping-mall at Långflon got visited by a man that was stealing and scaring the employees at the restaurant, and probably other shops as well. I noticed him at the restaurant the first day he arrived, because he was drinking beer that the restaurant didn't have to sell. After he left the girls at the restaurant came over and asked me if I could help them out with that guy if he came back. I asked why, so they told me he'd been stealing food and as he was confronted with it he confirmed that he hadn't paid for it, sat down and started eating. Some time later he was told to pay for a coffee, and as he was looking for some money he pulled out ... read more

Here we are in Gothenburg. Such a delight to meet the new granddaughter and catch up with the 3 year old grandson too. It’s only our first few days here and already we have been walking, swimming, meeting up with the extended family over delicious dinners - and of course we had to visit the tap room at Beerbliotek. Getting around Gothenburg is easy once you get the hang of traveling by tram, bus or boat. Buy a tram card, top up with SEK (Swedish Kronor), download the Reseplanerare app (Vastraffik) and plan each step of your journey. It even estimates the time needed to walk to the tram or bus stop. Senior Tip: If you walk slower than our speedy (fit ) Swedish family members, allow yourself more time for the walking part! In Gothenburg ... read more

June 23 we flew from Venice to Gothenburg via Brussels, and were met by Wayne's second cousin, Anders, about noon. He drove us the approximately two hours to Stromstad, a pretty seaside town on the west coast. Along the way we stopped by a roadside cafe for some Swedish fast food: a smoked salmon plate and a shrimp salad. If you don't like seafood, you may be unhappy in Sweden, because it turned out that we ate shrimp and lox at every meal with Anders's family. We enjoyed it, especially one "torta" (cake) made with a dark bread crust topped with shrimp, egg, and salmon in a cream cheese sauce. Anyhow, back in Stromstad we met Anders's wife, Monika, and two children, ages 7 and 4. We all got into their small outboard boat for the ... read more

... read more

Got just a few hours sleep despite earplugs - it was as if they raised the volume even compared to Monday night. So instead of lying in bed tossing and turning and getting more and more pissed off, I wrote an email to the hotel explaining that I hadn't slept properly both nights and expected compensation. And when I went down to talk to them in reception in the morning, I discovered they had decided not to charge me for both nights. As one friend put it: vindication. And a nice chunk of money to put towards the rest of my travels. Tired but satisfied. It was clear that I wasn't going hiking, but what to do with my final day in the Lidköping area? I opted to take it easy in town, first trying to ... read more

After a dodgy night's sleep to say the least and a breakfast made up of a mishmash of hotel fare and my own additions (there was no soya milk despite my request), I dragged myself off to the train to Kinnekulle. At the crowded Pressbyrå newsagents, I bought a travelcard for my adventures. The train was pristine and the helpful onboard staff helped me work out the card validation system. I got off at the tiny station at Råbäck, and after ambling by mistake into a private garden and being ticked off by the owner (in my defence, there was no sign about private property and she did live in the former station building), I found my way onto one of the many hiking trails. My destination was the lookout tower at the top of the ... read more

Speeding along through the countryside of northern Skåne towards Gothenburg and ultimately Lidköping. My aim for the summer - and the future - is to fly as little as possible. So I'm back on the rails, or back on track, or whichever cheesy train-based metaphor you wish to use. I love trains and train travel but after several years of failed journeys between Stockholm and Malmö (and by failed I mean seriously lengthy delays), I'd kind of given up on the choo-choo. But I'm finding my excessive flying habit increasingly hard to justify, so I will be weaning myself off it. I only really travel within Europe anyhow and the job I have makes not flying a real possibility. So this is my challenge to myself, to get creative and find alternatives. I have one flight ... read more

Arrived in Lidköping after a pleasant train trip across the Västra Götaland plains - and it's eyewateringly windy. Found Stadshotell quickly and was confronted by various disclaimers in reception. Not really the service I was hoping for. Apparently they've been trying to reach me by phone "all week" (I booked on Thurs, it's now Mon) to let me know that their nightclub will be open Mon and Tues and thus to expect late-night noise. But they didn't seem to be capable of leaving a message on my voicemail or putting the info on their booking page. I mean, it's either habitable or uninhabitable, not something in between that requires calling each guest personally to give them a chance to back out of their booking. Sigh. I never leave home without earplugs so I guess I'll survive. ... read more
