Day 3-4: Gothenburg Jetlag descends upon me like a gray clouded monster to envelope me, like the oncoming of storm clouds descending on a town ready to make hell. Jetlag is hellish. I thought I had kicked jetlagg’s butt to the curb, not having drank any alcoholic drink and sleeping on the plane, making sure to stay awake the whole day once I got to Stockholm and the next day following Stockholm’s schedule and eating times, and falling asleep at a reasonably time, 22:00 and getting up around 8am the second day. The morning sun rays spread into the empty hardwood floor room, climb onto bed, crawls underneath my sleeping mask and pry my eyes open. The sound of tires hitting wet concrete indicate to me that it is still raining, harking back to my dreadful ... read more

Untitled Before we parted Marylee did inspire me to travel north above the arctic circle so on Sunday I went to Ostersand to take the scenic train, Inlandsbanan, up to Gallevare. I stayed in Ostersand for three nights, the first at a bed & breakfest where I met a member of the Swedish parliament. He was an AFS exchange to San Deigo 1991 and we talked politics for three hours, I was thinking he was an interesting fellow till he told me he would have voted for George Bush. One thing that Sweden is famous for is taking a number when you enter an office and wait your turn till your number is called. At times it is very helpful like at the tourist office when they are helping hundreds of people each day and makes ... read more

15:10 pm Our journey to Svalbard has been delayed by 8 days. Lars had alot of jobs that were delayed and needed to be done e.g taking the boat out of the water to paint the bottom plus sjöverket needed to measure the boat, something to do with a certificate of registation. Anyway we finally got under way but only to Marstrand. Winds were blowing around 16 m/s and in the wrong direction. Valentine Stone, brother to Clive Stone, who we met in the Caribian with Pam, Clive's wife (Nicky Tam II), has been with us since 3rd May. He has been taking it wasy at our home. getting into the time deifference. He's been in Australia, India (where he lives) and now Sweden. Val will be 70 in July. Up until fairly recently, I thought I was pretty much the only one who suffered from what we in plain Swedish call "resfeber" or, literally translated, "travel fever". When you're just sitting at home, flipping through books and magazines, travelling sounds like the most wonderful thing in the world. So you book your trip, you start planning, looking forward to it. Then it hits you. You're really going. It could be wonderful, but oh dear God are there a billion things that could go wrong... And the worrying, nervousness and anxiety begins. Just recently I read an opinion piece in a Swedish travel magazine about this very phenomenon, and it made me realise this does, in fact, happen to other people - even to seasoned travellers. The piece suggested the reasons for feeling like this could ... read more

Hi! We are finally getting some photos from Europe on the blog! Helsinki, Finland August 30th--Our flight left Thailand at 12:30am and 10 1/2 hours later we arrived in Helsinki @ 6:330am. It was COLD!!! We had to change into our warmest clothes (which still were not very warm), then bussed into the city to explore. Fall was already here with all the leaves beginning to change colors. The city was smaller than we expected so we walked everywhere, and the mix of old buildings with modern ones along with some cobblestone streets made it quite charming. And we were definitely ready to be back in Western culture. (though we stuck out like sore thumbs in our Icebreaker wool jerseys, quick-dry pants, and hiking shoes :) A good day of sight-seeing, then back to the airport ... read more

Yes this is my last blog from Sweden. Tomorrow at yet another obscenely indecent hour (3am) I get up to rush off to the airport to catch my long awaited flight to Athens. I will never ever moan about having to get up at half 5am to catch the 7am flight out of Dunners........ Anyway, today Jeff and I went into town and walked around a part of the waterfront area. We then hopped on a ferry and zipped (and I mean zipped, shit those boats don't hang around) across to the other side of the river to take a nosy at how the rich Gothenburgians live. The area is reclaimed dock land and has been done up with very very swanky and ridiculously expensive (according to Jeff) apartments. We wandered along for a good hour ... read more
