Hi! Watching the Melodifestival at Ljungby Motel in Småland. Having a lot of champagne, it's quite nice! But as you know, champagne has to be really cold, and now our AC/DC has to show how good it is. Pretty nice so far! Looking forward to eventually hear af Ugglas, loved by for example Eva-Karin and as much hated by family B in S-näs. Have a good evening! /J&K... read more

Hej hej! Jag heter Emily och jag kommer fran Minnesota! I have been learning a little Swedish lately (it says My name is Emily and I am from Minnesota). Since my last post, I turned 21 and saw some new things. A few days before my birthday, I celebrated Halloween with friends. Halloween is popular in Sweden like it is in the US, but less people go trick or treating. I dressed as a pirate with the hook and eye patch I found at Toys R Us. The next day, me and lots of exchange students took a bus to Stockholm where we boarded the MS Romantika, a giant cruise ship. The ship was beautiful!!! There were three dance floors, two restaurants, a sauna, whirlpool, and much more. We ate dinner at the taco buffet where ... read more

Greetings from Sweden! Last weekend I met Kai in Amsterdam for three nights and we had a blast! I left Vaxjo at 9:30am Thursday morning, catching the bus to the train station. I caught a train to Copenhagen which took 2 1/2 hours. It was really foggy that morning but luckily the fog lifted by the time I flew out. I got a window seat on a "City-Hopper", its a plane seating 50 people that fly short distances in Europe. The view from the plane was amazing as we left Copenhagen. I saw the long bridge that connects Malmo, Sweden to Copenhagen, Denmark and discovered that it disappears under water for a few kilometers. I also saw two sets of wind turbines in the water. The first is in a row of about ten and the ... read more

Today was my first day of school at Vaxjo Universitet and I really liked it. At 1pm I left my corridor and walked about 10 minutes to my classroom. It was next to the room I had orientation in so I had no trouble finding it. When I got there the professor told me to come back at 3 because the first two hours were for Swedish students only. So I went back to my room and wrote down the books I needed to buy for class. I bought 3 books and a planner at the campus book store and then sat in the cafe and wrote in my journal and started reading. I was tempted to buy a latte but it would have cost me over $4 so I passed. Class only lasted a half ... read more

The 15 hour adventure to Sweden went very well! Eric, Amy, and I got to see Duluth from the plane and I also got to see some Northern Lights over Greenland, it was beautiful! When we got to the train station, a student from the school picked us up and brought us to the International Office. At that point, we received our itinerary for orientation this weekend and keys to our new home. I live on campus in the Lyan building. I have my own bedroom and bathroom and a big closet, it's really nice! Unfortunately, I will be paying double for rent compared to last school year, but it is a really great place to be and I am thankful for this opportunity! I share a kitchen and living room with 6 other students, but ... read more

This afternoon we'll be en route to Ljungby....a mixture of emotions as we leave our first families and move on to the next. What could possibly beat this?! But before all that...........................we have our first presentation today! This morning we're off to the emigration institute and the cathedral. We have an hour to buff up our 20 minutes of Canadian-American genius, and at noon we'll try it out in front of about 50 Rotarians! I think I speak for all of us when I say we're looking forward to getting this first one taken care of! After that, it's free time in Växjö and a road trip! Ljungby, here we come!... read more

Today we had our first vocational day! I biked into the office with my host, Bjorn, where we toured his office and then went on to the local District Court a few blocks away. The experience was quite enlightening, and the comparison between our two systems yielded few, if any, similarities! I could go on, but suffice it to say, their judges don't wear robes!! I am eager to hear about the other team members' experiences! I attach more photos... Thanks for checking in on us. I'll get more pictures from the team members soon! Vi ses.... read more

The team had a wonderful first full day in Sweden! We started with a tour of a papermill, then went on to lunch and Kosta Boda to the glass factory! I never realized how fascinating glass blowing is! After some wise purchases, we went on to the moose park where we saw four moose lazing about. Shana and I capped it off with a thrilling run around a local lake, Vaxjosjön... We're on to our vocational visits today and a lovely dinner in the countryside at a historic estate once occupied by kings! Vi ses! ... read more

We made it! A bit drowsy, but smiley and appreciative all the same! The gracious welcome was beyond words by the GSE committee, complete with large Rotary flag and a cavalcade of vehicles!! It's gorgeous here in Växjö (with sunburns to prove it)...even though we still can't quite figure how to pronounce it! Our flights went smoothly and were on time. We all look forward to a good night's rest, so we can proceed full steam ahead to tomorrow's adventures...the Kingdom of Crystal, a mill tour in Lessebo, a guided tour of a glass factory and a moose park!!!! Photos coming soon! ... read more
