We have probably said this before but sometimes the best finds we have made for sightseeing in Spain have been the lesser advertised places and so it turned out for our visit to nearby Sagunto. It was as quiet as we thought it might be in our isolated and unoccupied neighbourhood and we managed to over sleep again. Not that we are planning to go far today. We decided to contact our hosts, who live in the township of Pucol, if we hadn’t heard from them by midday regarding the internet availability as we are already having withdrawal symptoms and we have only being without contact to the outside world for 12 hours! After breakfast we took a stroll down to the beach and a walk along the promenade. All is ready for the summer influx ... read more

Adrenaline addiction has yet to have a global advertising campaign against it. In fact quite the opposite; ski resorts, adventure sport companies, even energy drink and high octane breakfast cereals have glorified this serious disease into something to be craved and desired. Maybe something clicked while accompanying Dennie off a mountain in Switzerland, or watching her volunteer to be the first one to jump down a waterfall in the Pyrenees, but each time we would do anything the least bit dangerous or thrilling, I would notice a distinct and immediate change in Dennie. Loved all of it, even the train ride out because we got to see some of the Spanish countryside and the train ran along the beach so that was amazing as well. A little background on Sagunto: The resident's of Sagunto are said to be Spain's most courageous. This reputation dates back to the 3rd century BC, whent he citizens of the Phoenician-controlled Saguntum held out during an eight-month siege by Hannibal's Carthaginians. Some sources say that on the brink of annihilation, Sagunto's women, children, and elderly threw themselves into a made furnace, while others insist that they chose starvation over defeat. Perhaps because of their 2000 ... read more

The Program planned an optional daytrip to Sagunto, a small town to the North of Valencia City (where I am), but still part of the area of Spain known as Valencia. We rode in a couple of chartered busses and I was in the top half of my first double-decker bus (covered, not open, though). The ride was short, only about 20 minutes, and took us right by the coast, offering me another first in my life -- a glimpse at the Mediterranean. It looked so pristine and gorgeous. I can't wait until the weather is nice enough on a free day so I can walk there and dip my feet in the water and maybe even splash around a bit. The town of Sagunto itself is very European, with tiny little streets, some of them ... read more
