We left again at about 6:30am, and quickly left town and entered Ayegui. At the entrance to the town they had a sign saying 100 kilometers. Hmm, I'm pretty sure its been more than 100. The towns are basically right next to each other. In 2015, we passed through Estella accidentally and stopped at the municipal albergue of Ayegui. Just like in 2015, the store on the corner where you turn to go uphill to the monastery was the only thing open. I don't remember then that they had coffee and a seating area, but now they did, so we quickly took advantage of it. Afterwards, we walked uphill to the famous Irache Monastery, stopping briefly at an iron workers shop. We then continued uphill to the wine fountain, where you can get a free sip ... read more

To avoid the afternoon heat, we were packed up and on our way by 6:30am. Since the hotel was at the entrance to town, we had to walk through town to get on the trail. Although it was early, we kept an eye open and spotted a tavern that was open, so we could have a cup of coffee. We finally left Puente La Reina, crossing the old bridge, and posing for a few shots. After about an hour and a half we entered Maneru. We decided to stop for another coffee at the Albergue El Canero. About an hour later we entered Cirauqui, where the Camino passes through an archway of an old building. They provide a stamp, so we got one. I haven't mention this before, but every albergue, most bar and restaurants, and ... read more

Today the impact of the 28°c heat was softened by a cool breeze that accompanied me all the way to Estella. It was a varied walk, combining steep hills, lovely villages, long slightly undulating paths and good company. I walked alone most of the time which I enjoyed immensely. I’m back to a good pace and catch up with known accomplices along the Way. It’s a good mix of time to think and time to chat. I spoke to two South African women at a pharmacy today and they were over it. Not quitting, but certainly never recommending the Camino as a good thing to do. I think that approach will change and they are still hurting from the first 2 days. They were there for blister patches, I was there for Cortisone cream. You can ... read more

We were ready by 6am for our walk to Los Arcos and walked out of the sleeping town of Estella towards the Monestario de Irache, where there is wine for free on tap at a decorative barrel on the wall. On learning that the hole in the wall was empty we ventured into the dark towards Los Arcos and about 400 meters from the monastery, Arena asked me where were my sticks. Great! I ran the distance back by torch light and recovered the sticks and recommenced the walk. In the dark we somehow missed a turn and ended up off course. This deviation added about 2 kilometres to the day so it was OK. The climb to Luquín was quite steep as this was the alternative route over the mountain, rather than around it to ... read more

Today we started a little later at about 7.15. Wearing sandels, I am enjoying more freedom in my feet than yesterday and may continue in them tomorrow . We ate breakfast at the alburgue and it was yoghurt , toast with jam and coffee; pretty good. Today we walked with a Japanese language teacher, Masa and Irena, a self described 'crazy Croation' . However, she is really quite nice. Masa has become our ninja and John is his intern ninja. While Masa bestows us with insightful wisdom, the best Irana had to offer was ' never stay at the Jesus and Mary Alburgue at Pamplona and never accept advice from an elderly English couple who have done the Camino 7 times. The last bit of advice relates directly to the alburgue advice. The walk out of ... read more

It has been a long day. My muscles are feeling the love. I don't care how much training you give, it is difficult for your body to adjust to the multiple days of just walking on all kinds of difficult terrain. It is only day 6. Can't even imagine the love in 10 more days much less 30+ total. Today probably was the toughest with the heat. We were very lucky with lower temperature prory days. The best today was walking through the pepper, olive , grape fields. Etc. hope all is well with those back home. ... read more

29 August 2015, Saturday. Stage 6 GPS: 11.78 miles, 4.36 hours moving and 7 hours total time for day. Fitbit: 14.12 miles, 32,317 steps and 125 stairs. Another warm day. We leave Hospederia Chapitel early after our breakfast and are off in the cool of the morning. The day looked ominous with a 250 meter climb. From the hotel, we walk past the church through town and on up into the countryside. We skirt the mountain instead of going over the top to save another 100 meters of climbing. Shortly after leaving Estelle we pass an old monastery which is no longer in use. But across the path is the Bodegas Irache with its famous wine and water fountain. We get in the line of pilgrims for a sip of wine (it is really much to ... read more

28 August 2015, Friday Stage 5 15.36 miles, Left at 0811 and arrived at 1630 after 8 hours 20 minutes. 6 hours of underway time. A warm day. An understatement! Friday, August 28. Estella - GPS said 18 miles but went nuts when we stopped for lunch and I recharged watch. Fitbit: Steps : 35168, Stairs: 133, Miles: 15.36 It is more than 1.25 miles from our hotel to the bridge, so last night our walk through Puente de la Reina covered more than 2.5 miles beyond the day's walk. But the photos we took of the old bridge, in the late afternoon early evening light, we are happy to have. We all have those days in our lives--the ones that you ask a person where they were on that particular date. On the camino one ... read more

Had breakfast at the hostel, bread and jam, juice and coffee and were out the by 7.30am. The first 3.5 kms were a very steep climb out of the village, up towards Maneru. The path was refreshingly good and the scent of spruce forests pervaded the air and made the walk more pleasant. After Maneru, Cirauqui was next in our sights and after a nice undulating walk, the village appeared ahead. It is a lovely medieval town with narrow streets that had us weaving our way through until we hit the open country and the old roman road ahead. I would like to say strolling along the roman road and crossing the old roman bridge ( are there any new ones?) was a pleasant , almost romantic, step back in time, but that would be a ... read more
