Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Ola, I arrived in Tarragona around 830 or so, and not much was open yet. The city was founded in 217 BC by the Romans, and it was one of the most significant Roman cities in Spain. I wandered over to the Forum and took some photos before heading along the waterfront to the well-preserved Amphitheatre. I enjoyed wandering around the site because there was no one there and I had it all to myself. I then walked past some of the Roman walls and up into the tower that used to be part of the Hippodrome where races were held. [View Full Entry]

I know, I know ... what the heck am I doing in Spain? Three weeks ago my Dad managed to call me (it is possible!) and informed that I'd be meeting him in Barcelona on the 16th. Why Barcelona? The Catalonian capital was chosen to host the 33rd World Convention of Narcotics Anonymous (WCNA). So here we are, along with about 5000-7000 NA fellows. So this week, thousands of recovering addicts from across the globe flooded the streets of Barcelona. While a majority of the group came from the United States, where NA began, every continent is represented [View Full Entry]

Ola, The next morning, Steffen and I got up early and the hostel for the station. He was taking the bus up to the Pyrenees, and I was taking the train to Barcelona. I got off the train at Sants, the main train station, and I decided to walk to my hostel which did not seem like it was that far a walk. It only took me half an hour, but it was 32 degrees and humid so I was dripping by the time I got to me hostel. It was a massive hostel, with over 400 beds, but it was [View Full Entry]

Gaudi's Lizard

One great thing about Barcelona is that you can walk around randomly and every 5 to 10 minutes you’ll just happen across an interesting-looking building (the ‘normal’ buildings are also quite nice). The most famous of these buildings were designed by the modernist architect Antoni Gaudi and of them his masterwork is the yet-unfinished cathedral La Sagrada Familia. Earlier in my trip I saw both Notre Dame cathedral in Paris and Il Duomo in Firenze, both of which are very large, intricately-detailed places of worship that took over a century to complete. One of the thoughts [View Full Entry]

...ummm, did I do it wrong? Honestly, I don´t think Barcelona is the most enchanting place I´ve ever seen. People always say that Barcelona is one of their favorite cities, or one of the best tourist destinations. The movies make it seem a city of romance, like Paris. We spent 3 days there and I think that was about enough. Hey, I like Barcelona, but I'm just not enamored! I don´t feel the need to return pronto. We had a great time in Barcelona: Juan (cousin), Marta, and I. It was better with 3 of us. We each brought a backpack, [View Full Entry]

It is a funny thing. I never really had Spain on my list. But once there, Barcelona intrigued me. From the winding alleys of the gothic quarter to the hip new area at the old Barcelona wharf, the summertime holiday vibe is contagious. I arrived in Barcelona at the end of their summer. The days were 30oC min and humid. I dumped my bags and headed out straight away in a cab. Las Rambla, Barcelona’s “main” street is lined with wrought iron clad balconies, ornate lamp poles and potted flowering plants dangling from 4 and 5 storey vintage apartments. The street [View Full Entry]

Beachside! Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona
So this last weekend I headed out for Barcelona and the BEACH! I never used the beach at home, but I have taken it for GRANTED. I missed it so much, it was nice just to lay out and tan and jump in the water when it got too hot. Lovely :). Side note: I also visited the Prado last week. What an awesome museum! It was so huge (i got lost...) and just so much to see, I loved it!. So I got to Barcelona Friday night at like 11. Basically i just went to my hotel and relaxed before [View Full Entry]

Barcelona Day 1 Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona
I was mercifully allowed to sleep in today :) We set out around 9:30 on an on and off bus tour of Barcelona. We saw a lot of neat architecture, including the gothic area, as well as some of Gaudi´s work. Interesting artist, that Gaudi! Check out the pics to see what I mean! It was near 30 degrees today, and very sunny, which was a nice change from the last two days spent in London. I got to wear a skirt and tank top all day - even in the evening! I was glad when we decided to stop touring [View Full Entry]
