Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

i Hola !

Barcelona! Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona
Unfortunately, Iīm leaving Barcelona in a few hours; I donīt really want to because itīs been so much fun! I donīt have tons of time, so here are some highlights of the first stop of my Europe trip: Festival de La Merce- Human castles with people stacking on top of one another 10 people high! This morning there was a pyramid with lots of people on their hands and knees (though they also stood atop each others shoulders at other times) and then a little 5 year old kid climbs and stands on top! Last night I went to the fire [View Full Entry]

Ablo Espaniol? Nope! Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona
Back to London - After forcing ourselves to leave the little surf town, we headed back to London for a few days. We ended up catching the Thames River Festival - a huge event with artisan booths, food from around the world, and performers. I finally got to go on the London Eye too! Kurt, our new Canadian friend, agreed to go on it with me (so I wouldn't be 'that girl' riding alone) and he even managed to find the one little tim hortons store in all of Europe and brought Laur and I Timmies Coffees! Madrid, Spain - We [View Full Entry]

We got up and it was a beautiful day, the sun was out and blue skies as far as the eye could see. We ate our complementary breakfast in the hotel then headed to the beach. After a couple hours of basking in the sun and watching Brian, Malena, & Lautauro swim in the cove, we had to head back to the hotel check out of the hotel. Now we could see some clouds in the distance making their way in. This made Diego feel better about having to leave this beautiful beach town to head back home! We packed all [View Full Entry]

We decided to take it easy today. We leisurely woke up and putzed around the house before heading to into town. We followed Jenn through the maze of Valldoreix into Sant Cugat, we couldn’t travel in the same car because we had 3 adults and 3 car seats to deal with! Neither of our cars could fit all those people! We walked along one of Sant Cugat’s main shopping streets. There were many toy stores, café’s, and other clothing stores. My mission was to find Jake some cute toys that we couldn’t get at home. We went to one of Jenn’s [View Full Entry]

We got up while Jenn was taking Malena to school…also because Jake woke me up to eat! It was time to shuffle the contents of our luggage to make sure none of the bags are overweight and find places for our newly acquired treasures! Since our flight is bright and early tomorrow morning, leaving at 7:15am, we wanted to stay close to the airport, so we booked a hotel for our final evening in Barcelona. Jenn printed us directions to our hotel and we were able to navigate our way there without getting lost! We headed back into Barcelona for our [View Full Entry]

Blog entry dated 18th September Luscious Lillie here, we are in a strange part of the world, for those that were in India last year it has that same end of the world feeling. As if everyone knows something you are unaware of and have taken refuge from ‘It’. We are about as far south as you can go in France around Perpignan, at the edge of the Roussillion region, which is basically a salt water marsh lying just behind the beach. It forms ‘Etanges’ which are brackish lakes behind the coastal dunes, and are often below sea level, it has [View Full Entry]

This hotel computer is not the easiest to use but I will attempt to blog a little about my trip so far. The flight out here wasnīt too horrible. I actually succeded in getting in an hour nap on each flight which is a huge improvement from my last trip. I took some dramamine before each flight which helped with my motion sickness and making me drowsy so i could get some sleep but i think it might have contributed to my jet lag. We arrvied in Barcelona around 8 in the morning. Took a cab to our beautiful hotel and [View Full Entry]

Mediterranean ramble Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona
Museum fail, beautiful Mediterranean Sea win My plan for the day was to see the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), but I should have done my homework; it is closed Sunday. So sad! I decided to go see the beach and wander the Barceloneta and Barri Gotic areas instead. Definitly a high point of the trip. The palm trees, and gorgeous colors of the neighborhoods. The melding of Jewish, Hindu, Muslim and Catholic people all in their finery and standing around in the plazas chatting with the children running about playing and laughing. It made me very happy to be [View Full Entry]
