Well as most of the CELTYL lot took their flights home or moved on to travelling elsewhere Francesca and I found ourselves the only two left in Barcelona. We'd made plans to visit the monastery at Monserrat today so I was up early making a packed lunch and heading off to meet Francesca by the metro stop. We reached Placa d'Espanya where we could supposedly get a train to the monastery. We found the trip was made very simple for us by the tourist stands offering an inclusive ticket for the train and cable car. We were handed our tickets, timetable and map and then wandered around the placa and sat in the sun until it was time to catch our train. We took the train so far then took the vernacular railway instead of the ... read more

Unfortunately, my camera died before we toured the monastery - I'll steal some of my friends' pics soon so you guys can all check it out, it was really amazing. In the mean time, hope you like landscapes and pictures of rocks. The pictures really don't do it justice. The mountain is a 45 minute train ride from Barcelona, and from the top we could easily see the whole city and the coastline. I have a 360 movie I'll post up soon as well. Disfrute! (Enjoy!)... read more

Here are some GORGEOUS pictures from Montserrat. They don't even do it justice, but look anyway. Side note: I started classes this week and my head is pounding. Taking grammar classes in spanish is MUCH, and I mean, MUCCHHHHH different than taking regular classes in spanish. For six hours straight I am translating as fast as my brain allows, which is not very fast..... at this rate, I'm hoping for Cs in each course. (which by the way of average... having an A or 10 is considered publishable work. unreal, right?, a 9 is way up there as well, and 8 and 7 are considered above average with a 6 being good, really good. So I figure I'll go for a 5... good, just good.) I'm starting to meet more people though and have been doing ... read more

Buenos Dias! We are in Spain! Barcelona to be more precise. We woke up this morning as the ship was pulling into the docks in Barcelona. And although the city is known for its architecture, food, history and food (did I already mention that?) - we decided that once again we would venture down our own path and leave the city. Gasp! We hopped on a bus (more on the incredible rudeness of Europeans later), then a metro, then a train, then a tram (cremallera) and finally arrived at our destination - Montserrat! Montserrat is about an hour northwest of Barcelona in the Catalonian mountains. It is still used today as a Benedictine monk retreat. We took the funicular up to the Sant Joan church which is high on the other side of the mountain. Such ... read more

Hola, Time has been flying by. Yesterday I was sitting at a cafe with a few other people and I could have sworn it was Wed. But finally they convinced me it was Thursday and I could hardly believe it. My arm stopped cramping...yeah!!! Everything has been going well. Yesterday we went to the Cathedral of Montserrat and they had a really awesome art muesum. They had paintings from 9th century and up. It was really neat to see all the different paintings, many whom I have heard of. Today was a free day and we went to the Picasso art muesum. We also went to a flamingo show and it was so fun. Manana we leave for Madrid by train and get in early afternoon. We cannot take pictures at the muesem's (sorry) so ... read more

We made it to Barcelona eventually after an epic time in Amsterdam Airport. A short stay not a good stay at the airport thanks to Leon still being drunk from the night before and almost missing the flight. The hostel was great, free breakie AND dinner! Bonus. So of course we headed down for some dinner with the plan to just get some rest after. During dinner we talked to Rebecca and Ariel - some American guests at the hostel, who convinced us (twist the rubber arm) that sleep is overrated and to come out on a pub crawl. Before I knew it I was participating in a frantic ritual of 1hour all you can drink. We hit the first bar and I was nominated to represent NZ for a pint skull. 5seconds later, see ... read more
