September 30,2015 I am 2 days late on this one as the Internet has been spotty. Valtuille was a great little town where we had the house to ourselves, cooked a home meal and sat by the fireplace. The walk to Herrerias was different. On the one side we had a road and some traffic and on the other was a river with its peaceful sounds and birds. Some how we missed our intended path up the hills to a sun filled hill top which was reported to be delightful. Oh well! Missed one path and on another. This path changed about half way to a country road with fallen chestnuts and walnuts. This is a pilgrims meal for sure. We landed in this little town Herrerias, a one horse town( actually had several horses). It ... read more

Our room was so hot last night that neither of us slept much. It's suppose to be another hot day and we have to climb again. Left the hotel at 7 am. Felt good to be outside. The first part of our ride was pretty smooth and straight. We stopped in Villafranca for breakfast. Beautiful town set up against the mountains. From here the climb began. We saw the the big group of bikers roll through. Being Sunday there were several large groups riding up and down the mountain for fun, I mean exercise. The climb took us over 6 hours. It was hot and I was fatigued. We had booked a room so we kept trudging along. I had to get off and walk my bike just to use different muscles. Our ride ended in ... read more

Today we rose early, skipped breakfast and headed to Ponferrada, in the dark, with headlamps glowing. It was a suburban walk through housing ranging from fairly urban to very upmarket. Ponferrada is known for its gold, silver and coal assets, as well as being the location of a large nuclear power plant. Walking through town was quiet and the only people around were fellow travellers or locals out early with their little dogs, encouraging them to do what they can't do in the appartment. We saw the ancient castle with the remains of a moat and the cathedral but decided to just pass through to get a few kilometres up before it became too hot. We met an Australian couple, Ray and Lynn from Port Macquarie, who were doing the Camino from Pamplona. Lynn was having ... read more

We rose early and had breakfast at the alburgue. The walk ahead was largely along minor roads with a concrete barrier between us and the traffic. It was pretty quiet and on the left side was forest and the Rio Pereje, a rapid river which accompanied us all the way to Herrerias, so we were well compensated for following the road by the aromatic scent of the moist morning forest. We passed through a number of small villages, Pereje being the first. We called in at the bar for our first coffee of the day and the walls were adorned with stuffed animals and small agricultural implements from yesteryear. The road out of this village took us back to the larger road and again we followed the river through three more villages until we reached Herrerias. ... read more

Up early and had breakfast at a bar near the cathedral. We walked out in poor light and had our new ponchos on as it was raining. They seem to work well But at the edge of town we found a spot to take off a layer as they tend to keep the heat in. The first 6kms were pretty uneventful and the paths were very good. Some of the path was on the road and every time a vehicle passed we had to turn our backs to it or get a free shower. The road turned to gravel and a trail of walkers braved the wind and rain. The scent of pine forests followed us most of the way and brightened up an otherwise damp day. At Murias de Rechivaldo we had a coffee and ... read more

Sorry I´ve been out of range for a bit, and to be honest I´ve been struggling to think about the trip coherently this time around. We were well aware that the camino would be a different experience for Kelly and Maia and I together than it was for me on my own - and as I had already mentioned, my memory is faulty (or at least incomplete). But there are two comparisons that I think are valid: firstly that the camino is MUCH more crowded in September than June, and that secondly there are vastly more women that men walking than I remembered. Last night in the hostel there were twently females and six males. We´ve had to miss a few things this time around. We knew that would be the case. Kelly´s had a bit ... read more

Sept 30 My leg will not stand up to the climb to Rabanel and definitely not down the other side.I'm disapointed but I do want to finish,so we are taking a bus to Ponferrada. This is a large town 62000,but the old part insulates you somewhat.Being Sunday everything is closed,so we didn't get to see the castle built by the Knights Templer.Denis I did get some pictures for you though,I know you are a fan.I also had my first plate of pulpo (octopus),pretty good actually. Oct 1 Villafranca 23 kms.Tested my leg today,we walked with Mary and Paul from Ireland.Mary walks faster and talks faster than anyone I know.Seriously! It really made the day go byquickly.Sampled some wine at a bodega along the way.The warm weather is back and the vineyards. We saw people harvesting the grapes so I ... read more

Hello No rain today. Before I go on, here is my thought for the day. Europeans don't use wash cloths... Fact. How in the hell do you wash your butt? I use shower gel and I think there might be laws against that stuff. I brought one, don't worry. You can smell my fingers wheN I get back if you don't believe me. Yesterday we passed through a small town and went inside the local cathedral to say a quick prayer. Every town has a church and all the bells work and are used on the hour. They protect the alter area by putting a wrought iron gate across the alter so no one try's to steal anything, but so everyone can come in for a quick prayer. Now mind you, this is a very small ... read more

APOLOGIES..... ACCIDENTALLY MOVED THIS ENTRY TO 'SAVED' AFTER I ADDED A VIDEO .....SO THEN NEEDED TO 'REPUBLISH' TO MAKE IT ABLE TO BE READ AGAIN... ONLY THING DIFFERENT IS THE ADDED VIDEO - J XXX After the meal at the bar across the road, we went straight back to the parish hostel in the grounds of an old convent.....It was quite noisy, and more crowded - our 'overflow room ' had filled up with quite a few Italian cyclists as well as other walking pilgrims... The toilets were on another floor and the toilet/shower area was really cramped and badly designed- you open the door of the unisex showers right onto the guys using the urinals - kind of made me feel like scurrying out quickly and averting the eyes... Settled to go to sleep early ... read more

We left at about 8am after collecting our clothes from in front of the fire...everything was dry.....we had breakfast before we left....we had luke warm toast....very nice.....doesnt take much for us to get excited these days...... We climb to the Cruz de Ferro which is highest point of the whole walk today...1505m ......we have been steadily climbing so today it is only a 400m climb..... The Cruz de Ferro is a humble monument to mark a noble gateway. This simple iron cross stands on a weathered pole which has become one of the symbols of the pilgrim way of St James. At the base of the cross is a steadily growing pile of stones from people that have either picked one up along the way or bought with them from their home to place all there ... read more
