The day dawned...... the LAST day of walking the Camino de Santiago - Camino Frances - .... it was hard to get my head around it really... We set off early - at the same time as 'the texans' though we left them behind after a few kms .... the track was clear at first , and through lovely forests - but became more and more busy, with dozens of pilgrims both before and after us.....The closer we came - the more despondent I felt....There is a point about 5km out of Santiago called Mt De Gozo - and is traditionally the point where pilgrims could first sight Santiago and the Cathedral... I dont know if it's because of contemporary building etc but I couldnt see the Cathedral - though Santiago itself was in plain sight.... ... read more

LAST day today before we get to Santiago tomorrow........ It was a beautiful day's walk - for the first time since we started it was warm enough to walk in shorts alone - NO striped leggings! or knee braces... walked with bare legs and arms in the sunshine ... lovely. We met James and Angie again - stirred James up because he wasnt walking with his pack - Diane called him pilgrim wannabe :-) - he took it in good spirit. We took a few more pics this morning of our fellow pilgrims more than the scenery..... stopped in a forest for an alfresco lunch - more pics - of boots and leaves :-) Walking through the forest was lovely, sun shining, wind in the trees, bird calls, and Eucalypts too- see below for little video ... read more

A gentle climb started off the next morning, we walked past a field where a cow was licking a bull's head - so THAT's what a cowlick is .....We walked through lovely old forests, took a little video of the sounds in the forest and walked into Melide for lunch. Melide is quite a big town - pop. 8000 - with bustling traffic, kids in school uniforms, traffic lights ....we sat in the square eating our yoghurt and fruit with our boots off and an older Spanish lady came up to us, spoke in rapid Spanish then leaned to kiss us both on each cheek - made me feel a bit teary because such encounters seem to really bring home to me the realisation of being part of something ... The Camino De Santiago is so ... read more

Day 34 - Despite waking in the night with really sore legs , slept quite well apart from that .... we left at about 7.30 am, and found breakfast on the way a few km down the road.... The walking was SO much better , it seemed to work having done that v difficult last 8km the day before. There were less people around, time again to ENJOY the areas we were walking through. We saw U.S couple again Jonathon and Lindsay and had a little group whinge about the newer pilgrims...as I write that I know and feel how ungracious it is - to have that manner towards people who after all,are also on their own journey just as I am on mine ... but there you go..... sometimes I'm not nice :-/ I ordered ... read more

We set off, originally for Portomarin, a 24km stretch with a bit of a climb ..........for the previous almost 700km we had spent time with and passing/being passed by folk who seemed to be of like mind........we'd been in numerous Albergues which were all physically quite different to each other, yet their inhabitants whatever their country of origin were universally the same............ people talked quietly to each other in the sleeping areas, lights went out at 10.30 each night, fellow pilgrims were helpful and respectful - for instance people took short showers - ensuring hot water left for the next person - meals and resources (eg for footcare etc ) were shared sometimes. There was a camaraderie built on the toil of walking the shared path , on the amused and rueful recognition of the aching ... read more

We accidentally had a large pilgrim menu for Lunch - due to a break down in communication with the women in the bar..... walking after soup/mains/dessert was.... sloshy ! lol I'm glad we didnt have the bottle of wine that we'd normally drink after an evenings pilgrim menu ... We continued all that day through beautiful scenery - like walking through a constant postcard..... just as we came into Triacastella we passed a tree that had a (thankfully) English translation also on the plaque saying the tree was approx 800 yrs old - We sloshed along... it was a long day of 30km - happily our backpacks were waiti... read more

APOLOGIES..... ACCIDENTALLY MOVED THIS ENTRY TO 'SAVED' AFTER I ADDED A VIDEO .....SO THEN NEEDED TO 'REPUBLISH' TO MAKE IT ABLE TO BE READ AGAIN... ONLY THING DIFFERENT IS THE ADDED VIDEO - J XXX After the meal at the bar across the road, we went straight back to the parish hostel in the grounds of an old convent.....It was quite noisy, and more crowded - our 'overflow room ' had filled up with quite a few Italian cyclists as well as other walking pilgrims... The toilets were on another floor and the toilet/shower area was really cramped and badly designed- you open the door of the unisex showers right onto the guys using the urinals - kind of made me feel like scurrying out quickly and averting the eyes... Settled to go to sleep early ... read more

We walked about 16km and were having a rest and something to eat in Rabanal...... My back was starting to feel.... under strain.... - I think it began after the sleep in the schoolhouse/albergue where it was so cold ( though we weren't cold in the beds) and it was a bit of a poor and saggy mattress.... Originally we had planned to walk further on, but as we were looking around the village the SONIC snoring man walked into town...... cannily we watched where he went and he continued to walk on through and OUT of the town..... So we stayed! Well that was 1 reason - another was that we'd heard that an order of monks resident in the village have a vespers service 7pm each night with Gregorian chants...so we checked in to ... read more

We were walking again, still, in very cold weather and as we walked this day we were headed towards snow topped mountains and the winds blowing from there were seriously FREEZING ... I didnt really feel the cold while walking ... but as soon as the body stopped moving.. BBBRRRRR.... We walked past a memorial for someone who had died in 2005.......and a little later came upon a donativo stall with juices and fruit 'refreshment for Pilgrims' , including a home baked kind of meusli slice thing..... They seemed like hippy kind of guys running, there was a labyrinth of stones, and the bed/sleeping area of one of them was just under a blue tarpaulin.... We saw James and Angie again here and James felt the need for some sort of apology to Diane over SOMETHING ... read more

Sat. 28th April- after a fitful night's sleep in the Casa Rural ( the warm room which we so appreciated on arrival was stifling during the night !) we packed up , inserted into our pockets the 'man size' serviettes nicked from last night's dinner table (they become Tissues Del Dias - or toilet paper when we use the unsupplied toilets in a Bar) and we set off for Leon...... it was about an 18km walk to reach the town outskirts... many people - and the guide book even suggested it, catch a bus TO Leon from the last stop before as the walk is along the highway and a very tedious way in through airport/industrial area. But we didnt want to do that.... we ended up walking in and decided on once getting there that ... read more
