It´s a wide open road (Wide Open Road, The Triffids) I´m actually in Sahagun not Leon, but don´t worry about that... So today I passed the half way point of the camino, at least if I finish in Santiago and don´t go all the way to Fisterre on the coast at the end. So I suppose I should reflect a bit on the walking... The last few days have been across the Meseta - the flat highland plains of Spain. It reminds me a lot of northern Victoria. We could have been near Cobram today if there had been a few orchards around. I find it all rather comforting and easy to rack up some big walking days (no hills!), but a lot of others really struggle with it. I think a lot of it is ... read more

It´s been some time since our last entry back in Burgos. We arrived in El Burgo Ranero at midday in hot sunshine. The weather has certainly taken a turn for the better, and we´re having to make sure that we get all our walking out of the way before lunch because it gets unbearably hot in the afternoons. Anyway I´ll give you the day to day happenings after we left Burgos. Before that, Happy 30th Birthday to Alice (niece) for May 3rd. Happy 1st Birthday to Johnnie (great-nephew) for May 7th and Happy Birthdays to Annie (sister) and to Howard (Madeleine´s brother-in-law) for May 13th! Mon May 7th Burgos - Hornillos 27Kms As we left Burgos the "Super Moon" was still shining brightly and we saw loads of storks nesting on the church towers. The walk ... read more

If you're going to cry walking around a city, León is the one to do it in... Sometimes the Camino can be tough, especially when you are all by yourself. You definitely have your breakdown days when you are taking almost six weeks to walk... It is a very emotional journey. Being away from family makes it even harder when you are having a rough day. But more about that at the bottom of this blog entry... Day 22: Carrión to Calzadilla de la Cueza What a day this was!! We had been warned that todays walk included a long gravel road with absolutely nothing on it, but I didn't know it was going to be as bad as it was. There is nowhere to take shelter from the sun, rain or cold during this stretch. ... read more

Kavin aikaisin aamupalalla. Olikin aika viileaa, vaikka toki sortseilla tarkeni. Huomasin etta oikeaan reiteen sattui vahan, kun kavelin. Kavelin siita huolimatta bussiasemalle. Lahto Leoniin oli klo 11.15. Leonissa menin bussilla keskustaan, jalan ja auringon takia. Kysyin bussissa naisilta majapaikoista. He neuvoivat minulle pensionin plaza mayorilta. Lausuivat muuten kalje eika kajje, mika on nykyaan harvinaista espanjassa. Pension maksoi 20 €, otin sen. Nautin lounaan ja kiertelin ympari kaupunkia. Nukuin hyvin - keskusaukion jatkuva halina ei haitannut.... read more

So Leon was the place I decided to propose. I thought about Ponferrada, but the timing never seemed right. Melissa wanted to see the cathedral since she had been sleeping when I checked it out the day before, so I agreed to go with her. The cathedral is easily the greatest building I've ever been in. It's vaulted stone ceiling soars to hundreds of feet, and the walls are almost covered in Stained Glass. The effect is amazing, as the walls are awash in light but the floor and walking area is gloomy. Melissa and I did the tour of the cathedral museum (more Jesus and an incredibly creepy statue of death). As we were leaving the cathedral we went to the front of it and were looking down on the altar, this is where I ... read more

Yesterday evening I met a number of people at the albergue. Two guys from Taiwan, two from the UK, two girls from Finland and a couple from Canada. Everyone was around 20, which is not very common along the camino, so it was nice for a change not always having to deal with people who are more than double my age. From Sahagún to Léon was almost exclusively like the picture on the side. Plain straight roads, flanked with trees. I knew that this was what it would be this flat from Castrojeriz to Léon, and I do enjoy it. I have been able to do a couple of more kilometers a day during the flat stages in order to be in no hurry during the later uphill stages. ... read more

Today we said good-bye to our rural retreat in Ubiarco, within view of the Bay of Biscay. The nearest settlement of any note is the 11th century town of Santillina del Mar. The coastal area is very much like the East Otago coastline of New Zealand between Waitati and Waikouaiti. During our stay we met a German couple at the hotel. They visit the area at least twice a year and were very helpful in giving good advice for places to visit. A good study of the road map showed there were several toll roads to detour around, and detour them we did, much to the annoyance of Miss GPS. From Ubiarco to Oviedo we did not need the GPS so she was tucked up in the glove box. The early part of the drive was ... read more

Calais to Leon in 3 days. It’s hardly around the world in 80, but it’s been quite eventful. From knocking off somebody’s wing mirror in Rouen, to running out of water and showering with Volvic, but hey, what else would you expect? There’s been a fair amount of country seen, but with most of it at 105kmph, it’s not much to write home about. Spent an afternoon in Chartres, it’s a must visit if you’re ever nearby. If you like that sort of thing the Cathedral is amazing. The pictures won’t do it justice but it’s quite stunning. Supposedly more stained glass windows than any other Cathedral in the world. As the journey continued on a quick pace down to Spain a stop at La Rochelle (Which I always thought was a made up place in ... read more

We passed the half way point today. Only 380 km left to walk! Weather was "difficult" yesterday (we shouldn´t complain about it but rather learn to appreciate it)! anyway, we were glad to reach the hostel which was welcoming and friendly. We´re trying to upload a video we took but it's very slow so apologies now if it doesn´t work. We took a day off 2 days ago- unplanned but feeling quite under the weather. Both of us used the extra time to sleep and relax. It seemed to work. Nous avons franchi la moitie de la distance, enfin ou deja! Il y a des jours c'est deja et d'autres jours c'est enfin. Nous avons pris une journee de repos il y a deux jours. Nous avons dormi une bonne partie de la journee, le temps ... read more
