Today has been a beautiful day for walking, we covered another 21kms in warm sunshine & light breeze. Each day we commence with what seems like a walk up "skyline" (Corona residents know it). The fields go on & on, true broadacre farming. Many of the farmers are out plowing the fields with their John Deere tractors. Yesterday was a special day, at the end we had to be picked up and taken about 3km to our hotel in a very small village (70 people in all). The hotel was modern with one of the best dinners we have had. The surprise though was the visit to the local Catholic church; built in the 15th cent. With an amazing altar. I got to stand in the high pulpit (photo last blog). The lady guidung us has ... read more

So we made it, the last 20km to Castrojerez and the end of our first half of the Camino. I have entrusted my staff to a publican at the entrance to town who has promised me he will keep it until 2016 when we return. It felt really strange walking the last km to the hotel without it. Mixed emotions today, hard to believe it is all over. We would dearly love to carry on but also very excited about seeing the kids, Suzzie and Scott, their children and Pat/John in Chicago and Cleveland. Have been walking with a guy from Canada, Jonathan. He is 30 and very nearly gave up on day one. He owns a very successful business building trailers for truck and trailer units in Canada. He employs 230 staff and is a ... read more

Ola, Well today we started traveling the Maesta. The plains. We will have 4 more days of walking flat before we get some terrain. We willcross the 300 mile point tommarow. Damn I actually walked 300 miles. Its a lot longer than you think. And yet its been quite short. And to think I did it with a broken finger to boot. This brings a new meaning to picking my nose as it barely fits. Having 8 hours to attempt that feat gives one something to look forward too though. Enough of the booger talk. We have a couple walking who are blind. Blind! If that is not inspiring enough they always seem to be ahead of me. I would give them wrong directions but that is wrong. There is also a woman who has walked ... read more

Hello again everybody! This time I am writing on a very hot Tueday evening in Casterojeriz at a municpal albergue. Yesterday I left Burgos in the early afternoon but had a cool)ish) walk with a breeze and some cloud cover. I went as far as the beginning for the Messetta at Rabe de las Calzada which was only about 15 km after the previous day´s 35 km ! Today has been about 25 km. My feet are well and recover quickly from each day of walking. Despite all that is said about the Messette it is not that bleak. Especially when as with today I left the albergue 45 mins before sunrise. In some ways the sunrises are the rationale for this walk. It is amazing to see the colours change from black to purples to ... read more

One cannot be lucky always. I woke up this morning very well rested, I had bought earplugs which fitted incredibly snugly, so I couldn't hear anything. Too bad I wanted to wake up in time to get going, because when I woke up, almost all beds around me were empty, even though it was just 6.45 in the morning. Camino-people are early birds. However, when I got down to the bike stand, i saw that the tube was totally out of air. After a while of pondering the alternatives, I came across with a guy who apparently had been partying all night. He knew very little english, but we understood each other enough for him to lend me his garage, and give me a bike repair kit (which I hadn't brought myself... stupid me), help me ... read more

There are many ways you can tell that the night before crossed some kind of line in terms of decency. People may glance at you with newfound suspicion. An earthy, vaguely unnatural smell may fill the air. Or, in my case, you may be awoken half an hour after the official check out time by an old Spanish man repeatedly smacking you in the face with a walking stick. If you ever experience this particular reintroduction to real life, you should definitly assume the worst. I'm not sure exactly which of my or my accomplices crimes warranted such viscious action by this bastard of a Spaniard, but it can't have been good. The night started innocently enough. A simple meal with a few fellow pilgrims oiled with quality red wine. Then a move to another bar ... read more

Last night we stayed in Hontanas - wow, what a great place. I loved it, such a really lovely, friendly place. I walked with Armando today. It was a very low key morning. We had a slow breakfast and then headed out. The morning really felt like a holiday, we walked slowly, took lots of drinks breaks and rests, and generally had a very nice time. Along the way we stopped and picked up stamps for my postcards - the ones I wrote days ago. So, they are finally in the post now. The old guy we bought the stamps off was just such a lovely man. Unfortunately, our very cruisy morning meant we had a long hard walk in the sun in the afternoon. It was tough!! When I finally hit Boadilla my first thought ... read more
