Hola everyone, My body has been back in Hobart since the 15th and progressively other bits of me are landing too! It's not really my intention to try and sum up such an incredible trip as the one I've just had. Enough to say that on all levels, spiritual, emotions, mental and physical it provided a much needed change and expansion to my view of the world. Spain is a wonderful country and very dear to my heart. There would be much that Australia could learn from Spain especially in terms of generosity, courteousness and respect for elders. I can really recommend the Camino as a way to reconnect with the earth. Walking, eating, washing, conversation for 35-40 days is a blessed release from much of the baggage we carry with us, or I do anyway. ... read more

Hola everyone, Its been ages since my last blog or so it feels. So much has happened and today is the final day of walking this incredible road. What will it be like to stop? Today is to Muxia tomorrow I bus back to Santiago and Tuesday fly to Alicante south of Barcelona. The walk to Finnisterre was 3 days since last Tuesday and included a night under the stars with my RAB survival zone bivvy protecting me from a huge dew fall. I slept a fulll 8 hours that night which was one of the best sleeps Ive had in Spain. Cape Faro lighthouse was spectacular and the cafe so good in ´the rain and high wind. Wrote emails and a postcard until my friends got there. Last night it was 3 Aussies for dinner ... read more

This pension has no public pc but the arrival into Santiago was quite an experience and somsthing to be remembered. Im writing this blog a day after. This morning I tried to find the local market but ended up doing a big loop of the city so I now have my bearings! Petra who has studied architecture says Santiago is even more the quintessential old town than anything seen so far. I heard the word Australia mentioned by the priest at mass today but this would not have been my entry on the roll of pilgrims. Someone who came in today from Sydney. I met them later after mass. I may wait another day befote going on to Finnisterre as I think they will swing the incrnsor tomorrow which is Santiago Cathedral's main drawcard for me. ... read more

Buenos Dias, Domingo, and it is going to be a special day with the final 20km. I have walked even more than the 800km because I went back a town for someone in the early stages. No taxis or busses and carried my pack every day! In Santiago I might even weigh it! Yesterday was great as I found John again, the chap from Glastonbury who sees things in a remakably similar way to me. I would love to go and do one of his courses in astrology and astromony. I feel so fortunate today to also have Petra from Rotterdam to walk with. She is here before travelling to Australia before the end of the year. Just in case I manage to forget there is a website called helpx.net that I heard of yesterday. Similar ... read more

Yes, well folks it all comes down to the next two days as far as finishing the first 800km is concerned. It is hard to believe the number of towns that we have all been through which have a large dependence on pilgrim euros. Of course as soon as I am 50m on the far side they merge into a collection of towns in my head unless there is something special about them. I am looking forward already to being reunited with all the gear I sent on from St Jean Pied de Port, Pamplona and Logrono! Not to mention my compostella and a hug from the bishop. My real hope for Santiago is to be reunited with many pilgrims I have jumped ahead of along the way of course. In Galicia there is a rollo ... read more

Buenas Tardes! Have arrived in Hospital Orbigo (an early pilgrim hospital I think) just on 5pm after a day of some 36km from Leon. My feet were telling me to keep on and maybe have a very short day tomorrow or perhaps pick up and extra day for laying on the beach at Alicante on the way home. Whatever it was the R&R seems to have worked well in Leon. About 280 km left to Santiago. Pretty much a solitary day today interspersed with several albums played on the smartphone to break the silence. Met someone towing a handmade trailer attached to their backpack to remove weight from their feet. The scenery has changed today from as were get nearer to the mountains. I had corn fields and some other crop which looked like lettuce. Thanks ... read more

Europe » Spain » Castile & León » León September 17th 2012

Hola! Have arrived into another largish town, Leon with a magnificent collection of architecture. I just realised that I have been very lucky to find the only hostelling international accomodation anywhere so far on the trip and it´s very close to the centre of the old town. I have my own bathrom! Unfortunately I think I have sent my hostelling card ahead of me or perhaps it is gone astray as quite a few items have. The general experience among pilgrims seems to be a level of fatigue where absent mindedness accounts for those things going missing that the fathers had put there only the night before! (Monty Python rules) I met a scots woman Muriel and her husband Chris few nights ago and made them coffee on the road yesterday early morning which according Muriel ... read more

What have the romans ever done for us? today we had a 17 km walk along a an ancient romand road which was less interesting than watching paint dry! I stopped for a breakfast at some point just after the sun rose but this was the only interesting part. Once again the prior evening visit to the Supermarcado and the ever ready Optimus Crux gas burner saved the sanity! Tonight I am in Terradillos de los Templarios and all the talk is about how to manage the distance into Leon, the risk of missing out on a bed if arriving to late of a day and the weather which seems to be getting warmer! This afternoon has been spent with large tankards of beer in hand and a good conversation with a man from Quebec who ... read more

Hola, I have finally come across an internet PC with a working card reader for camera cards _ yippeeeee! Today was excellent with a 10% gradient climb shortly after leaving Casterojiz in time to see the sun rise from alto mostelares. Later in the walk of 25km it became very humid. Along the way was a beautiful river and puente and a 6km walk along a canal into the town of Fromista. Today I also had to commence major drainage works on a big blister on the heel of one foot but the surgery seems to have been a success! Rain is forecast for tomorrow all along the NW of Spain and should make for interesting conditions on route. Still can´t get a grip on how inexpensive things are here. Along with a shopping list including ... read more

Hello again everybody! This time I am writing on a very hot Tueday evening in Casterojeriz at a municpal albergue. Yesterday I left Burgos in the early afternoon but had a cool)ish) walk with a breeze and some cloud cover. I went as far as the beginning for the Messetta at Rabe de las Calzada which was only about 15 km after the previous day´s 35 km ! Today has been about 25 km. My feet are well and recover quickly from each day of walking. Despite all that is said about the Messette it is not that bleak. Especially when as with today I left the albergue 45 mins before sunrise. In some ways the sunrises are the rationale for this walk. It is amazing to see the colours change from black to purples to ... read more
