From Burgos it was farewell to my friend from here. I will be walking on my own from now on. So on wards westwards, one foot at a time. I had 4 days rest for travelling to Madrid and returning to Burgos 19th June 2009 with two cousins who walked with me for a few days. It took most of the day to drive to Burgos, arriving at the albergue at 1020pm (closed at 1030). The hospitalero let us in stating we were taking the last couple of beds, but in fact there were more than 10 beds still available. Due to very noisy celebrations, sleep was difficult. Burgos to Carrion de Los Condes: 87.2km (Total 432.1km) Days 20 to 23 Leaving Burgos, we came across literally full streets of discarded rubbish everywhere from the celebrations ... read more

Well it’s been a while since I have had internet availability so will be quick today also, I have been meeting a lot of locals along the towns and all are very friendly. In Redecillo, that night we had a very severe storm with hail stones. My friend called it a ¨hail Mary¨. Belorrado was a lovely town and the walking amongst the beautiful tracks with clouded skies was special. I got a happy birthday candle stuck on an apple on the 6th of June for my birthday, it was a nice thought and the apple was crunchy too. At a town called Tosantos the Albergue was run a Spanish man who lived in the old wooden and mud house that had recently been renovated. The was an ancient pilgrim hospital in midlevel times. It was ... read more

Spent a whole day in Burgos, the city with one of the most beautiful cathedral in Spain, spent over 4 hours within its walls. Burgos Cathedral or Cathedral de Santa Maria was built in the 13th century and combines many different architectural styles applied over the centuries. My favourite style is the Gothic sections with the gargoyles. The tall spires are a delight to look up at and the surrounding medieval streets are just full of life. The famous El Sid and his wife are buried directly underneath the huge star lantern at the heart of the cathedral. Also known as Count Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, born in 1040, he was a Muslim. ... read more

Burgos was during centuries a major stop for pilgrimms to Santiago de Compastella. Still is. You see many people in the streets with two walking sticks, painful feet and tired looking. I met one this afternoon. Heinz from Germany. Of all names. Heinz comes from Regensburg. He planned to walk for approx 6 weeks. Heinz is about 55 years old and happy. He started 14 days ago somewhere in France and crossed the border mountains with snow. Every day 25/30 km. Today he had an extra rest day. Met him in the touristic tram. Brand new and seats for one small spanish or half a dutch or german. The driver was selling the tickets. Took your 4 euro went 50 metre farther to an automatic ticket selling system brought it to you personally and came 10 minutes ... read more

Also Spain is suffering from the crisis. About 18% people jobless. Lots of beggars in the streets and selfbuilt cartonbox houses. Even if you deduct the big informal workforce in Spain probably there are still 10% real without job. I suffer only by taking Metro instead of taxis. Madrid has a very efficient clear system. There are even info points and people for selling tickets. Went by metro early this morning to catch the train to Burgos as station on my way to Paris another 1.200 km approx. Spanish people are readers. Not only lot of bookstores but also people reading in the Metro. Real heavy hardcovered books. Since the bombing in trains in 2004 Spain checks all the luggage before entering the train in the same way as they do at airports. People are used ... read more

Yo empecé a subir hace 3 ... read more

... and i am really looking forward to heading back home for a while so i can see all my family and friends! i am going to make a list of all the food i want to scoff while i´m back as camp food hasn´t exactly been a great dining pleasure - fried stuff with cheese and watery soup, mmmmmm! on the plus side, i have lost a lot of weight and trousers which i actually split before i left home because my legs were too chunky are now like hipsters on me! so if anyone is trying to lose weight i recommend the camp diet - eat very small portions and drink nothing but water! obviously i am going to be sad to leave as well... i´ve been really fortunate that all the teachers i´ve ... read more

... and i must be having fun because i haven´t written on my blog for a fortnight! so the last group of kids came and went in a flash... one girl got thrown out for smoking weed and some others got cautioned for having a party in the boys bedroom (half of the guests being girls!) other than that, we enjoyed the usual fun and activities of camp life and i particularly enjoyed a day trip out to lerma, which was beautiful... saw lots of churches and monuments set in the vast spanish countrside. saying goodbye yet again was sad... especially as this time i was also saying goodbye to 4 of the teachers. i´m particularly missing orla, who i shared a room with, as we had such a laugh! on her last night we went ... read more

I didn't have an internet connection last night, so I missed uploading this blog..... El Cid’s Burgos Our day in Burgos began with breakfast again, and once again it was the classic European fare full of meats, cheeses and fruits with a croissant thrown in. Scrambled eggs, of course. All of the hotels have a curious way of cooking our style of bacon. They don’t. It’s very limp, almost like it was boiled, not broiled. There haven’t been many takers. The European “bacon” is actually thinly sliced ham that has been salted for preservation. It’s more like prosciutto that is found in Italy. After breakfast, it was out to the bus where we met our guide for the day, Luis. He is a very proud Spaniard and an even prouder “Burgos-ian”. His love for his city ... read more
