21st december 2008 Among the highest and most emblematic mounts of
Burgos, the
Mencilla is probably the most loved by the people of the capital (Burgos, I mean).
With 1.932 meters (=6.339 feet), it´s not the highest peak of the province. Higher are mount Trigaza (2.035m=6.667feet) and mount San Millán (2.132m=6.995feet), but Mencilla is the only one that has a ski resort on its slope,
though it´s very small and quite unuseful. There are two mountain huts, one of the provincial administration and the other one belongs to the mountaineers. And the main reason that makes burgaleses love this mount is a tradition: sunday before Christmas we go up to the summit.
Several years ago only a few went up. The first time I walked up was three years ago and this and last year around 2.000 people did the same.
When I am in the outdoors I like to be alone, quiet, only me and wilderness, but I also get moved when I see that so many people decide to show their devotion to the mountains and nature.
This year everything looked specially beautiful. The previous years it didn´t snow at the beginning of the winter, and there was only a little bit of ice. This year it was completely different, for some snow had fallen for a couple of weeks, and since a height of around 1.400 meters (4.600 feet) everything was covered in white.
The skies were deep blue and the sun was shining strong around midday. It was one of those winters in Castile in which the air is
so quiet and clear that the views can reach as far as something intercepts what lies behind. Looking northwest the Alto Campóo and the mountains of Palencia could be seen, and looking southeast, the Sistema Central and the range of Madrid. That´s to say, the whole of Castile, from the limits with the province of León to the mountains of Guadalajara (Ayllon range)!! We were seeing mountains located 150 kilometers (95 miles) far away!!
This year I walked up with Florentino. I met him at the church. Every year, before starting the walk there is a mass at the romanesque church of Pineda de la Sierra, and there the Nativity scene is blessed and then it is took to the summit ( I nearly had to do this). Although I´m not Christian I always like to go to this mass because Juanito, very good friend of mine, is the acolyte. As a matter of fact he invites me and his girlfriends every year to lunch. This year we had
olla podrida, and it was really marvellous.
We walked the loma de las corzas (roe deer slope), a route I didn´t do before. It´s longer but more panoramic.
On the summit
people drink a toast to the new year and have some
polvorones. The atmosphere is very good indeed. Florentino and me had a gin tonic and then some people invited us to polvorones. I met some people I was looking forward to meeting. The views, the effort, the gin tonic, the sugar of the sweets, the people, all together made every singlecorporal hair of my body to bristle up with emotion and therefore I wasn´t able to close properly the tonic bottle. Then it was when all the stuff in my rucksack get ton(ic)ed up.
