I’m pretty sure that everything interesting about this island was already told as Tenerife is the best known and the most visited from the Canarian islands. On the other hand I am convinced that no matter how good narrator you are, words are not enough to describe the beauty and greatness of this island. I myself had read a lot about it, had seen lots and lots of pictures and felt prepared to meet Tenerife. Well, believe me, I was not! From the first day until the last one I lived in a continuous state of bewilderment, I was like a child left alone in a toys shop. You simply can not capture either in words or on photos the amazing beauty you find all over the island, no matter if this refers to the multi-coloured ... read more

Shelley, Jonalyn, and I (Gary) are in London until 1 January 2008. We’re having a great time and would like to share some of our adventures with you. Thanks for visiting our blog. A Relaxing Week in Tenerife The school system in the UK consists of “terms.” There are 3 of them: Fall, Winter, and Spring. (This is different from “semesters” of which there are only 2. I don’t know why this difference in terminology exists.) The “terms” are about 15 weeks long. In the USA many people are familiar with “Spring Break.” It’s a week off of school in the spring. In the UK there is a Fall break called “Half Term.” Essentially it’s a week off about halfway through the term. This is so ingrained in the culture even Shelley’s university program (in London ... read more

Wow! I just got back from one of the coolest (and hardest) things I've ever done, climbing to the top of the 3rd biggest volcano in the world! 6 of us got dropped off yesterday at about 1:30 at the base of the mountain, about 2000 meters. Our goal was to hike up to a refuge that was a few hundred meters from the top of Teide, stay the night, and wake up before dawn to hike up to see the sunrise over all of the islands. It was unknown, however, if the refuge would actually be open, and we were told to hike back down to meet a car at 8 if it wasn't. The hike was amazing and pretty tough (uphill all the way carrying large backpacks). It was worth it when we caught ... read more

Yesterday was the third 4th of July in a row that I've managed to spend out of the country (although I'm not sure if the Virgin Islands really counts). It was really odd here because there's absolutely no other Americans here, so it was pretty easy to forget what day it was. My boss here did say he wanted to get cakes to celebrate getting rid of America. It's really interesting to see that despite a lot of inequalities that we still have in our country, the majority of us are generally much more tolerant and aware of other cultures than in countries that are less diverse. I spent 9 hours on a boat yesterday, it was a lot of fun! I was on 2 4.5 hour trips on the nicest boat that we go on, ... read more

I'm just coming to the end of my second weekend in Tenerife. If anything, it was even more action-packed than last weekend. On Saturday, I went down to the port early to go diving. We went out on a zodiac with about eight people to do a drift dive a little ways off shore. The current was really strong, we had to pull ourselves down to the botton with the anchor line of the boat. The dive was cool though, we didn't see anything huge, but we saw some cool eels, our guide fed one a piece of fish, which it devoured. After I was done diving, I met up with some of the other people in our group at the beach, where we hung out for the rest of the afternoon. We planned on taking ... read more

I´ve now been on Tenerife for a week and have gotten into the rhythm of the program. I can´t believe I only have 2 weeks left here, it´s going really fast! My favorite days are definitely when I´m out on the boats, the weather has gotten really nice, so I´m getting lots of sun! Yesterday I did 3 2-hour trips, we saw pilot whales on each trip. Actually, I haven´t had a trip yet where we haven´t seen them. I like people watching on the boats almost as much as I like the whale-watching. Most all the tourist here are British, they are just as bad as Americans when they travel, if not worse! I love talking to the kids on the boats, although there aren´t many yet because the schools in Europe don´t let out ... read more
