With only days to go until our daunting new adventure began it seemed like a good idea to relax and enjoy while we had the time. Woolly says – Never being one to turn down a bit of R and R I happily complied and there was bound to be tapas! With this in mind we spent our last night at Torrox Costa taking our usual promenade, I had spied the small lighthouse a few days previously and suggested we stretch our paws a little further and head for it, well it was a guaranteed photo opportunity wasn’t it! Having trotted on ahead from the aged humans I arrived at a sign, my heart started to race and I looked under my paws…… lots of glass but nothing to see, I tried jumping on the glass ... read more

Life can be very pleasant when the sun shines on a daily basis and there is little to do…… Woolly says – There is always plenty to do and having spent a few days huffing and puffing I insisted that we visit the local town of Nerja (pronounced Nerca), with a camera this time, To be fair to my small friend it was long overdue so to start his day well the roof came off the convertible and he cruised into the car park playing the super star! Woolly says – I can’t help being a star and watching the jaws dropping as I arrived in style surely befits my status. Parking is an issue in this lovely town so having had a minor argument over the need to walk and Jo having given in as ... read more

Our last day in this wonderful beach town. It reminds me a little of Seaside Oregon. What better way to spend the day then at the beach. I actually went swimming in the Mediterranean Sea! We have enjoyed our time here immensely. We have met many people who come here to vacation from all over the Europe. We also discovered tapas! In Spain in the evening many restaurants serve tapas when you order a glass of beer or wine. A tapa is a little plate with an appetizer size dish of your choice of a menu item. Each glass of beer equals one tapa. The thought, of course, is that after sampling a few, you will choose one and order it for dinner. But after sampling one or two at two or three different restaurants, who ... read more

We saw the most amazing sight today, it is hard to find words to describe it. But of course I will try. The Caves of Nerja are just a short bus ride east of town. We almost passed on going to see them but at breakfast another guest exhorted us to go. So off we went. What a thing to see. The caves are an impressive array of stalactites and stalagmites. The caverns are huge and ramble deep into the mountain, up and down 400 stairs. At the end is the Hall of the Cataclysm where you circle the world's largest stalactite, verified by the Guiness Book of World Records. The public area represents only a third of the entire cave. The history of the caves and some additional photos are on line at www.cuevadenerja.es We ... read more

One of the sights of Nerja is the Balcony of Europe. It is a bluff that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea. A castle and later a fort occupied this spot from the 9th century until the earthquake of 1884. Now it is a pedestrian friendly view terrace. And what a view it is. You can see miles of the Mediterranean Sea coastline and many little coves and caves below. The tide change here is minimal--only a two feet change during a 24 hour period. On the Balcony there is a cute statue of King Alfonso XII. This commemorates when he came to Nerja after the devastating earthquake and mobilized the locals to put the community back together. Standing on this spot amid the ruins he marveled at the view and gave it its name Balcony ... read more

We went to Nerja for the day on Saturday with our program, which is this gorgeous beach about an hour and twenty minutes away. First things first, one of my legs got FRIED because when we got there it was cloudy, and then I fell asleep on my towel and woke up because I was hot and it was uncloudy. I must have been distracted when putting sunscreen on because I missed the back of my right leg entirely. At least I didn’t discover this great sunburn until the bus ride home, so it’s not like it ruined my afternoon. The water was FREEZING, but kind of refreshing at the same time. There were a lot of jelly fish so we had to be careful, but with water that clear you can see everything. One of ... read more

This morning, we left the mountains of Zahara de la Sierra and headed south to the Costa del Sol, or the sun coast. We were headed to Nerja, a tourist destination on the Mediterranean famous for its beaches... but even more famous for its caves. Exiting the highway and heading into town, I studied the driving directions I had printed off Google Maps, still naively hopeful that they might actually get us to the hotel without incident. Driving in Spain, Lesson #2: You know how Colorado Springs has Cheyenne Road and Cheyenne Blvd? Spain does that, too. I had finally learned how to locate street signs, and was overjoyed when I saw the sign for our street, Calle Gomez. The roads were, of course, ridiculously narrow and jammed with cars that were half in the road ... read more
