Hello everyone! Hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving. Our week has been busy with celebrations, but we saved the best for last. Yesterday Sage and I threw a dinner party for 7, finally giving us reason to use the gi-normous dining room table. I hesitate to refer to our dinner as a celebration of "Turkey Day" because there was no turkey present. (Spanish turkeys must be made of gold or some other precious metal to merit the 30 euro/kilo price.) But...with a few subsitutions here and there, we managed a pretty traditional eat-until-you-might-explode American feast. Desperate to impress our guests with the typical Thanksgiving foods, Sage and I slaved away making pumpkin tarts (no room for pies in our makeshift oven), green bean casserole (fried the onions by hand), corn and oyster casserole (with clams ... read more

The train pulled into the station in Málaga around 4. The sky was overcast, and it started sprinkling rain as I walked out of the station. I was really beginning to wonder why Andalucía has such a reputation for sunshine with all this crappy weather. I dodged the rain under overhangs as I followed the signs towards the center to track down a map. As I walked, I was struck by how modern the city is. There is an historic center, but the area around the main station is quite new, full of high-rise apartment blocks. It's also a large city, with more than 500,000 inhabitants, which surprised me since I had never heard of it before coming to Spain. The signs were easy enough to follow, and I got a map without too much trouble. ... read more

Hello loved ones! Hope you all enjoyed Halloween. For days we've been preparing ourselves to celebrate a non-holiday in Spain, but much to our surprise Halloween is definitely catching on in Andalusia. As part of my job is to impart cultural tidbits from the US, Jason (the other American at my school) and I decided to don some traditional Halloween costumes and show the students how it's done. We tried to stick with ordinary ideas, a witch and a knight, because although young people here know of Halloween, they couldn't seem to understand that costumes don't have to be scary or of famous people. Everyone loved it. We got out of teaching our classes so we could walk from one classroom to the next explaining the history of Halloween and trick-or-treating. The school photographer followed us ... read more

So Travelblog.org now has a route map feature, so I'm going to try it out. If you click on the little map icon to the side here. It'll take you to our map that shows our trip in total thus far. It says we've travelled around 11,000 miles so far; not including sides trips in England. It should be fun to see how long it is at the end of the trip. If you switch the view to Satellite, rather than the cartoonish map you'll be able to zoom in and see the house we're staying at in Mezquetilla. I've put the marker directly onto the house. There's some photos as well. Enjoy! Jason PS- I'm working on uploading a video too...so stay tuned!... read more

Wow...when I told you all that life in Spain is a bit more laid back, I had no idea to what extent that is true. I thought, surely when they say I'll be working 12 hours a week, they really mean I'll be in the classroom for 12 hours and then I'll have other informal job assignments. Nope. In fact, I looked like a total fool yesterday when I asked if a there was a refrigerator to put my lunch in. I couldn't figure out why they looked so puzzled when I asked, but eventually I realized that I get off work at 1:50 at the latest, so I won't even need to bring lunch. I'll be home long before the 3 o'clock dining hour!! Let me create a little analogy for you all regarding the ... read more

Hey everyone, Well these last few days has been a vacation from our vacation. Sunny weather, laying out on the beach, watching some movies and relaxing has been Margie and I´s last few days and its been WONDERFUL! My aunt Carmel´s sister, Kate, lives in Malaga with her husband and three children so she was kind enough to let us stay with her for a few days. She lives about 15 minutes outside of Malaga in a town called Benalmadena Costa. It´s really nice staying here because she is only a 10 minute walk from the sea which makes it great. Since being here we have gone to the beach a couple times to lay out and get some sun (I only got a little but little is better than none), went into downtown Malaga and ... read more

Yipee!! Yahoo!!! It looks like we won't have to be homeless after all. :) On our third day in this fine city of Málaga we have found ourselves our dream apartment. It’s a 10-minute walk from the school where I’ll be teaching, 10-minute walk from the beach and a 20-minute bus ride to the city center. And for all you New Yorkers, here’s the real estate rundown: 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a big kitchen that is separate from the dining room that is separate from the living room (remember when those 3 rooms were separate places?), a terrace, TONS of closets and drawers and cabinets for storage and an elevator. Now what does all that mumbo-jumbo really amount to? Well, Sage is happy. I’m happy. And we have enough space that you can all come visit ... read more

Call me a bad person, but I really enjoyed my first live bullfight. AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DO NOT AGREE WITH IT, YOU MAY NOT WANT TO READ THIS ENTRY! : ) Since I saw a Torero(aka matador), on TV in Canada, get down on one knee and rìp open his jacket in front of a snorting bull, whom he had just faught, I have been intrigued by this very traditional and complicated, sport. Amongst all the Señoras with flowers in there hair, long ruffled skirts, and plastic jewllery, Señors with large cigars, straw hats and very serious looks on their faces was little, Canadian, me. And I couldn´t have been happier! Everything surrounding and including the event screemed honour, tradition, and passion. Our seats were in the sun(cheap), and in the middle section ... read more

Malaga: Birthplace of Picasso and Antonio Banderas, and summer play-place of Enrique Iglesias. So far, so good. I arrived at the Malaga airport 3 days ago, where Juan Antonio picked me up. He is very calm and completely opposite to me! Makes things interesting, but we are getting along well. We took the tram back to the flat that I am now staying in, and he showed me around. The flat is very nice, and his family is very warm. I feel safe, and totally freakin´scared all at the same time! The way that people speak here has an accent and speed that I have never experienced before! 5 words a day-that is my goal. From what I have seen, Malaga seems like a nice place to live- the sea is calm and warm, and the ... read more

Greetings, My adventuring is nowhere near as accomplished as most of the people who blog here, but I thought I'd warm myself up as I have big plans for the future. However to start off I thought I would recount a holiday of mine last year with my girlfriend at the time. We flew into Malaga on an early morning flight, both fairly skint so we didn't have the luxury of a daytime flight. We got a taxi to a relative of hers that was going to put us up in his pool house... again, we didn't really have the money for a posh hotel... or a rubbish one for that matter. The first day was pretty hot, it hit me like a ton of bricks and it took a while to shake the lethargy off ... read more
