Mauro picked us up this morning about 7:30 and we drove closer to Udine where we met up with his wife Sandra. Here we distribute ourselves between the two cars and drove closer to Trieste, taking a series of smaller roads up the hills above the city to a very modern church which looks out over the ocean and the city. After a few minutes taking in this view, we got back in the cars and drove to the border with Slovenia. As Slovenia is also part of the European Union, there is no stop at the border ( much to Joshua's dismay) and we drove right through adding one more country to our year's tally. In Slovenia, we drove through the countryside until we reached what looked to be a conservation area. After a short ... read more

(Excerpted from my book OUR SUMMER IN SLOVENIA. AMAZON.COM) Big Ben is England, the Eiffel Tower is France, the Statue of Liberty is the United States, and so on for other countries. What about Slovenia? It is the Kazolec, Slovenia's unique hayrack. Seen everywhere Slovenian hayracks, Kazolecs, were taken for granted as a necessary part of farming life that occupied most of the country until recent years. It was only when artists began to paint pictures of them, that today they are seen as a national icon. They come in several varieties: single or double stacked, with or without small roofs, all wood or later versions of concrete pillars and wood slats. Some are hung with hay, others with hay and corn. They were developed over time and out of necessity. The damp Alpine regions are ... read more

Ive been traveling around Europe for the past month. Currently in small European country, Slovenia. Slovenia is absolutely beautiful, there is no such a word that can describe this country. I'm planning to stay here 2 weeks. Ive been already to their coast and loved it. Portoroz is very nice city. Ive visited Postojnska Jama.......it is a cave......absolutely beautiful. I am looking forward visiting more places that I heard about. There are so many things to do, so many things to see.....and for those who love shopping this is the place! Food is very nice and everything is done in a proper, professional and tasty way:(). Anyway, would recommend everyone to visit this country. My next destination is Greece. Very excited. I arrived to Athens, Greece yesterday, a bit earlier that I planned. But I met ... read more

I spent the morning trying to figure out how to trick someone in the office, but after all I became the victim. Pugy: The kitchen is not open today so there'll be no lunch. It's closed because of the rain. Mari: Oh, Ok... (I didn't even question how the rain could cause the kitchen to close!) ten minutes later (or was it before??) Mari: Pugy, did you trick someone yet? Pugy: Oh... Right, it's april 1st today... No, I didn't! Blah, I am always too late!! But we did eat lunch after all ;-)... read more

It seems like the weather is getting a bit lighter now - both outside and in my head. I am really not used to this much rain, fog and heavy clouds and I do feel that it affects my mood in many ways. It is a big plus that my cimra normally sleeps longer than me, because I don't think she would stand me in the mornings. It is also beneficial to have nice and cheerful people at the office and a coffee machine downstairs. I was really grumpy and tired when I got to work earlier this morning, but thanks to Pugy it lightened up :-) We had a long and useful discussion (read: conversation!) about previous and upcoming stuff. Reflections and planning, and I just filled in my self-made calendar :D The last days ... read more

www.justgiving.com/3marathonchallenge Slovenia was to be country number 5 in 11 days. We made a beeline for it's pretty and historical capital of Ljubljana. Having previously been here on holiday about 4 years ago, it was my turn to lead the tour. Ahem, that is just as soon as we got our bearings, parked up, continued on foot and found a hostel. The hostel was in a prime location overlooking the river Ljubljanica and the fella that checked us in resembled a slightly overweight Tom Hanks. Whilst I realise there is absolutely no connection between those two points, I thought they were worth mentioning.....I don't want you thinking I'm holding out on the good stuff! We went for a bit of a walkabout and even though it was wet (of course it was....we were travelling Europe with ... read more

Today i realized that I have chosen quite a risky way to the office; I get off the bus at Hotel Lev. From there I pass the brewery and hit the gas station (I think it's a Hip Hop). This is a nice walk - the only harmful thing that can happen is that I get pooped on by some pigeon (or get hit by a car if I'm uncautious enough!) After I pass the gas station, I get to the four railway lanes and this is where it gets risky. I will not say that I almost got hit today, as that would be well exaggerated, but there was a train on its way to the station that I DID NOT take notice of before I had already crossed. That kinda made my thoughts wander... ... read more
