Ljubljana Slovenia 15 to 17 July 2013 As soon as we crossed into Slovenia (an EU country) we could see we were in for a treat regarding scenery. The border was a ‘drive-straight-through’ and buy a vignette for the car. This is instead of paying tolls. Slovenia is only 20,000 sq km and 85% of it is covered with vegetation, with 2 million people. It is also a very mountainous country and it hasn’t been subjected to major wars. So all in all we knew we were in for a treat. The country only has 45 kms coast line between Croatia and Italy, but it’s a beautiful part of the country. We drove through it from Croatia on our way to Trieste. Our 1st stop after travelling over excellent roads was Ljubljana with 280,000 people of ... read more

Suzy is parked up for the night in the Ljubljana resort site just three miles out of town. An interesting night - gunshots or at least they sounded like gunshots, ambulance or police sirens - it was hard to tell what they were and finally the bells ringing out the hours from the cities churches. A bit of a change from last nights cuckoos and woodpeckers. The site has filled up with quite a number of solo motorbikers and strange combinations of three people to a tent. Two lads and one girl. We wonder what the arrangement must be. It turned out another lovely hot day with the sun beating down upon us. We headed off after breakfast for the bus which left from the small pull in opposite the camp site. We had paid up ... read more

We woke early again to the woodpeckers and the cuckoos. Suzy was unhooked and our goodbyes were said to Lake Bled. It has been a good site and the weather had picked up so all is well with the world. Our plan for today is to travel from Lake Bled to our stop for the night at the Ljubljana Resort site just about 3 miles out of the town. There is a good bus service so hopefully we will be able to get into the city and do some sightseeing. The journey was relatively a short one just over an hour. We left our leaving until quite late and paid up for our two nights stay. And waved goodbye to our Polish neighbours. We never did find out where they were heading to. The roads were ... read more

Laskeuduttiin satumaahan. Lieköhän koskaan ollut jo koneen ikkunasta sellaiset maisemat, että tekee mieli hypätä suoraan polulle. Maa on aivan uskomattoman vihreä! Lentokentän vieressä kohosi lumihuippuiset vuoret, ilma muutenkin jo hyvin pitkälle edenneen keväinen (eilen illalla asteita +15, tänään +20). Illalla lentokentältä Ljubljanan keskustaan matkasimme halvimmalla vaihtoehdolla, eli bussilla (4.10 €). Saumatonta yhteistyötä teimme majapaikkojamme etsiessä, Tarja näki lukea kaukaa kadunnimet ja minä läheltä karttaa. Yllätykseksi huomasimme varanneemme kumpikin majoituksen samalta kadulta, lähestulkoon toistemme vierestä! Olen nyt toista iltaa kymmenen hengen sekadormissa. Mukavia ihmisiä täällä. Kielimuuria on moukaroitu oikein urakalla, eiköhän se ala tästä taas harjoituksen myötä murtua. Ljubljana on nätti pieni pääkaupunki, asukkaita vain noin 310 000. Kaupunkia on runnell... read more

It was an early start to our Wintery Christmas get away. By 5.30am we were zipping along the quiet London streets towards Stanstead. Remind me never to go to Standstead again, such chaos, and as we found out on the way home £22.50 each to return back to London. But this was the only way to get to Solvenia. We were travelling with Adam, Myles, Tony and Craig. A team that required a large people mover to get us around. Scott was on point driving and I managed to squeeze into the fold out seat in the back with all the luggage. Our hotel for the first night was in the heart of Ljubljana. The city only has a population of ~250k, so it had a lovely relaxed feel. It was very Chritmassy with lovely lights ... read more

Day 5 - Ljubljana to Vienna via Maribor We set off at a reasonable time this morning as checkout is at 10am. Ive got one of my first good nights sleep since we left ibiza so i'm feeling refreshed and ready to go. Thankfully charlie doesn't reek too much of stale milk, but we give him a wee spray of febreze anyway. We arrive in Maribor early lunchtime and its a lovely little town in the north of slovenia. In the centre of town there's a pretty square with a museum on one side and a church with a tall tower you can climb up on the other side. We opt to go up the tower but first check how much it costs as we are on a budget after all. Gregs is delighted when the ... read more

Day 4 - Treviso to Ljubljana We get a great nights sleep in our comfy big bed with no outside noise at all. We say goodbye to the staff and head off to our next stop- Slovenia. This could be interesting if the road signs are all in Slovenian as the last time I checked, I dint speak Slovenian, and I don't really think our Spanish will help us on this one either. Things start off well enough, but soon turn sour, in more ways than one (you'll understand shortly). As we cross the border into Slovenia, the traffic grinds to a complete stop. There doesn't seem to be any explanation and we can't see anything up ahead. We stay like this for about 10 minutes before inching forward slowly. In another 20 minutes we've moved ... read more

Stock eines Hochhauses, wo ... read more

We had drizzly rain in Ljubljana so we decided to head out of town to Bled. Bled is a very beautiful lakeside town. There is a church on an island in the middle of the lake and a small castle set on a cliff high above the lake. When we arrived in the town the rain eased so we had a walk on the lake edge. We then drove up the hill to view the castle but it was raining 'cats and dogs' so we retreated to town for hot drinks. Eileen’s saga of hot chocolate drinks continued. This time we had a problem we had never struck before – the drink was toooo chocolatey! That’s right, it was melted chocolate in a cup and you needed a spoon to eat it! My coffee was ordinary. ... read more

July 18th: Got ticket booked to Zagreb, though it was a mission! The ticket area had 3 windows open and they all had very old people in front of them... who STAYED in front of them... eventually one kind old chap stood aside and let me through so that I could buy my ticket and leave, and he could get back to talking to the person at the ticket window. I asked what times the train runs (it's an open ticket, I can use it on any of the Ljubljana-Zagreb services) the ticket lady pointed and said "information" so I dutifully wandered through to the "I" stand, they shook thier heads, pointed and said "train information" what a very compartmentalised station! I've got a full day of Ljubljana ahead so I went with the lazy option ... read more
