Greetings from Slovenia! We have just spent four days here: two in Ljubljana and two in Bled. We arrived in Ljubljana in the early evening after our time in Villach and found our hostel without incident. The hostel was really cute, with only 14 beds and a very intimate, friendly feel. It was already dark, but we decided to wander down to the river and see what there was to see. It turns out the river is the place to be in the early evening, because the restaurants lining it all lit up their patios with candles and they were all packed with locals. We crossed the landmark Triple Bridge and found a cute cafe for a glass of wine/beer. The next morning we got up early and walked back to the bridge to get some ... read more

waking easliy for a change i started the day lazily at 9am..time to get off my arse to do a day trip i thought..so Bled it was. It is surprisingly close to Ljubljana where im based, only 1hr 20mins includeing the traffic we hit downtown. the first thing that hit me was the temperature. it was bloody freezing! i had a polafleece shirt, a jacket, scalf and beanie on and yet i was really contimplating jumping straight back on that bus and heading back to civilisation namely a hot cappucino by the river in Ljubljana, which was cloked in sunshine when i left. no such luck in Bled, there was low cloud obscuring the mountains that apparenly form an amazing backdrop to Bled Lake. that was after all the main reason i had decided to head ... read more

14th october Mum and Dad had organised a day where we could hire good bikes and helmets so we could go mountain biking. The only bad thing was all the down hill had age limits of 14years so me and mason couldn't go on hem (Mum said it was a good thing). At 10 o'clock we got the cable car up to the top of the hill where the trails were. Dad walked up because he wanted to save money, he said he wanted the challange and Mum said he wanted a break from us. Up the top we got our bikes, well i did anyway, Masons came up on the cable car because he was to small for the ones on the top. My bikewas a GT avalanche, massive suspension and good brakes. mason and ... read more

Travelled through Slovenia on our way to see Hayley in Vienna where we are now. We only had time to stay in Bled and Ljubljana. Bled is very beautiful and we had a wonderful stay in Pension Berc. We managed to hike and bike which I enjoyed. Definitely a place to revisit. Ljubljana reminded us of Prague, a smaller version of course. It was a shame that the weather has turned much cooler as I am sure the outdoor cafes would have been buzzing a few weeks earlier. We did manage to enjoy the company of a couple of swans. ... read more

Day 16 (Saturday, September 20th, 2008) After checking out of our hotel in Ljubljana this morning, we quickly walked a few blocks east in order to reach the car rental office where we picked-up our rental car. Somehow, although I had reserved the cheapest option possible through Gemut Auto Rental, we ended up with a small white Mercedes, which was a pleasant surprise! We have rented cars several times during previous trips to Europe. Each time, even though we always had directions printed out, we would inevitably become lost. To help prevent this from occurring again, Mike purchased a GPS system before we left on the trip so that we would have a much less stressful driving experience. Once he turned on the GPS system, it worked flawlessly, each time bringing us to the correct destination ... read more

Bled / Vintgar Gorge Friday 8th February 2008 A sight for sore eyes is Lake Bled. 50 minutes by train from Ljubljana, in Slovenia’s north west, a blue, sprawling lake sits in tranquillity beneath the Julian Alps. Bled Castle sits high above the lake providing a platform for photographers, travellers, and locals alike. In the centre of the lake sits Bled Island, hosting the fantastically romantic Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary. After a wander next to the lake we made our way up to Vintgar, where the river Radovna flows through a vast four kilometer gorge. The crystal clear water is drinkable and thoroughly enjoyable after a long trip through the gorge. John found it necessary to hang precariously over the edge of the gorge at every opportunity to take ‘unique shots’. After navigating ... read more

Last year on our trip to Croatia we stopped at Lake Bled in northern Slovenia - literally as an after thought. We only spent a few hours there, but it definitely left an impression as one of the most beautiful places we'd seen in Europe. So we went back with Rick for a long weekend, and a chance to explore more of Bled's surroundings. We didn't have the sunny weather from last time, but still, how's the serenity?... read more

We left from the Rome Termini on Sat the 26th, around 5pm ( after arriving there at 10am but having to wait in three different lines to get our tickets). We had to switch trains twice, once in Bologna, and once in Vallach. On one of the trains we started talking this Italian guy who is studying to be a stage actor in Venice. He was very sweet, and friendly and we talked for a long time about various random things. Our conversation was conducted half in English and half in Spanish, it was quite fun. He got off in Venice to see his girlfriend who was performing in a play there. It is so pleasant to meet all these nice people!! He was the only high point on the train ride. It was so hot, ... read more

took bus from ljublinana, tried to find hostel spent as long as possible trying to find the hostel in a really small town with a total of about 10 hostels and 100 houses. hostel is plush and solvenian staff are strangely sarcastic.. a reminder of home In the dorm of 8ish there were a group of university, sloan type rah girls, who stayed up late into the night contiously explaning the rules of trumps to one member, unsurprisingly we met up with another lone traveller in the dorm, who empathised with our pain. We had a drink at the "George Best bar," down the road from our hostel, admiring the beautiful decor of George best frescos, football shirt, rugby shirts and photos of Mohamed ali, in short anything remotely connected with England or USA in fact ... read more

Slovenians suffer from a debilitating swine obsession. Every meal is laced with suspicious mushroom-pink luncheon meat. Pigs trottors, snouts & floor sweepings fashioned into a giant sausage & polished to a reflective sheen. Absolutely disgusting! We've resorted to feasting on imported South Australian canned tuna, corn chips & nutella instead. Us in Sovenia = the picture of health. On the flip side our budget is finally wearing a smile. So too are our heads as we marvel at the spine tingling scenery of the Julian Alps. We've never seen so many Christmas trees in the one place. Not to mention countless hidden gorges of aquamarine waterfalls & teal pools where stray shafts of sun catch frollicking fish in their spotlights. We climbed to the Vršic pass along the Russian Road from Kranjška Gora, Slovenia's highest mountain ... read more
