It was a matter of confidence till Saturday 13th December 2008 when I packed the camera and started exploring “Bratislava”. Left the hotel around 08:45 am and took the route from where the last night taxi driver brought us to the hotel. It’s the shortest route to reach to city center. City center is the old charm of Bratislava with Churches, old style houses, food corners and offcourse tram paths. I was right on the track when my mischievous mind saw the hills on the right and guess what? - Hills were calling me as they do always. In the beginning they seemed to be around 10-20 kms away from the city but who’s going to worry about the kilometers. For my soul, their calls are more important then thoughts. I rushed towards them. I halted ... read more

I've been moving from south Poland to Slovakia to Lviv,Ukraine(here now). I haven't had access to computer long enough to upload photos,so will try to catch up tonight. Tricky using Ukrainian computers in Internet cafe, but someone in hostel had faster computer so I could download pics from camera to flashdrive. I'll describe places from last four days. One of the neat things about Europe is that you can cross most borders easily and enter a new country for the afternoon. Friends from Gorlice took me for a drive into Slovakia on Saturday afternoon. We went to Bardejov (not on this website). I'm uploading photos blind, (can't see them when I choose photos so if things are not jiving, gowith the flow). I was surprised that the main square in Bardejov was empty for a ... read more

Sun 12th Oct Vienna - Slovakia - Hungry Sunday was a mad driving day because we went through 3 countries!!! In the morning, exhausted from lack of sleep we left Vienna and headed to the capital city of Slovakia - Bratislava. It turned out to the biggest surprise. The outer suburbs’ were exactly what I’d imagine, slightly dirty and run down but the city centre was a lovely surprise. The architecture was so similar to that of Vienna but on a smaller scale and less touristy. While saying that, there were heaps of tourists!! Bratislava had lots of little street and cute restaurants but we were surprised at how expensive it was. There were quirky bronze statues casually placed around the town. We found The Watcher, the Frenchmen and the Photographer. Each were found somewhere around ... read more

Our two-day whirlwind tour of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, was a success. Due to our usual dodgy planning, we showed up without a hostel booked and had a chance to see the sights with our packs on as we walked to every hostel in town. We did eventually find a nice little place and just relaxed for the night. We were looking for something to do on day 2 when we heard that the local hockey team was playing that night. Two Canadians go all the way across the world to experience new cultures and the best thing they can come up with is a hockey game? This was definately a Slovakian experience though. They love their hockey here NEARLY as much as we do back home. It was about $8 CAD for corner seats ... read more

Bratislava, 17-11-2007. With these lads from Down Under gone it looks like I will have the dorm all to myself tonight. Tomorrow will be leaving time for me, Budapest will be my next goal! After my McDonalds breakfast in the old town i finally walked up to the castle. Built on a hill, the castle - if you can call it that - dominates the city with breath taking views in all directions. Unlike my aussie friends who returned to the dorm each night well after three o'clock in the morning, I have not done much bar crawling but that does not disturb me much. Maybe I will visit some bars in Budapest. ... read more
