THROUGH SLOVAKIA TO POLAND On Wednesday, August 6th, we left early from Budapest for Poland. We had asked our tour company, Ayelet Tours, to put on a stop in Slovakia at the Museum in Banska Bystrica instead of driving straight through to Krakow. This museum is dedicated to the Slovakian Uprising against the Nazis, an uprising led from this small city near the Tatras Mountains. The small museum is inspiring and so well done. The man who took us through, one of the researchers or program people from the museum, was so dedicated to its mission. It showed the pride of the Slovak people in their nation and in their resistance. We highly recommend it. We were also impressed that this is the Museum that created the traveling cattle cars educational exhibit a few years ago. ... read more

Alright, so it's been crazy since my last post from Berlin. I can't believe it's only been a week since I left Berlin to go to Prague, and have since been to Krakow, Auschwitz, and now I' in Bratislava. I don't know how far around the world news has made it of the train crash in the Czech Republic, but for those of you who haven't heard, a bridge collapsed on a train yesterday in the Czech Republic, killing 7 people and injuring 70 (according to the BBC). For us, however, this was not just any train, but the train that we were on one day later - from Krakow en route to Bratislava via the Czech Republic. The train that left Krakow yesterday morning at 7am, just as we did this morning from Krakow at ... read more

EN: On Friday I went to Bratislava to collect our visa. All went smoothly, they were issued to us. I had some other things to do there, do some shopping, unlock a mobile phone etc. .... so I strolled a lot through the streets. You meet lot of people, some guy asking for some change (for food, of course !), then some smartly dressed young lads, who wanted to talk to me about Jesus (and next step would be they saying that they are the one and only group that follows the right path ). It was very hot day, and very humid. I needed a pint. I had one in Slovak pub restaurant. Zlaty bazant 12 beer. For 43 SKK/1.40 Euro. Jesus, 3 years ago when I was leaving Bratislava the same would be, at ... read more

EN: We spent some nice time with our friends in beautiful Orava and Liptov region. First 3 days near Oravsky Podzamok. The main acitivities were drinking, chatting, cooking goulash, barbecue etc :) But we also visited the castle in the village. Check the photos. Movie: "Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens" has been filmed there (classic from 1922 !!). This castle is also the second most visited castle in Slovakia (after Bojnice castle). After those 3 days some of us set off for a hiking through mountains to Liptov region. We hiked through beautiful Kvacianska dolina (Kvacianska valley). There we took a bath/shower in one of the waterfalls (and as it was in the evening, with no people around, guess what swimsuit we had on :P ... sorry, no pics here. Just the waterfall ) We spent ... read more

After realising that Bratislava was only an hour from Vienna on the train, it became obvious that being so close to another country without visiting was something that I would seriously regret once this holiday was over. And so it was that we found our time in Vienna to be shortened by a brief trip over the border into Slovakia :o) We had originally decided that we were going to get the 8:30am train into Bratislava from the Sudbahnhof but on waking up, it was quickly clear that we were in a lazy mood, and so we decided to have an extra hour in bed instead. We were up for breakfast in the hotel at 7:30 (which was the usual continental buffet, but very yummy!) and then we used the free Metro passes provided by the ... read more

Today Sylvia, her cousin Marian, and I went to Detva for one of the best known and largest Slovak folk festivals. Think of it as Czech Days in Wilber, NE, but with some authenticity. The festival features authentic Slovak crafts, music, and folk performances. It is encouraging to see that these traditions are being valued once again and that younger people are willing to learn them, especially since many of the folk skills would be lost forever if not passed on. It was also encouraging to see there is a growing audience for such demonstrations because it will ensure that such activities continue. We spent the afternoon walking around the festival and watching many of the small demonstrations of folk art and music. We watched a group of youth musicians playing fiddles and one of my ... read more

EN: So we are back from Slovakia since 3rd of July. Since then we did not have enough time to relax. There were lots of things to do, arrange, some paperwork, go to bank, meet friends, families - all this in different places. I had a nice experience explaining in my bank that I need 4 digit code that was sent by PayPal to my newly created Slovak PayPal account (to confirm my registered Debit card and thus verify my account). In the first branch I visited the lady had to call some guy. I had to interrupt the guy when he started with: "PayPal is an online....." :D Now there were 2 to whom I had to explain what I need. Surprisingly, they did not see the 4 digit code I needed with the transaction ... read more

Our final Danube city after another four hour hydro-foil ride was Bratislava. After Vienna and Budapest it had a distinctly 'after the Lord-Mayor's show' feel about it....but once we got under the skin of the place it certainly had character. No where on this trip was the old soviet era more evident in the concrete tower blocks and factory chimneys, although the Historic Centre has had a bundle of EEC money spent on it, and is charming. ... read more
