Prior to our arrival PP attended his second Russian language session and returned to the cabin lucid in Russian conversation. Well perhaps not entirely, but his efforts to learn the Cyrillic alphabet before we left and his further boning up since we arrived in Russia meant that he developed a credible skill in interpreting printed material that looked like cooked spaghetti to CS. He became surprisingly adept at reading the words, and because Russian is apparently quite phonetic, ultimately managed to interpret quite a few as well. CS was off the hook trying to decipher street signs, for example, phew! We arrived at Kizhi at 3pm precisely. The programme so far (and throughout) was followed with military precision and explained at each stage, delightfully and clearly in English and German, by the ever competent and entertaining ... read more

Tuesday May 21. The vessel set off about 2.30pm and sailed the Moscow Canal to Uglich. Our path was roughly northwards and we went through 6 locks on the way. These are much larger and deeper than the ones we experienced on the barge trip. They were reminiscent of the ones our freighter had to negotiate in Hamburg. The ship is amazingly stable, quiet and smooth when we are underway, almost no sense of movement at all unless one looks out the window, yet we travel at a surprisingly fast rate. On Wednesday we arrived at Uglich at 2pm. Shore parties set off to walk to the Kremlin, through town and turn right. CS and PP were a little surprised to see how run-down many of the town buildings were - particularly the houses, it seemed ... read more

Suzdal is a chocolate-box town, known as the "Jewel in the Crown" of the Golden Ring. Every building is pretty and different to the ones around it, and although Suzdal is famed for its churches, the real pleasure is just in walking around the town and taking in the sleepy atmosphere. Arriving on a quiet, sunny morning was unreal, and I felt like we were in a model village. The highlights of my day were both musical, and both in the St Euthimius Monastery. Firstly the hourly chiming of the bells, playing a chaotic, lively dance tune over a steady droning beat. Overall it reminded me of Hitchcock soundtracks, which was eerie in the quiet, deserted monastery grounds. Later we were looking around the church, the only people there apart from one couple, when three monks, ... read more

The day started dramatically, with startled shouting leading us to look outside our hotel window to see an old woman had fallen out of a bus directly below us and hit the back of her head on the pavement. A concerned crowd of passengers stopped to see her to her feet and she walked away, but the bus driver just drove off - health and safety is not really a thing in Russia. The rest of the day was much more relaxed, as we pottered around the sights of Vladimir, the primary one being its Assumption Cathedral and the view behind it over the Oka valley. Vladimir is bigger and livelier than Suzdal - being the weekend, the streets were rowdy last night and there were many Russian visitors to the sights today -and although less ... read more

Moved on to Vladimir today. Although the journey was only 3 hours, and was in the middle of the day, we are now officially on the Trans-Siberian route, so were in a sleeper car (3rd class, since we were only sitting). Even during the day on the Trans-Siberian there are many people lying around on their beds, and we were issued with bunks and bedsheets, even though we had no intention of using them. And, of course, the radio is playing (music and, apparently, comedy programmes) and many sales people are passing through the train, selling food and souvenirs. Excited for the forthcoming longer journeys! The Winter Olympics are coming to Sochi next year, and Russia is excited. The official kit is prominently displayed in shop windows in GUM, and it is not uncommon to see ... read more

The weather in Irkutsk had steadily deteriorated over the weekend, becoming colder with the snow falling constantly. The homestay was gradually getting warmer and more uncomfortable as unregulated hot water flowed into the radiators, the only way to cool the room was to open the window. The final breakfast a vast improvement on the others, perhaps because two new guests from Switzerland had arrived. Pancakes, cheeses, ham, jams and real butter, Olga really had pulled the stops out for my final morning. Sad to move on I said my goodbyes and arrived at a cold station platform where I met the Aussie sisters, we boarded the 8pm train to Moscow, the start of our epic four night journey to the capital city. The first night was uncomfortable and incredibly hot in the cabin. The train rattled ... read more

At 13:00 the ferry from Turkey carrying our Australian & Kiwi travel companions plus their 13 motorbikes comes into view over the horizon. However its seems there is only one berth in Sochi and its currently occupied by a large cruise ship so they have to carry on bobbling about on the Caspian Sea for another 5 hours before they can set foot in Russia. Having been re-united with the group we start to head north towards Moscow. First we wind our way along the Black Sea coast – its looks very Mediterranean under clear blue skies with 30+C heat. Its a bank holiday weekend so there are lots of Russians enjoying themselves at the beach which leaves the roads empty for us to enjoy. Just in case you get bored of looking at the sea ... read more
