I don't know exactly why, but today I decided to start my own travel blog. Maybe it’s because my everyday more recurrent memory lapses made me think that I should put all my travels in written, somewhere, or maybe it’s just because I’m bored. Anyway, here goes nothing!! By the way… I’m not really sure I want to make this in English… well, we'll go along and see, so… sorry all you non-Portuguese speakers out there for all the Portuguese entries in the future. If you feel like asking for some translation… don’t be shy. _Dune ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the fourth of six posts I'll do about a trip to the Canary Islands, Morocco and Madeira in 2004 together with my parents and my uncle Anders. The last post covered the time I was down with the winter flu while this one covers my shortest ever visit to a place. As we docked in Funchal, after spending a full day at sea, I was still pretty much out of commission. The worst had passed but I was on a very definite fluid diet ordered back to the cabin. The rest of my family wanted to go ashore and I said no worries, just go and enjoy, I'll be here drinking Pepsi, eating soup and reading a book. Trying to regain some strength. My mother was concerned of course, as ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the third of six posts about a trip to the Canary Islands, Morocco and Madeira in 2004 together with my parents and my Uncle Anders. The last post covered my time in Morocco and this post covers the time I spent down with the winter flu. This was probably the worst day of the trip for me. I was completely knocked out by the flu and totally bedridden (or in reality bathroom ridden) for the whole day. May day pretty much all consisted of vomiting and forcing down some creamy soups and Pepsi, which was the only combination of food and drink I could manage to get down. Fortunately they delivered everything to my room promptly. I was also given a antibiotics cure by the boat physician. This was something ... read more

Over one fall break, I took some time off in Portugal, where I visited Coimbra, Porto, and other cities. Judging by the three criteria mentioned in my profile, this country, in general, fulfills only one of them. The scenery of Portugal is very beautiful; the rustic old forts and cities remind me of the medevial times of Europe, when castles served many purposes. Driving along in a shitty Opel, we went from place to place, seeing mostly castles and ruins. Of particular interest was the ruins of the Moors, who conquered that area a long time ago. We stayed at the king's former hunting lodge, a magnificent castle built on hundreds of well kept acres, with gardens and waterfalls. The most disappointing part of the trip was the food - although on the coast, we could ... read more

Lagos, as I discovered Sunday, is a dreadful tourist-trap. The restaurants are chocked with elderly Brits and Germans and the shops are filled with touristy kitsch. It´s the kind of place I was actually embaressed to be walking around in. The beaches were nice, but the weather was overcast the whole time. At night it was a different story. I went out well after midnight on Saturday and Sunday with different groups of Aussis and Kiwis and even a couple locals and had a wonderful time both nights. Yesterday I woke up to drizzling rain (the first in 6 months in the region I´m told) and decided to leave. I took the travin here to Tavira, a nice little fishing town further east down the coast. I had read about a campsite on a island off ... read more

I´m in Lagos, a beach town in the Algarve. I just got here at 9 pm so I haven´t had a chance to explore yet, but supposedly it has Portugal´s finest beaches. Yesterday I did a day-trip with a Dutchman and a Frenchman to Sintra, a wonderful 18th century town with a hilltop pine-forest setting. We toured a bazaar palace that looked more like something from Disneyland than something that someone would actualy live in. The highlight was undoubtedly the handcarved wooden toilet in the royal bathroom. Later that night, in Lisbon, I went out with a whole group of Europeans and Canadians and a had a wild time drinking and dancing. My first big night out was a big success, and the Portuguese beer is tasty and cheap. I was also fortunate enough to be ... read more

So I´m in Lisbon and I could not be happier. The plane ride was easy enough and I was fortunate to see one of those wonderful fast-forward sunrises one only experiences while traveling directly East at 600 mph. Approaching Lisbon, we flew right over the south-westernly most tip of Europe and I was able to pick out each city along the coast until we got to Lisbon itself. The best part, however, was the bus ride from the airport. I unintentionaly sat next to two French girls, Elodie and Marie-Laure, having never really talked to a French girl, I was delighted to find it very easy to strike up a conversation immediately. By the time we reached the hostel, we were friends... and.... get ready... Maurie-Laure said I spoke excellent French. This may seem trivial, but ... read more

Santiago de Compostela (Day 4-5) Camino Portugues from Rubiaes - Tuy - Redondela (50km) Day 4 Rubiaes - Tuy (20km) We walked down to the town by 0600 where the lady from the restaurant promised to be opened for us to sell us some breakfast of coffees and toast. The kitten was left all alone and since it followed us when she was alone I did not like the thought of her getting run over if she tried to follow us on the busy road. So I wrapped her up in a coat and carried her to the outside of the restaurant, letting her loose before the others noticed that I had brought her. We headed off following the yellow arrows by 0700, the morning was cold, air crisp and there was fog. I was breathing ... read more

Ponte de Lima - Rubiaes (19km) Day 3 Ponte de Lima - Rubiaes (19km) Woke at 0600 and headed off by 0640. The morning was still dark and cool with a lot of fog of which we had to start looking very closely for the Yellow Arrows to show us the way. (On the previous trip the group missed an arrow and went the wrong way, they had a difficult start. So we all had to be on the look out for the elusive yellow arrows. These arrows can be a bit hidden, rubbed out, faded, or in a number of different places from stones, road, post, etc. You can imagine the excitement we had the night before when we found the first arrow and the end of the bridge the previous night). The fog lasted ... read more
