Coimbra blog Thankfully Portugal has a pretty impressive train system running north and south between the major cities of Porto and Lisbon. And smack in the middle is Coimbra, also connected by train. From Porto we just jumped on the metro near our hotel and arrived right at the train station. Once we arrived to Coimbra, we learned that we could take another train for a quicker way to town. Of course, thinking we might save time by not waiting for that train to arrive, we decided to walk, with our luggage. We later learned that the train would have dropped us off right next to our hotel AND that the route we walked was not meant for pedestrians. It’s always interesting arriving to a new city and not knowing what kind of distance you are ... read more

Hurray, we made it to our Coimbra hotel without the use of Miss GPS. To get here we took a chance with our book of Europe road maps and kept off the motorway system. As yet we have not been arrested for travelling on the electronic toll road without paying so the blogs keep coming. “Get arrested!” we hear some of you say. Sorry, we think we have a “Get out of jail” free card. All we have to do is go to a post office somewhere in Portugal and confess. We stopped at a wayside fruit stall and bought fresh cherries at 2.50 euros per kilo. We didn’t want that many and the man’s scales couldn’t register the small amount we bought, so after haggling him up from free to 2 euros everyone was happy. ... read more

The expansive generosity of the Verdade family was expressed once again as we were shuttled down the road to Coimbra. This was particularly appreciated because of rotating strikes on the part of the train service. I suppose they imagined us waiting at the station, with kids, for a train that might never come...depending on the whims of the union. But, good natured lovingkindness won over civic unrest. Coimbra is the home of Portugal's oldest university. It is the part of the country where one begins to notice the strong influence of Moorish culture. When Afonso Henrique threw off the Moorish yoke in 1145, Portugal as a distinct society began its development. But a large part of that identity is Arabic in origin. You can see it in the architecture and the music, in the darker skin ... read more

From Porto, we zip down the line and land in Mogofores station. It's time to spend some time with our friends the Verdades. The Familia Verdade live in a town called Avelas de Cima. No one could tell me how old the place was, but it's easy to see that the place is pretty darn old. After the bustle of Porto, Avelas de Cima was positively tranquil. People are old fashioned and extremely friendly. It could be the community ammenities, like the communal laundry pool (in use even in frigid March) and fountains (three, to be exact) that present excellent quality spring water to any who wish to take it. Sleepy cafes with sunny seats, orange and lemon trees left wild (producing abundantly even now) and a profusion of huge, naturalized canna lilies frame the rest ... read more

So I am skipping a few days out of our trip because I didn't bring the right memory cards for pictures, but I will make another entry on them out of sequence because it really was a fantastic place! After departing Lisbon and our traveling mates, we headed up the coast and spent two nights in Peniche and one night in Obidos (to follow) then off to the university town of Coimbra. The university is the main 'industry' there and the whole city seems to revolve around it. It has been around since the 11th century and has a very prestigious reputation and long list of famous scholars. We booked in at the Hotel Oslo and got a bit of a deal with some fancy negotiating---We were parked out front and someone pulled up behind me ... read more

Coimbra: September 14-15 From Salamanca we caught another bus to Portugal, where we were staying in the Portugese university town of Coimbra. Our accommodation had a terrace on the roof that looked out over Coimbra, affording great views of the houses and university that was built into hillside. The streets were hilly in parts but this is the norm in so many towns that I think I will miss my daily treks up and down the steps. As we arrived late in the day we interrupted our orientation walk to have dinner in a cafeteria style restaurants frequented by the students of the town. The university year had just begun and there weren’t so many students around yet, but those that were wore black capes quite like the students in Hogwarts! The next day we went ... read more

Coimbra as I soon found out was originally the capital of Portugal in the 12th century (the first dynasty.) As I explore the area more I found that there was an incredible amount of history related to this town. For example it was a major trading area for the christians in the north and the muslims in the south. The city was the capital from roughly 1250 to 1255 A.D. As I learned about the history from my guide I also visited the Joanina Library. After going to see the old Cathedral I decided to eat lunch at a coffee house downtown which had delicious food and the coffee was incredible! The Joanina Library is part of the University of Coimbra, which is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Then I continued on my tour ... read more

My travels with Lara took us on from Spain to Portugal, and the university town of Coimbra. The university itself is mingled with the narrow streets of the old town, up on a hill above the Mondego river. Some of the buildings reminded us a lot of home!... read more
