We drove down to Ponte da Piedade today. OMG. Absolutely amazing!! Again, the photos don’t do it justice! The altimeter on my phone said we were at about 140 ft at the top. You’ll see how scary it could be as you’re standing on the edge of the dirt looking down to the sea and rocks below!! There was a very nice lighthouse and those of you who know me know that I snapped many photographs of it. I had a total of over 50 photographs of the entire area, but I won’t bore with all of them. I also took a short video that shows the ocean waters as they come into a hole, but unfortunately am not able to post it to my blog.... read more

We departed Patricia’s around 4:00am headed for the Chunnel. We had reservations for a 7:50am departure, however, because we arrived early and there was space on the train, we got on the 6:20am train. This was good because that meant we would get into Bayonne, that much sooner. The train ride over was uneventful. The weather was dreary & misty (told by the rain drops on the car windows visible in my pictures) when we arrived in Calais. I drove until about 9 and then Gene took over. That allowed me time to snap photos. Unfortunately, not real sure of actually what is in the picture or where I took them. J They appeared to be a photo opp at the time. We didn’t encounter too much traffic until we got into Bordeaux. There was some ... read more

This blog will be limited in narrative but focus on photographs. After the cauldron that was Sevilla at 45°c, arriving in Portugal's magnetic Algarve via a three hour coach ride and a hair-raising taxi ride to the Vila Gale Atlantico resort, ten minutes from Albufeira, we settled in to our top floor suite. A gentle breeze swept across our south-facing veranda as we looked down on orange coloured clay roofs covering the typically whitewashed homes below, most of them clearly high-end. We were mere minutes walk to the beach and an excellent supermarket. Our plans were to relax totally while leisurely taking in the joys of the Algarve and it's decidedly slower pace before heading north as far as the exciting and incredibly attractive city of Porto and later the capital, Lisboa (Lisbon) and much more ... read more

What you should know about portugal: The water tastes like swimming water, but you get used to it really fast. Somehow it's the same everywhere, but always a little bit different. There are at least only a few big citys: Porto (where I haven't been), Lisbon (the biggest and most interesting one), Lagos (the one with the biggest youth-, surf- and partyscene) and Faro (maybe the hidden beauty). Most of the other citys are small and empty. Maybe a little boring for tourists except you like beeing alone or in the nature. Have in mind that most of the people living on the countryside are not speaking english, so learning some phrases in portugese can be helpful, spanish as well! If you are interested in the nature there is nearly no other way than a car. ... read more

Today is our last day in our lovely home in Manta Rota. We could not have asked for a nicer home or location. It is a quiet area right now as many people only come for the high season of July and August. We noticed a lot of the homes were still closed up for the season and so were some restaurants. We picked the right time to visit as the weather was lovely and no line ups to attractions. We headed back to Vila Real de Santo Antonio for coffee and pastries at the first coffee shop we visited in Portugal. It served great coffee and amazing fresh pastries and a nice atmospher. After coffee we did one more wander through the village before heading home. We all spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool ... read more

Today our coffee destination is the village Castro Marim which is in a valley between two castles. We enjoyed coffee and a sandwich in a pretty square below a 13th century castle. The historic castle had a wonderful medieval atmosphere to it as you wandered through the grounds. It also offered great panoramic views of the area. From there we crossed through the village to the castle on the other side of the valley. We could not enter this castle, but did walk along its outside walls.... read more

Geo: 37.1899, -8.43859This will be our last blog entry using Travelpod as they are shutting down their webpage as of June 19, 2017. You will now finds us at www.mytb.org/Dospalmas Today we visited the traditional Portugués town of Silves. Overlooking the town is a huge red brick castle with impregnable city walls and defensive gates. During the Moorish era Silves was a major trading location and this strategic importance was bitterly defended with the construction of the mighty castle and the solid city walls. We arrived in time for lunch so enjoyed pizzas at a lovely restaurant in the village. We then toured the old castle and its great panoramic views. We even watched a belly dancing performance and some falconers and their falcon. From there we wandered back through the village where we noticed many stork ... read more

Geo: 37.1258, -7.64984After a late breakfast we headed west to visit the town of Tavira. It had lovely cobblestone streets, ornate churches, Portuguese architecture and also a castle. Before visiting the castle we stopped for coffee and a waffle. It is a tourist town with lots of cafes and restaurants, but it is still charming. After viewing the castle we explored narrow streets and found a wonderful place for a late lunch. We all enjoyed some traditional Portuguese meals, including grilled squid, razor clams served in two ways, and seafood soup.Once we were back on the road we made one more stop at a small village called Cacela Velha. Cacela Velha is situated on a hill with a view of a lagoon and the ocean beyond. We had a quick wander through before heading home. Our ... read more
