Background: Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal is a founding member of NATO and entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986.

Faro, Portugal

 Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Faro
Well, I surprised Camille with a trip to Faro, Portugal, with the intentions of sitting on a different beach for a couple days. I normally sit on the beach in Alicante, so a change of pace and the opportunity to reunite with my ocean of the last 22 years, the Atlantic was irresistible. She was a bit cold, but I didn’t mind. I just hope she doesn’t find out that I’ve been cheating on her with the Mediterranean for the last three months. Anyway we to Madrid the night before on the 14th of March, almost a four hour train [View Full Entry]

Le gôut de la Floride

 Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Lagos

 Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Albufeira

Last I left off I was in Albuferia, Portugal counting down the days until I flew to London town. So a quick re-cap as its been sooo long… Arrived in Portugal after going via the states staying with Rizzo, Brent and Gordo, eating burgers, drinking beer and seeing sights, arrived in Lisbon with no idea of what direction to go, ended up enticing an argument between a group of oldies who then pulled me onto a train and kicked me off again at my stop. Snuggled into life at the Termas while avoiding hard labour and becoming a mosaic addict, at [View Full Entry]

Road Trip Part II

 Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Lagos
We entered Portugal to be greeted by a different landscape to that of Spain, whilst most of Spain was very dry, rocky, and sparse, Portugal was quite different with more rolling hills, green pastures and many farm animals. The southern coast of Portugal is an area known as the Algarve and is filled with little fishing villages and coastal resorts. We passed through several small towns before settling in to stay in Lagos, which I would imagine would be very pleasant in summer. It was by no means cold, even in December, but in summer due to the sea breezes it [View Full Entry]

Beach part II
Back streets of Lagos
At the Western tip of Europe

You must forgive me for the length of time it has been since Ive written. Ive had a lot on my mind. West Side Story for example. The song "Maria" has been on replay in my head for the past four days. It all began in Granada, where we had a wonderful time hopping from one tapas bar to another with our fellow AC mates. We hiked up the Alhambra and played frisbee until the clouds burned off so that we could see the Sierra Nevadas (the OTHER Sierra Nevadas). I have recently learned that these are the only available ski [View Full Entry]

Janels do Mar

 Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Albufeira
We chose this Aparthotel only because we wanted to try something different to the Paraiso de Albufeira for which I have already a review! The room is airy and spacious but very poorly decorated. The kitchen is fully equiped but we thought it best to give all utensils a good wash:). Our room had a great view to the outside pool and we could see the beach as well. The bathroom was tacky and most of it had minor cracks, ouch on the b.hind lol! The oil heater was not working and was leaking oil, but after we informed reception we [View Full Entry]

We went SC and had a T1 which was on the 3rd floor. The room was very spacious and clean. The kitchen was complete and the whole room was tastefully decorated. The facilities are excellent and the pools outside enormous. We only used the indoor pool and the jacuzi which let me tell u is a must, it's super warm. The room itself was just right and we never had to switch on the heat, the kids loved their stay:) The bathroom too was perfect, and let me tell u that the shower is potent, and I had myself a good [View Full Entry]

Sunny Lagos Days

 Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Lagos
A Beautiful Sunny Day Ends Our Stay in Lagos More Grottos and Beaches Today we got up and decided to head back to the cliffs. Thanks to the rain on Friday we had ended our cliff experience about half way early, therefore; today was our day to finish that leg of our adventure. After the mile or so walk back to where we ended our last hike we started walking/climbing the trails along the cliffs. Shortly after out trail hiking started we found the precarious steps down to the little grotto that was a nude beach. We decided to head [View Full Entry]

Fun at the beach in November

 Europe » Portugal » Algarve » Faro
I got up early to catch the morning train to Lagos, near the southwestern tip of Portugal. I took the metro to the stop closest to the station, which turned out to be a few blocks away. I made it to the station just as the train was arriving, so I didn't have time to make a reservation. The train wasn't too full though, so I didn't have trouble finding a free seat, but reservations are compulsory in Portugal so I wasn't sure what would happen. When the conductor arrived, he looked at the rail pass and then asked for the [View Full Entry]
