Home sweet home, czyli Basia podsumowuje wyjazd.
Z tamtąd parenaście godzin lotu i jesteśmy w Singapurze. Taka mała różnica.... read more
Busy day! I must start by noting there is a daddy-long-leg spider crawling across the floor of the chill-room in the hostel. At least, I hope that’s what it is. Anywho. Check-out was at 11h this morning... and I was so caught up in my dream that I thought my alarm was part of it... and woke up at 10h48. Good thing I packed the night before!! I def checked-out in my pajamas. I win at life. After getting dressed and leaving my backpack in lock-up, I set back out to continue exploring Gdansk. I returned to ul. Dluga area to pick up a few souvenirs and grab some lunch. To do so, I had to fight thru the crowds! There was some kind of festival..? Or perhaps the street vendors are always set up like ... read more
Well, I slept like a rock last night - woke up at 9h, rolled over it was 11h30ish, then it was 12h50. Yep, definitely good to go. Time to get up! As I sat on my bed pondering how to find the clothes in my backpack that I wanted to wear today, I notice two guys walk by my window. Can you say creepy?? (I should note that theyre doing construction on thehostel, and I knew the scaffolding was there. Also, there is no blind to my room.) Good thing I wasn't getting dressed... although I couldn't help but also find it creepy that they could see my sleep if they so chose to. I do have locked windows though - so no worries. Anywho. I trekked down the stairs and headed out for lunch in ... read more
Day 2 - So much travelling! But I made it.
Published: July 28th 2011Europe » Poland » Pomerania » GdanskOh what a long, long day! Flight from JFK to Berlin wasn't bad. I never sleep on flights, so that part was a little sucky. The food on the plan started great... and then I don't know what I had - probably the coleslaw - but I felt beyond ill. Hah. Great way to start. I found in interesting how everyone presumed I was German on the flight... I don't think I look overly German? Each steward(ess) addressed me in German first, followed by blank looks on my part. Even the girl sitting beside me started this epic convo... and I"m lie... English...? Francais? Haha. Landing in Berlin, it was raining and I still felt a little off, so there was no big desire to explore. I did however putter around the Reichstag area and walk ... read more

Poland part 1 – The Masurian Lakes, Gdansk, Torun and Warsaw
Published: July 16th 2011Europe » Poland » Pomerania » GdanskMy time in Poland didn’t get off to the best of starts. The first place I had planned to stop off was the Masurian Lake District, which is not too far from the Lithuanian border. I managed to cross the border by train from Vilnius with no problems, but when I got to the first big city in Poland, Suwalki, I was told that the bus that I was expecting to catch didn’t actually run on a Monday, and in fact there were no buses until the following day. I had no choice but to find a hotel and spend the night in Suwalki, which although would definitely not win any beauty prizes, wasn’t that bad a city. I checked the bus timetable on line again at the hotel, which showed the bus should have been ... read more
A holiday in Gdansk... In early June there was a national holiday in Sweden which gave us a few days off from work. We then flew to Gdansk in northern Poland and visited a few places. The first day on this trip we remained in Gdansk itself. We walked around and enjoyed the lovely historical centre or, if you prefer, the old town. The old town was founded in the Middle Ages and was part of the trade union Hanseatic League which was a very powerful economical alliance in northern Europe from the mid 14th century to the late 16th century. The old town was badly damaged during World War II but was restored to its former splendour in the decades following the war. Today the city centre is lined with cafés, restaurants and ice cream ... read more
Gdansk - A Baltic Town where WW11 had begun
Published: July 6th 2011Europe » Poland » Pomerania » GdanskToday I have seen a museum, few churches and some old streets just to notice I didnt get much amused. So what make people to see all these haunted stone walls, stained paintings and broken specimens! Its the history of mankinds smile and sufferings, their stories behind them I beleive......... So I woke up thinking I am already late for the free breakfast. I was actually not. Its my watch which saved me...its 1 hour ahead of polish time ! OK...its time for the essence.....I need to remind my self this travel blog is not a place to show off my ego.......or infact my pathetic life style. Gdansk .....Apparantly Nazis clad in Polish army uniforms attacked themselves in 1939 and show the dead bodies claiming Polish army had attacked them. These dead bodies were again of the ... read more
Just few months ago, Gdańsk was absolutely unfamiliar to me. I had no idea there is a city with that name and that beautiful appearance. Now, I cannot take all the images and memories I have had about Gdańsk out of my mind. They will be there, forever. Gdańsk is incredible. It has everything: an old town, a modern centre, medieval streets, 21st century highways... I have never seen any city that mixes everything in a very colourful way as Gdańsk does. Being there only for 3 days but that’s enough for me to love this city. Actually, my trip was a journey around the area of Tri-City (Trójmiasto), which includes Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia. A little bit information about this place: it’s located in the northern part of Poland, where the land meets the Baltic ... read more
Gdansk, Poland - Let the travelling begin!
Published: May 16th 2011Europe » Poland » Pomerania » GdanskYou know, leaving my Auckland life wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I think the trick is denial, and lots of it. After quitting my job, leaving my awesome Takapuna flat, selling my car, and having an utterly brilliant leaving party as well as mandatory leaving drinks the night before, I eventually get to where I'm saying goodbye to my family at the airport. It's only around here where that realisation sets in: I'm actually leaving the country! AAAH!! Where was I when I made this decision!? So, a full 48 hours of travelling and futile attempts at sleep later, and after being reunited with my long-lost friends James & Hannah, I found myself standing in the chilly night air of Gdansk in Poland. One term comes to mind when I think about ... read more
