We spent most of today on the train. Our ride from Prague to Kostnice, Poland, took about 6 hours that seemed more like 12. The WCs on the train did not have toilet paper (thank goodness for carrying tissue!), so that was a bit disgusting. Some women boarded about 2/3 of the trip through to stock them so I took advantage while I had the chance. I've heard horror stories about the WCs in the actual stations so I haven't attempted to walk into one. When we arrived in Kostnice, I was a bit worried about what Poland would be like. The train station and surrounding neighborhood were in pretty sad shape, and the train we connected to looked to be about 100 years old. That said, the ride wasn't too bad (I did skip ... read more

Just a quickie to say how much we enjoyed Krakow and especially the Hotel Eden in the Jewish quarter of this ancient city. We've just left a review of this hotel on www.tripadvisor.com if you want to read a more in-depth review of this super little place to stay complete with photos. We flew with Easyjet who leave a lot to be desired with when it comes to their free-seating policy, which means you are not allocated a seat but instead sit at the first available seat when you board the plane. As you can guess, its a melee to find a seat. On top of that, on board prices for snack and drinks are extortionate and many people did not buy what was on offer. £3 for a 330ml can of Heineken is way ... read more

So, first day in Krakow, went straight to the Auschwitz Museum..That's the Nazis' biggest concentration and execution camp... It was horrific. I remember seeing the A-bomb museum in Hiroshima...and it was already very sad....this one..the stories were....OMG.....the more I learned about the WWII...the sadder it got..... I took the guided tour...it was a little rush, but the idea got through... Just difficult to explain in words....the quantity......amazing...and suprising... Now I think the Poles are very strong people and Nation...Their history is just....sad. Anyways. got out of the camp...went back to Krakow. Wanted to ask about some guided tours to other places but the cheap tour agent was CLOSED!!! ahhhh...so ended up touring around the old town in Krakow....nice ne. not too speical tho. They are celebrating this 750 yrs of establishment of the city so ... read more

It's warm and the surrounding countryside is vivid green under the clear blue sky. A thin strip of lush forest stands just outside the boundary of the camp, barbed wire divides us from it. The trees have brought scattered ash back to life. It's hard to see the red-brown wire in front of the forest today, my eyes are drawn to the vibrancy of the surrounding countryside. I'm sure the people who stood here before me, just out of the carriage in their 1940's dusty clothes and dirty shoes saw the wire much more clearly as they adjusted their wire rimmed glasses after their inhumane journey. It was probably a little confusing at first, then to those who survived the platform to understand it's true meaning, damning. ____________________________________________________________________________ Later that evening, as we left the apartment ... read more

After a very early start (2am) we left Israel for Poland. Was a challenging experience getting through security at Ben Gurion airport and wasn't helped by us lining up in the wrong place for 40mins and finally getting security clearance before being told we had to go down stairs and do it all again in the correct queue. Went to Haifa and the Nth Israel on the Sunday. Was very beautiful and interesting. Even drove through Valda's home town of Netanya twice. Only problem was an idiot old American woman who every time we stopped for a 5min break would go shopping for 45mins and everyone would have to wait for her. She got her just deserts when she got lost in an Arab market because she wandered away from the group to take a photo. ... read more

We woke up early again today, to finish the other half of our concentration camp tour. Yesterday, I learned a lot from our tour. Seeing with my own eyes, the buildings and places where many people died just touched me greatly. Today had an even greater impact on me because the camp we visited today was where most of the people were executed, it’s actually known as the extermination camp. In planning on where we wanted go, Abby and I had to think of a place in which it would give us spiritual enlightenment. We picked Poland because it contained these concentration camps. Not only were Jews killed here, but many Jehovah’s Witnesses as well. This place had four gas chambers that resembled showers. Hundreds of people were forced into a concrete building and the only ... read more
