This is definitely another place I would live. The city had a very cool, inviting vibe and there is tons to do and see. I met Anne and Ben, a Californian and a Canadian who were staying in my room and we all went out for my last night and saw the Redlight district and some of those famous coffee shops. Needless to say some pictures have been omitted... The next day Anne and I went to the Van Gogh museum and the Anne Frank house an then I headed out to Berlin that night -- talk about a quickie!... read more
I think this kind of looks like a Van Gogh painting -- my camera wasnt taking very good night shots towards the end...

After taking the chunnel back to Brussels and staying for a quick night and then leaving in the morning, I had arrived in Amsterdam. This is definitely another place I would live -- this city has a very cool vibe to it. I stayed with a friend of my father's (thanks Phil!) and then in a hostel for my last night. During my second day there Phil took me to two towns outside of Amsterdam along the cost called Marken and Hoorn. These towns are so precious! Here are a few pictures... ... read more

So, the yesterday was a much better day after a deliciously greasy dinner of patates (french fries) and a kaas souffle (something cheesy and bready and artery clogging for sure). =) Anouk and I went to the Aldi supermarket to get some wine, beer and snacks before everybody arrived. The people at the party: me, and my housemates: anouk, chiel, arjan, and janne Janne's boyfriend Jasper, Nina and her friend Kim, Wiebke, Anouk's friend Bergit and Lea (Israeli student I met here) and her boyfriend Steven. So there was quite the crowd. The MTV Europe awards show was also on that evening so we watched some performances and entertained eachother with stories, goofing off, eating a delicious hazelnut cookie coffee cream cake, etc etc. My housemates got me a really nice gift which I wasn't expecting ... read more

Well I'm the big 2-1. Now I guess I'm considered a real adult in American terms and am responsible enough to buy a bottle of wine. =) Before I talk about today, I'll mention a bit about last night. I studied all day and by 11pm was so tired of studying so I went downstairs to watch some tv. Dr No (James, James Bond) was on, so I sat there watching it letting my brain recover. All of a sudden, Anouk yelled my name over and over again from upstairs. I wondered what on earth she wanted as Arjan had already gone to bed and she would probably wake him up. I climbed up the stairs and there was everybody in the little hallway with big smiles on their faces and a Dutch "Happy Birthday" song ... read more

Wow so much time has passed since Rome. Classes started and in between that and having the time of my life I have not had much time. Luckily I only had to take 2 classes that met 4 days a week. Other friends that I have take 4 classes that meet all 5 days and are up to their ears in homework. I took an Introduction to Celtic Studies course which took aspects of linguistics and archeology and classical literature rolled up into one stupendously hard final exam. My second class was called Present Day Dutch Society, which was basically entirely made up of foreign exchange students. It dealt with different aspects of the Dutch culture ranging from the typical stereotypes of the Netherlands to the actual drug laws, to political history, to government make up ... read more

As promised, this blog direct from Amsterdam comes courtesy of our guest author, Madeline Brady... For those who know me you will understand that my excitement wasn’t for the fact that I was about to take my first overseas trip from London but for the fact that I was at an airport and about to board a plane! Nothing’s changed. Alison, Jules, Lib and I took the short, but delayed, flight from London to Amsterdam - it was Jess Monk’s birthday and what better idea than to spend it with her, and experience a little of Amsterdam at the same time. We pretty much landed and headed straight to a bar to meet up with Jess’ friends and celebrate. It was so great to see Jess & to meet her friends, who thankfully spoke English, and ... read more

I've conquered my cold thanks to plenty of sleep, echinacea, and good thoughts. This is perfect timing since I'll be going out on Thursday to celebrate my birthday! I can't believe it's already here! =) I've been studying as usual and making good progress - only 10 more articles to go! The articles have interesting topics, but there are a few annoying ones that discuss an amazing issue but then at the end you find out that there is not enough research to prove that factor x works at all. what a bummer! Along with reading articles, I started another book alongside the Tortilla Curtain since that one gives me weird dreams. The new book is horrible yet addicting. I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I think it's a romance/chick novel. I always made fun of ... read more

The temperature is getting closer and closer to zero degrees and the process of trees getting naked will soon be over with. As I think back of this summer of 2006 I remember some highlights that I´d like to share: June * I handed in my Master's Thesis and got top grade for it * June 7th a birth took place and for the first time Giv set his eyes on the world we are managing for him! * My dearest George (AUS), Trish (CAN) and Olivia Gorajewski (POL/SWE) honored me with their presence and attended an unforgettable pool party (see ) * The day after P-Day (the reputable pool party) ... read more
