International recognition of Macedonia's independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 was delayed by Greece's objection to the new state's use of what it considered a Hellenic name and symbols. Greece finally lifted its trade blockade in 1995 and the two countries agreed to normalize relations, although differences over Macedonia's name remain. The undetermined status of neighboring Kosovo, implementation of the Framework Agreement - which ended the 2001 ethnic Albanian armed insurgency - and a weak economy continue to be challenges for Macedonia. FIRST SQURILLE!!

We leave for Numburg Germany at 9.30am Morning of Sunday 29th October, from the capital Skopje (Скопје in Macedonian - which for some reason reminds me of "cronejay!") That means we have to be up and fully packed at 4.30am to catch the 5am bus the 250km to Skopje from Strumica!! Yes you can judge by the title that Lex is in completely recovered health... otherwise it would be something more serious!! Ez here! Well here we are... 2 weeks in Strumica! Zoki arrived on the 15th - Saturday, we made the 250km-ish trip to the capital Skopje, to pick him up from his 24hour bus ride from Germany! Interesting to meet him, and life has kinda set back into a pattern of doing well... not heaps, but getting around a little bit, socialising, eating (too much!), and generally existing! Well... been in Macedonia for a week now and figured I'd get a quick update on here! We are staying with Alex's family in Strumica, Macedonia... few quick facts: Population: Macedonia: 2 000 000 Strumica: 50 000 + 30 000 more including the 72 surrounding villages! Currency: Macedonian Dinar, some use of euro! 1 Euro = 61.3 Dinar... an hour in a net cafe = about 30 dinar max, can of coke = 30 dinar, restaraunt pizza = 180 dinar, cheap taxi fare = 100 dinar, beer at a club = 60 dinar... aleeeeeex here...we are...in... Macedonia!!!!!!so far itys been nogo nogo dobra!!! hahha ez n me have had major macedonian lessons ... zoki in typical fashion left mace before we even went overseas hahhahaha so alees and cotcho are our lifesavers, translationg when things get tricky with basic words and hand gestures. We have had the grand tour of ruins around strumica by alees(my 25 yr old cuzzie and his mate ... whos name means flower in english hah) and its been lovely! Sept 27th--After a long trainride to Thessaloniki in northern Greece, one night in a cheap and kind of dirty hostel, and another early morning train, we arrived in Macedonia. Our main reason for visiting this country was to visit two of Heidi's friends, Kelley and Laura**, who are in the Peace Corps here. Kelley had just arrived so we only had a few hours to see her during her training, but we spent the rest of the week with Laura, staying at her apartment in Prilep a few days, then down to Ohrid, a beautiful little town on a lake.
