I arrived in Macedonia yesterday, after looking forward to it for a long time. The reason is a very good friend from Skopje who has tought me a lot about Macedonia and told me what to see. Unfortunately I'm still pretty sick and haven't even had the energy to try and find out if he's home or visit all the destinations he has pointed out. But I do believe, after only a little more than a day, that Macedonia is certainly a destination for later vacations. I'm in Skopje at the moment staying at a wonderful room with a real shower and cabel-tv. I haven't had a really nice shower in weeks, maybe a year considering the dorm I live in in Slovenia. This is driving me nuts. I have just spent the last hour or two going through my e-mail, and my Internet-cafe neighbour is having cybersex with some Arab. Actually, I think he is in Turkey, but she has been showcasing some Arabic words. She started with teaching him Macedonian - yelling "da! da! da! (yes! yes yes!) - and now she has mellowed, calling him her 'lotus' and asking "why has this happened to us, I want to be near you. Honey" whilst smoking a cigarette. Think of a phone-sex line, where there is a fat woman on the other end moaning and groaning. Except this girl isn't fat - just ugly. And really loud. Really fucking loud. Damn it, I did it. I have become something that I have always been ideologically opposed to when travelling; someone who spends a few days in a country and makes sweeping generalisations. Knowing that time is limited on my trip to Macedonia I simply cannot afford to let an opinion develop naturally; I actively searched one out;)… Macedonia is noticeably more western and developed than Albania, I stayed in Ohrid, Macedonia’s tourist-mecca,  which had a quaint little pedestrian shopping street catering to tourists from the surrounding countries (this is where Greeks take their holidays when the local Chlamydios islands are in season!). The attraction of Ohrid is its eastern orthodox churches and monastery’s . The churches are not too dissimilar to those you’ll see anywhere in the region - however, these are unique in that they are set in strategically scenic locations ... read more
