International recognition of Macedonia's independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 was delayed by Greece's objection to the new state's use of what it considered a Hellenic name and symbols. Greece finally lifted its trade blockade in 1995 and the two countries agreed to normalize relations, although differences over Macedonia's name remain. The undetermined status of neighboring Kosovo, implementation of the Framework Agreement - which ended the 2001 ethnic Albanian armed insurgency - and a weak economy continue to be challenges for Macedonia. looking for the sun Europe » Macedonia » Ohrid
June 9th - Orhid Today was an elusive search for sunshine. This town and the surroundings are beautiful, but I just love sun. I thought that by June it would be well unto summer weather, but I guess I should have done a bit more research as it was chilly an rainy almost the whole time there. We didn’t have any definite plans, but just wondered throughout the town checking out all the nooks and crannies. After a disappointing lunch in the newer part of town we headed down to the lake front to walk along over the monasteries on the [View Full Entry]

GOSTiVAR Europe » Macedonia » Skopje
I visited the Gostivar Macedonia in 2004. I have been notime to spend the location but I took some photos from this place. Albanians and Turkish peoples live there with the Macedonians. I learned that 60% of Gostivar peoples are Albanians. Some of the local buildings and market places name are written with the three different languages. 2004 Yili Eylül Ayinda Yağmurlu Bir Günde Ziyaret Etme Şansi Buldugum Gostivar Birçok Tarihi Mekana Sahip. “Its like Iraq; no war,…but war….” Yes, that’s right, we are in the Republic of Makedonija (the ‘Former Yugoslav’ one, though officially that title doesn’t exist inside the country…) - to the west of Bulgaria and therefore nowhere near Turkey or Istanbul! Home of the second best flag in Europe. Provocatively Bulgarians regard this place as ‘Western Bulgaria’ so no tour of Bulgaria would have seemed complete without coming here, also we had to get a package sent somewhere and Poste Restante doesn’t seem to exist in B [View Full Entry]

Much to my surprise, getting out of Albania was rather trouble-free. I managed to board the bus mildly conscious for a five-in-the-morning departure for Korçe. Having arrived a few minutes early and aware that Albanians share the same concept of punctuality as the rest of their Mediterranean neighbors (which is zero), I darted off for an espresso only to be told to get right back on the bus immediately. The driver saw no other passengers this steamy morning and decided it was time to go. We were out of Berat before 4:50. Go figure. The bus to Korçe takes a circuitous [View Full Entry]

Still in the train after Serbia i got to Macedonia. After heavy armed border controlls after Presevo Valley at Kumanovo i could continue towards Skopje and on to Geveglija on the border with Greece. Here i also took pictures and enjoyed the views. A change of climate told me i was getting close to Greece. The weather was getting better, sunnier and hotter. Macedonia was small village after small village and you could see many mosques in every village you passed. Far you could see the mountains and the nature was beautiful. The closer to greece the drier it got. [View Full Entry]

I recieved a very interesting comment on my Santorini page from a very pissed off American girl, whom I unfortunately can't find in the blogger-search. I would like to get a chat with her, she seems interesting. But before any more Americans might be to offended, I will try and explain my earlier comments on being with 30 Americans. So here we go: 1. Firstly I have American as well as Canadian friends, whom I am very fund of. And I find great interest in having a chat with an American considering the fact that if you wish to know something [View Full Entry]

Skopje - I'm in love Europe » Macedonia
I arrived in Macedonia yesterday, after looking forward to it for a long time. The reason is a very good friend from Skopje who has tought me a lot about Macedonia and told me what to see. Unfortunately I'm still pretty sick and haven't even had the energy to try and find out if he's home or visit all the destinations he has pointed out. But I do believe, after only a little more than a day, that Macedonia is certainly a destination for later vacations. I'm in Skopje at the moment staying at a wonderful room with a real shower [View Full Entry]

Name games Europe » Macedonia
When travelling, the Lonely Planet can often get you out of tricky situations, though it's generally wise not to refer to it for everything. Sometimes, however, it can get you into those situations. So it was when we arrived at the bus station in Skopje, the Capital. After much hassle buying our bus tickets for Ohrid the next, we consulted The Book, and decided to camp in 'Skopje's urban camping option! On south bank of the river. Bring plenty of Mosquito repellent!' So, off we went in a taxi to the dot on the map which I had pointed out [View Full Entry]

High up over Ohrid

This is driving me nuts. I have just spent the last hour or two going through my e-mail, and my Internet-cafe neighbour is having cybersex with some Arab. Actually, I think he is in Turkey, but she has been showcasing some Arabic words. She started with teaching him Macedonian - yelling "da! da! da! (yes! yes yes!) - and now she has mellowed, calling him her 'lotus' and asking "why has this happened to us, I want to be near you. Honey" whilst smoking a cigarette. Think of a phone-sex line, where there is a fat woman on the other end [View Full Entry]

MAKEDONIJA Europe » Macedonia
I have become something that I have always been ideologically opposed to when travelling; someone who spends a few days in a country and makes sweeping generalisations. Knowing that time is limited on my trip to Macedonia I simply cannot afford to let an opinion develop naturally; I actively searched one out;)… Macedonia is noticeably more western and developed than Albania, I stayed in Ohrid, Macedonia’s tourist-mecca,  which had a quaint little pedestrian shopping street catering to tourists from the surrounding countries (this is where Greeks take their holidays when the l [View Full Entry]
