Thankfully it was much warmer in Florence today. After breakfast, we walked to the Ponte Vecchio bridge (built in 1593). It is a woman's shopping dream - every store sells jewerly. The boys were "so bored", but Tammy loved window shopping. We checked out the various piazzas off the Arno river and took a guided tour at the Palazzo Vecchio castle built around 1298. This was a special tour for children complete with hidden staircases and passages. A little confusing for Gavin and John (the tour guide's english was hard to understand), but they still really enjoyed it. After a brisk walk across town, we caught the tour bus to Pisa. The main attraction, of course, is the leaning tower but the catherdal is also very neat. We walked through part of the town and had ... read more

Conveniently (and by accident) the place we were staying in Rome was located on the train line to Pisa which meant we did not have to go back to the main terminal station. There were no Eurostar trains on this line which meant no expensive supplements but also a train which stopped at a lot of stations. We were never intending to stay the night in Pisa so when we reached the station we looked for lockers to store our bags. Strangely all the lockers were taped off and we had to deposite our bag with a person. After doing this we hurried off to the main square which contains a large cathedral, baptistry and of course the famous leaning tower. We were surprised to find that the square containing the tower is very large compared ... read more

We made a short stopover in Pisa on the way to the Cinque Terre. Our plan is to spend a couple of hours in Pisa to take the standard holding up the tower pictures. It looks as though a thousand of our closest friends have the same idea. We get our pictures and get back on the train. Off to the Cinque Terre!... read more

Go see this forgotten wonder while you still can! Construction began on the Tower of Pisa in 1174 by Bonanno Pisano and work ceased during construction of the third story because it started sinking into the ground. The tower remained unfinished for 90 years until engineers built higher floors with one side taller than the other in an effort to compensate for the tilt. Although this monument can be considered a real masterpiece of architecture, it is mostly famous for its strong inclination. This inclination is undoubtedly due to a sinking of the ground right from the time of its construction. Unfortunately, even today the tower continues to sink very slowly. It is estimated to sink about 1 mm. every year. No one can state whether the tower will continue to sink at its present rate ... read more

We woke early-ish and paid the price by over paying the hotel guy, who kindly told us of our mistake and gave us some cash back. As a token of appreciation we stole the guide book he had kindly lent us. It was actually an accident; we vowed we’d send it back to him. It’s still on our bookshelf. Before catching a train to Pisa we decided to go up the tower (Campanile) in Saint Mark's Square, it is just under 100 metres high and has great views. It also acts as a bell tower and scared the crap out of us when it went off and we were standing right underneath the bell. I felt like it was going to take my head off it was that close. After sitting in the sun for an ... read more

When we arrived into Pisa it was a nice night so we thought we’d not get a bus to our hostel but instead walk. Bad idea. We got lost again, the directions we received after booking online were crap and it didn’t help that there were no signs whatsoever for the leaning tower. If there had been we would have been fine because we were staying just down the road from it. Not to worry, we did find it, the leaning tower looks brilliant at night so I took about 40 gazillion photos. Soon my stomach thought my neck had been cut, so we found a restaurant that had views of the tower and ate there. Thankfully the hotel had a computer so I transferred all the photos I had taken onto a flash stick meaning ... read more

Wow, for those who got far on the last blog. congrats! i definitely owe you a cookie or sumthing when i get back! cuz that one was massive! rite now, we're waiting for our train to Venice from Florence, and soooooo, we figure, we're sooo beat up from walking that we'll computer it up! (our feet are seriously, all blistered and bandaged...) SO, continuing on in eurotrip 2007..... PISA, ITALY! for those who can't tell by the name, Pisa = Leaning Tower of Pisa. We get to Pisa @ night after an extremely bumpy ride provided to us by the discount airline, Ryanair, we arrive at the campsite where we realized that we weren't actually staying inside a building but a trailer. We chat with a few of our trailermates, and then ... read more
