Todays gelato flavours - GMB - Torroncino(nougat, honey and nut flavours) GLB - Bacio (chocolate and hazelnut) The aromas of pastries somehow drifted up the three flights of stairs from the breakfast room to our room and got us thinking about getting ready for the day as the sunlight streamed into the room when we opened the shutters. We are becoming fans of the shuttered rooms we have had as it not only reduces any outside noise but also keeps the room dark and aids sleeping. The shutters come in different types and the ones in this hotel are very easily opened by pulling on a drawstring and hey presto you have light. We have scored well with this hotel and we have a room as well furnished as the Best Western and even a bit cheaper at €32 ... read more

Todays Gelato flavours - GMB- a double header of Liqorice and Pistachio GLB- a double header of Pistachio and Chocolate Another solid 8 hours sleep and we almost ready to start what was one of the longer days drives we have had so far from Siracusa to Villaggio Mose about 6km from Agrigento. The day dawned beautifully fine again and we should have gone outside the hotel earlier before breakfast for a chance to catch a last uninterrupted view of Mt Etna before a small amount of cloud rolled over the peak.It was the only cloud that was in the sky but such is the height of the mountain it catches whatever is in the atmosphere.Never mind we already had some great pictures and video for the archives. Breakfast was again substantial and we partook in ... read more

Sunny, Scintillating Sicily!! Greetings Blog fans, here is part one of my two part blog for the 8 days we had in wonderful Sicily. We seemed to have spent our last few trips in cold places so we wanted a bit of sunshine, culture and food and drink for this break so, with that criteria in mind Sicily came out top of the wish list. We flew into the Palermo airport which is actually 30km outside of Palermo and picked up our hire car. As we had 8 days we had decided to do a loop around the island finishing in Palermo. 8 days is no-where near long enough to see all of Sicily (you need 3-4 weeks) so we sadly had to skip quite a large section of this fascinating island. We picked up the ... read more

Geo: 37.3111, 13.5767Our GPS turned out to be a boon or bust situation today. For some reason it routed us away from the main motorway and we spent hours in the countryside which although very interesting was also frustrating. The area is very agricultural with many vineyards, fruit trees, vegetables, etc. We also found ourselves in small towns. It seems that even the larger roads end up being routed through the small towns with the exception of the autostrades. There is a lot of road work going on and no detour signs. The GPS did not know of the changes even though I loaded new maps just before leaving. It took us at least twice as long to get to our destination which is Agrigentio. We were so lost at one point that a kindly utility ... read more

Thursday 11th March - Saturday 13th March (Luscious Lil) Leaving Avola we travelled up into the mountains towards the ancient city of Noto only to be thwarted 5km away by a sign stating no 3.5t, or vehicles over a 2.5m, we lost out on both accounts. We had a brief discussion about whether to leave the ‘magic bus’ and cycle in, but as it was an isolated spot we didn’t fancy returning to an empty van! So we pushed on towards our next planned stop. Travelling in the interior of Sicily is a very different experience to the coast, the interior of the island is beautiful and apart from large towns that appear from nowhere it is sparsely populated. This is refreshingly different from the coast which has been disappointing in its scruffiness. The down side ... read more

Tuesday 16th September Licodia - Agrigento We had planned to leave Licodia three days earlier to spend a few nights at Agrigento, but between ourselves decided to spend the extra time in Licodia. So we planned to make Agrigento a day trip. Katelyn was given more panadol for her fever and off we set to Agrigento. Although the road was o.k it was a little curvy and so poor Katelyn threw up. We went to the Valley of the Temples, a huge ridge of land that had a few temples along it. The three main temples we saw were Temple of Hercules which was believed to be the oldest temple, Temple of Concordia which was the best preserved and Temple of Juno which we were able to work around. There was a bar in the middle ... read more

May 22, 2008 AGRIGENTO, Sicily, Italy Thursday morning we drove north through the country side and along the Sicilian coast to Agrigento. Another nice drive. This is a small city on the west coast of Sicily and is a resort town with some beautiful beach areas and resorts. ( and some very nice private villas ). Some of the rather rocky beaches are being filled with truckloads of nice, fine, sand. Someone is spending a lot of money !! It is obvious that the tourist business, with all the coastline and beaches, is a very important part of the Sicilian economy. And OH !!! The Gelato. In a small gelateria in Agrigento they have the best Ice Cream we have ever had. The other interesting thing is the amount of vineyards. They really like their wine ... read more
