A quick blog for Siem Reap and the floating village of Chong Khneas Siem Riep is a strange place, it’s a bit like the Disney land of Asia, it’s very commercial and ludicrously touristy. Most tourist fly in to Siem Reap to see the temples then head straight out destined for the beaches of Thailand which is a shame. Just seeing Siem Reap will give you the feeling that Cambodia is a rich and tourist filled place where there is plenty of tourist dollars to spread around, which is very much not the case in the rest of the country. just outside of Siem Reap is the floating fishing village of Chong Khneas on the mighty Tonle Sap lake which is the biggest lake in Asia. the village is made up of about five thousand people

It has that crazy Asian feeling with loads and loads of people on scooters and the city has a real buzz about it. I was surprised by how wealthy it was with the main shopping city full of lovely building and designer clothes stores, with the sunshine and the white marble pavements parts of it reminded me of Beverley Hills!! Ho Chi Minh also has some impressive sky scrapers and old colonial architecture, it’s a really great city. For New Years we decided to have a mini tour of the city so about 4pm after a quick power nap we put on the only decent clothes we had

It has thousands of faces carved into it and the Architecture is really striking both from a distance and close up. It is also incredibly well preserved and surrounded by the jungle and has an incredibly long and striking walkway to access it over the moat. Which when the only way to get around was by elephant must have been a real WOW to people who approached it. We visited Bayon three times and each time we saw something new as we visited at different times of the day. The Tree Temple or Tombs Raider Temple of Ta Prohm was made famous by the film, and also the incredibly

Out Tuk Tuk driver who we had arrange to be our driver for the next 3 days was waiting outside our Siem Riep guest house for us and we eagerly set off excited to finally be heading to the world famous Angkor Wat. Even at that time in the AM Siem Riep was pretty busy, and as we got to the entrance gate of the complex it went from busy to outright manic!! There were people everywhere, thousands of them, plus thousands more in buses and coaches. Once we had our passes we jumped back into the Tuk Tuk and joined the

We had a 6 hour minibus transfer through to Phom Penh which I was strangely looking forwards to. For me the best way to get a feel for the countryside it to travel through it overland. The roads once we crossed over the board were dusty dirt roads and we travelled through some very poor looking villages with lots of people toiling in the fields. Not a piece of machinery in sight although there were plenty of water buffalo’s (South East Asian Tractors). Apart from the buffalo’s the landscape reminded me of parts of Africa and the basic houses we passed could have been from Zambia or Malawi. As Cambodia is one of the world’s poorest countries

We flew into HCMC late at night on the 22nd of January, we were both pretty tired from the long flight from the UK but the taxi ride to our hotel gave us our first glimpse of Ho Chi Minh and we were both pretty excited. There is something about Asian cities that I love, maybe it is all the flashing neon lights or the thousands of people that wizz around on scooters. Maybe it’s the fact that you often see families of 4 or 5 squeezed onto one scooter or the vast array of attachments that allows a scooter to be turned into a shop or a transit van that never

Taormina is on Sicily’s Ionia coast famous for its warm crystal clear water. Its Idyllically perched on a rocky promontory high above the sea, Taormina has been the most popular tourist destination in Sicily for a couple of hundred of years. It famous for its beautifully restored mediaeval buildings, breathtaking views around every corner and a giddy network of winding streets strewn with shops, bars and restaurants. In my opinion it has to be one of the top holiday resorts in Europe. Added to this the town offers fantastic views of the coast, with Mt. Etna towering behind

We seemed to have spent our last few trips in cold places so we wanted a bit of sunshine, culture and food and drink for this break so, with that criteria in mind Sicily came out top of the wish list. We flew into the Palermo airport which is actually 30km outside of Palermo and picked up our hire car. As we had 8 days we had decided to do a loop around the island finishing in Palermo. 8 days is no-where near long enough to see all of Sicily (you need 3-4 weeks) so we sadly had to skip quite a large section of this fascinating island. We picked up the

It had been drizzling most of the day and as we got closer to Reykjavik it started to get a lot heavier. Our first impressions were that is was a ghost town, there was hardly a car on the road or anyone on the streets. We had to double check that this was a Saturday and not a Sunday. We subsequently learnt that on the Easter weekend the majority of the population like to get together as a family and east a meal of lamb at home. After we found our hostel and dropped our gear off we headed out into the rain to explore.

We arrived into Keflavik airport at 9:30am looking forwards to our first taste of Iceland. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t in as happy a mood as we were and were greeted with a thick overcast fog and a drizzle that was like a fine mist. Although this looked like light rain after a couple of minutes of exposure to it you were actually soaked to the skin, sadly this was the most frequent weather that we encountered on our trip. We picked up our hire car and headed out to explore the Keflavik peninsular and our first taste of Iceland. The weather wasn’t looking like it would improve and viability was down to less than a hundred
