I wake in a cold sweat. I remember what I wrote in the blog last night, and realise that it's probably offensive to a few entire countries. I hope no one's read it yet. I quickly press the "unpublish" button and make some radical edits. I decide that from now on blogging needs to come either before beer or a very long time after it. Today's the last day before a busy patch, so Issy decides that we should take it easy. She says she won't be leaving our balcony. A few minutes later she says that we need to go down to breakfast. She notices my puzzled look, and remarks that the 99% of the population who are less literal than me would have understood that her previous two statements weren't actually contradictory. I feel ... read more

Yesterday was a bit tiring, so we decide to spend most of today relaxing. We do however feel the urge to at least do some gentle exploring, so we set off down the hill into Monterosso. The key to the hotel room weighs about five kilograms so when I put it in my pocket I walk on a lean. It seems that Monterosso is in two parts, Old and New, connected by a short single lane road tunnel through the cliff, and a walking path around it. Old Monterosso is very cute, with a square near the waterfront and narrow windy streets leading further back up into the valley. We go into the St John the Baptist Church, which we read was built in the late 1200s. It has a separate baptistery across the street which ... read more

Today was our last full day in Cinque Terre and we had planned to take the ferry between the five villages and photograph them from the sea. The Sea ... however ... had different ideas. It was storming and raining and we were told the ferry would be unable to dock at the villages. Maybe next trip. So once again we hopped on the train ... this time to Corniglia, the only Cinque Terre village not on the water. When we arrived we climbed from the station up a tall staircase to this small but beautiful mountain top village. We took a couple of rest stops but we made it to the summit. We spent about 90 minutes walking the narrow streets of this village that about 200 people call home. The word "quaint" comes to ... read more

Welcome to our blog. We are having trouble with wi-fi band width, so no photos today. We will add them in the future. We arrived in Cinque Terre after and long, but thankfully uneventful, day of travel. We left Chicago on Wednesday morning, and after a nice lunch in New York we hopped on our flight to Milan. When we at Milan Malpensa International Airport we jumped on the Malpensa Express, a local train that took us into Milan Centrale, one of the largest train terminals in Europe. It is a gigantic marble edifice with 22 platforms, dozens of restaurants and seemingly millions of travelers. Fuzz thought the station looked "like something Hitler would have built," which was not far off ... it was built by Mussolini. While we waited for our train to Cinque Terre ... read more

Today was our first full day in Italy. We are staying in Cinque Terre, an Italian National Park featuring five historic fishing villages that could only be accessed by sea until the railroad arrived in 1929. The five villages and the park named after them are collectively "Cinque Terre," which in English means ... wait for it ... Five Villages! It is a picture postcard place with beautiful, brightly colored homes clinging to the sides of sheer cliffs, like infants to their mothers. We are staying in Monterosso al Mare, the northern most and largest of the villages. We rented a lovely apartment overlooking the Mediterrenean Sea. Moving south from Monterosso al Mare, the villages are Venazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Today we began to explore ... After a good night's sleep, listening to waves crash ... read more

Today is our last day in Cinque Terre. The specialty of Cinque Terre is lemons. There is a really good frozen lemon drink shop. It costs 2.50 Euro per drink. We saw The Giant which is a giant sculpture of Neptune, God of the Sea, which is carved into the cliff. After that we went swimming for two hours.... read more

This morning we left Rome and caught the train to Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre means 5 towns. It is a small area on the west coast of Italy. There are 5 small towns on the cliffs next to the sea. It took us 4 hours by train to get to the town called Monterosso where we are staying. On the train I met a little boy called Danielle. He was nearly two. I made him a loom band bracelet and his mum gave me some biscuits. In Monterosso I played in the sea. I wanted to go swimming but Mum said it was too cold.... read more

Saturday, 16th June, 2012 – Monterosso Al Mere On the train journey from Arezzo, we passed some high mountains that looked from a distance to have snow on them. On getting closer, we realised that the mountain was in fact a giant quarry. The mountain had been stripped of all vegetation and marble and granite was being quarried there (see photo). There were huge yards full of the cut stone along the railway line - some looked to weigh in excess of a couple of tonnes! We arrived after a very tiring day of travel on 3 different trains. After getting the shuttle bus from the train station to the hotel up a very winding and steep road – probably only about 1.5 km but about 150m above sea level and maybe 750 metres inland – ... read more

ALL BLACKS V AUSSIES – RUGBY WORLD CUP Another slightly chilly start to the day but the glorious blue sky promised another cracking day to come. After breakfast we headed down to the Fast Dal 1989 Bar Monterosso to confirm the All Black v Australia Rugby World Cup quarter final would be screened live – it was! I had my All Black Jersey to wear and Jeanette wore the NZ Football away top (Black with a white fern). We also had our full size New Zealand flag so we were well prepared. It was about an hour before kickoff and there was already one group of New Zealanders there – four friends who live in London and took advantage of some cheap flights to spend a few days in the area. By the time kickoff arrived ... read more

It was a bit colder this morning, but still warm enough (just) to have our breakfast in the garden. We discussed the best way to get from Monterosso to Siena - we leave for siena in a couple of days - with Fausto (our host at Giardino Incantato), he suggested rail was the most effective and offered to work out the best schedule with the least changes for us. A nice gesture which we very much appreciated, the level of service since we arrived has been outstanding. WALES V FRANCE WORLD CUP RUGBY Originally we were going to head off early to see the last two towns in Cinque Terre (Manarola and Riomaggiore). However last night we found a Pub that was screening the Wales v France Rugby World Cup semi final live – 10am our ... read more
