Italia! We made it to the beautiful city of Cinque Terre after many winding roads & hairpin turns! It is hard to believe we left the snowy Alps in the morning & reached the sunny beachside village this afternoon! The villages are totally stunning! We went out fir a big Italian meal with our group & the food was ridiculous! The kids all tried calamari which was the best I have ever had by far & anchovies! Even Rose!! I am shocked at all the foods this picky eater has tried! We finally slept in for once in this trip & hung out at the beach all day! We did some shopping & soaked up the views while the kids ate tons of gelato! I stuck with the Rose' wine which is fantastic here! This has ... read more

The first leg of our journey is over…bitter sweet. Rome was way better than I had expected. Everyone told us that it is just a big city, which is true but add a whole lot of amazing character and unbelievable history. Oh, and not to mention the food everywhere was to die for. Our last day in Rome was spent touring the Colloseum and the rest of Old Rome including the Roman Forum and the Trevi Fountain. Not being much for history I didn’t have the highest expectations, but it was absolutely jaw dropping! To see things that are more than 2,000 years old is like nothing else! It was a little nerve racking once we realized there was a train strike which was affecting all the transportation in Rome making it extremely difficult to get ... read more

We stayed in a small rented house out in the country near Beverino for our visit to Cinque Terre. After we showed an inkling of enthusiasm, the effervescent keyholders called and reserved a table for us for lunch at a restaurant up the road (Trattoria La Pineta di Polverara). This kind of thing is often a scam, but the food was some of the best I’ve had in Italy (and I’ve been cooked for by a lot of Italians!). Their specialty is ravioli, and they were filling and delicious. They also offer wine from down the road at cheap prices. I would go back to that area just to eat more ravioli! Then, we were eager to see some of Cinque Terre. After a trip to the grocery store in the mall and searching for our ... read more

My Dogs Are Barking Maybe you have not heard this expression for a while. To say ‘My dogs are barking’ means ‘My feet hurt.’ It’s an old expression that gave rise to naming of a shoe brand ‘Hush Puppies’, meaning that if you wear Hush Puppy brand shoes, then your feet won’t hurt. That how I feel after marching around the Cinque Terra today. Yesterday we entered Italy and were headed for the fabled Cinque Terra, to check out its reputation as one of the world’s best coastlines. From the motorway, bypassing Genova and the clutter of a string of Riviera traffic hazards, we looked down on some pretty spectacular indentations to the Mediterranean coastline. With a narrow continental shelf here, mountains rise directly from the seabed. In some places, there is no, or negligible coastal ... read more

There is a place where dreams are captured in real life. They drift inland on cool breezes across choppy turquoise seas tossing beneath pink clouded skies. They are captured by the rocky green hills that rise straight from the sea. The hills, worn by time and weather, stand as silent witnesses to a culture of hard work and dedication and a desire to create a visual masterpiece, a perfect mixture of nature’s harshness and man’s desire for not only sustenance, but beauty. The hills are terraced as they tumble to the sea from high above. The mortarless walls of the terraces, built over centuries by masters of stone craftsmanship, are perfectly shaped to capture the soft morning light. The fertile earth yields everything necessary to not only sustain life, but to nurture it. The terraces are ... read more

We have been offline somewhat as the Internet connection has not been good: so now for a catch up. The next stage of our journey was a train trip from La Spezia to Vernassa, the second of the 5 Terre townships on the upper west coast of Italy. They are all originally fishing villages with a famous walking track between them in the cinque Terre national park. We walked from Vernazza to the third town, Corniglia, an approx 2 hr walk along the cliff tops overlooking the sea. From there the track was closed due to landslides, so we travelled by train to each of the other two villages, Manarola and Riomaggiore, stopping to enjoy the seascapes and relax. Manarola was our favourite of these villages: the businesses were mainly closed (as is the case in ... read more

Another early start for our day trip to Cinque Terre. Cinque Terre Region is on the rugged coast of Italy, about a two hour bus ride from Florence. It's meaning is five lands and is made up of five small townships built into the rocky coast where the land meets the sea. The townships are small fishing/farming villages and these days tourism. The fisherman have very steep boat ramps and we are not sure how they launch? The terraces for planting season, surround each town and go up the steep terrain for kms. They are busy places and once you get there a train or a boat is the way to get from village to village. We had a boat booked, but there were not running due to the swell, so the trains were packed. Enjoyed ... read more

We headed out for our hike about 9:30. The first leg of the hike between the 5 towns is from Monterosso and Vernazza. Some guide books say it takes 2 hours and some say 1.5 hours. With tons of stops for photos we made it in 2 hours which is pretty good for folks on Social Security. The trail wasn't that busy or that difficult. In some places the stairs were steep and it was a little tough for Jack's knees. He found it more difficult than Petra, but it probable had more to do with his overall fitness, than anything else. The view are spectacular which is why so many people come here. We arrived in Vernazza to find it was as crowded at Monterosso. ... read more

Today was basically a travel day. We left our hotel early and while waiting for the vaporetto watched the MSC Musica being towed out of the Grand Canal. The ship is 92,000 tons, carries 2,500 passengers and is 16 stories tall. Clearly it dwarfs anything in Venice. Our guide, Cristina, explained the environmental damage ships like this cause. I would agree that ships like this have no business in the Grand Canal and it won't be too far in the future until they have no Venice to destroys. Our first train was to Milan where we able to get a nice lunch to take with us. We arrived in Monterosso at about 3. The area around the train station was so congested that we had to fight ... read more
