"It was about a 2 hour drive to get to Sacile which is where I was born so we went to my hospital to take a couple pictures. Then we went to Vitor's old school. We could not go onto the military base, but we saw it. Next, we went to our old house in Grizzo. We played on the swing set. Vitor told me a story about finding a snake on the stairs and my mom put it into alcohol. Then we went to our friend's Mara and Nicola's house. They have 2 kids named Greta and Zaira. It was very fun. We went for hot chocolate at a little place. Then we went to their house that they will be moving to. Then when Nicola came home, we went to Barcis Lake. It was ... read more

Let's start with Friday. My super inconvenient day of school happened (just kidding-I only work from 8-10:40 on Fridays). We celebrated Farsang on Friday, which is basically Carnival for Hungary. My kids all dressed up in costumes like Halloween. Except in Hungary, Halloween means scary costumes and Farsang means silly/cool costumes. Therefore my kids ranged from Flamenco dancer to football player to Zorro to Superman to Fairy to Trash can to Jungle. I wish I could post pictures. Sorry. After school I rushed home, packed my bag, met Kenzie downstairs with her bag, and headed to Arriba Taqueria: The Budapest Mexican Food. There we met Darcy and Alicia. Then Cindy showed up with her CAR and we all piled in. Since I was the navigator (as per usual), I got to sit in the front. YAY. ... read more

Geo: 45.9639, 12.6575Poor little Matthew - he had vomited and vomited all day Saturday, but after spending the night tucked up with Mummy, he woke feeling much better - he was keen to tackle croissants and ham for breakfast!Esio met us outside the B&B and we followed him to Mass, where Matteo was the altar server. It's a fairly new church, and this Sunday included a blessing of the harvest...though, when the priest took a big bowl, some salt and some vegetables, I thought he might be going to make some minestrone! Then followed a lovely day with the Pordenone cousins. We toured Esio and Antoinella's enormous house that they have recently built. It is huge, and very open plan, which is unusual for Italians. The kids played so well with Matteo (11) and Paolo (15) - ... read more

Day 12 - Friday 14th June 2013 Set another record - managed to drive through 3 different countries today. Switzerland Woke up before 5 am for an early start. Usual routine - wash, pack, load up and check the vehicle. Left campsite by 8am. This time, I set the SatNav for Trieste in Slovenia. Italy Less than half an hour's drive and I was in Como. Next headed towards Bergamo and onto many other places on the A4 before passing through Venice and onwards to neighbouring Slovenia. Slovenia The street signs were bilingual, Italian and some kind of Slavic language. The people were a mix of Italians and some were more eastern european looking. Arrived at the campsite at 6.30pm. Originally, I intended to sleep on the roof rack, but the mosquitoes got the better of ... read more

The rain of last night has cleared the skies for today and we woke to bright sunshine giving a different look to the mountain tops except for a little bit of cloud that looked like it would clear soon. We have really enjoyed our 3 nights in this very well presented apartment and it would have been good to spend another day or two here but Croatia beckons tomorrow and we need to get ourselves part way there by driving back to a location on the plains. We said goodbye to our hostess who owned the building the 4 apartments were sited in.We said we would recommend her apartments to anyone from NZ who think of coming this way.She struggled with our English when we had arrived getting her daughter to translate and leaving was no ... read more

We've finally arrived in Venice - Venezia, Italy. "I gaze on Venice with joy, on that great being born from the womb of the sea, like Pallas from the head of Jove." "Journey to Italy' W Goethe, Rome 11.09.1786. Our journey started at 3.30am with tea and toast at Hope Island and ended at 5.30am 2 days later (using the same clock setting) - some 50 hours later in a small trattoria with an Indian waiter who wanted to talk about his brother who lives in Prospect, SA and about the cricket at the MCG! What a small world we live in! We had stopovers in Brunei, Dubai and London and then a trip on the water public transport to pick us up to take us to the hotel. Wow what a place Venice is. Today I am tired we stayed up WAY too late last night drinking wine and enjoying Venice at night. What a great city. John is still upstairs in bed but here I am in the dining room having coffee and trying to wake up. God knows why? Yesterday was fantastic we just wandered and then around 11 we decided to buy this 36 hour pass for the water busses. So, we went out to Lido, all along the Grand Canal and finally out to Murano. We got off to take photos and gawk a few times but made it a point not consult the map or guide book too much and just enjoy this great place. It was a good decision. Murano Island was interesting we stopped there and watched glass blowers at work. Once place ... read more

We were up and out the door just about 8:00 a.m. on this warm Sunday morning. The streets were very quiet and we packed our bags and made our way to the subway and to the Termini, the main train station. We were booked onto a train heading to Venice. I was very excited to get to see some of the Italian countryside. One of the down sides to this place is the upspeakable amounts of grafitti. Aside from the speciall areas of the city the majority of buildings are COVERED in grafitti. It is really disgusting and you have to force yourself to ignore it because it is truly a blight. There is nothing artisitic our beautiful about it in my opinion. In fact it distracts from the environment totally. That said, once out of ... read more

Hello all you beautiful people, Okay so the Italian vacanza 3 week extravaganza kicked off to a flying start with a 7 hour drive to Muggia in Trieste to reach the Adriatic Sea. We hit the beach straight away only to discover that there is no sand, but stones!! Massive effort getting in and out of the sea, as it is so painful to walk on them! We went to a popular seafood restaurant, but as I don’t like fish it was spaghetti pomodorro for one. The next day (Monday) I had to face the fear and get on a boat to go 30 minutes across the Adriatic Sea to Trieste. Normally I avoid boats like the plaque because I suffer horribly from seasickness, but I had no choice. I had to starve myself at breakfast, ... read more

Maria Chiara had been invited to two weddings in Italy two weeks apart from each other in the second half of June, with me as her Plus 1. What better excuse to escape the wettest British early summer in recorded history and get involved in the Italian heat wave! Maria Chiara comes from Udine in Friuli - it may be very Northern but it can still be hot; during these weeks Italians had to search for increasingly formidable titles for the barrage of weather systems that brought cloudless skies and increasing heat. We arrived at the beginning of the "Anticiclone Africano" (African anti-cyclone) and left during the "Caronte" named after the boatman who rides damned souls over the River Styx on the way to the gates of the underworld! Italians know how to do weddings. Renaissance ... read more
