"It was about a 2 hour drive to get to Sacile which is where I was born so we went to my hospital to take a couple pictures. Then we went to Vitor's old school. We could not go onto the military base, but we saw it. Next, we went to our old house in Grizzo. We played on the swing set. Vitor told me a story about finding a snake on the stairs and my mom put it into alcohol. Then we went to our friend's Mara and Nicola's house. They have 2 kids named Greta and Zaira. It was very fun. We went for hot chocolate at a little place. Then we went to their house that they will be moving to. Then when Nicola came home, we went to Barcis Lake. It was a very pretty lake. Then we went back home and had a good dinner. Daddy's Comments:
A tight fit in the care with equivalent of over 75 bottles of wine and we made the less than 2 hour drive to Sacile, the city where Sofia was born. It is a beautiful little town, but we came for one
reason only, to make a pit stop at the Ospedale Civile where Sofia was born. At that time the US Air Force had rented 2 floors for OB, Peds, and Surgery, and it was here that Sofia came into the world. We took a short video at the same place we did 3 years prior.

Next stop, Aviano, the place where I worked for 3 years. However, no longer being part of the military, we did not have the chance to go inside, but drove around the perimeter so Vitor could see where he went to 1st grade. He had spent pre-school and kindergarten at the local Italian Asilo, but did go to school 1 year on base.
Then, it was the beautiful 15 minute drive along the base of the dolomites to the town where Vitor lived for 3 years and Sofia spent the first 4 months of her life - Grizzo (di Montereale). We made a stop by our old house so Sofia and Vitor could swing on the swings. Loved the park in front of our house. A few blocks away was the home of Mara and Nicola who
were our best Italian friends during our 3 years there. With Greta a couple years younger than Vitor (and Vitor still remembers her beating up on him) and Zaira a little older than Sofia the four got along great right away. Mara took us to a place for hot chocolate and then to see their house they were going to move into in a few months. It was very near and was beautiful with a big backyard.
Then Nicola arrived.....Both Mara and Nicola did not seem to age, though when I looked at their kids start to feel like I am getting old (Sofia would be quick to say I am). We took off to lake Barci, a beautiful turquoise blue lake in the Dolomites and only about 15 minutes from Grizzo. While we had fun taking pics by the lake and driving around it, we were bummed that my favorite bar, Aquila Nera was not open. We then had a wonderful dinner, cooked by Nicola's mom, and drank a lot of wine which I had picked up "along the way". Sofia referred to Nicola as an Italian Sean and I agreed.

They were all very happy to see us as we were them. While we were leaving the next morning for Slovenia, we would return 3 days later where we would spend the last 2 nights of our trip.....
Instead of another blog for those nights, we include it here except for our day trip to Venice. The 2 other nights we spent at Mara and Nicola's was more of the same, great food, great fun and a lot of laughs (and wine). We had another great meal cooked by Nicola's mother and the final night, Nicola and I got Pizza for Take Out. Nicola was extremely helpful as we spent about 3 hours, yes 3 hours packing my 70ish bottles of wine into 6 suitcases/duffle bags. Yes, it was quite a feat but we did it. I had purposely planned to get rid of some old clothes on this trip and Vitor and Sofia did the same, so we made enough room for the wine and packed our dirty clothes for the carry-ons. Nicola and I weighed each bag to make sure that they were no more than 23 bags.....We did it with about 2
kilos combined on all bags. A lot more work than anticipated, but would it "pay off"
