Italy Day 12, Saturday, October 15, Ercolano, Herculaneum, Naples Archaeological Museum Many of us took an optional tour to Herculaneum and the Naples Archaeological Museum. We left early in the morning for the Herculaneum ruins, in order to avoid the expected mass of tour groups. Pompeii sees about 50,000 tourists a day from tours like ours as well as tours from cruise ships. Herculaneum is much less popular but still we needed to be ahead of the crowd to have an opportunity to see the ruins more or less unobstructed. Passing Mt Vesuvius, the only active volcano in mainland Europe, we were reminded that it is a dormant volcano. Each region surrounding Vesuvius is constantly monitoring for seismic activity indicating a possible eruption, very important to the roughly 500,000 people who live in this danger zone. ... read more

Paysage absolument majestueux. Nous avons fait la connaissance ... read more

Day 268 Wednesday 12th October 2016 – Florence to Naples I may have warned Scott about Naples but secretly I am so excited to be returning, I loved it and hope it lives up to those memories. First we have to get there, grabbed a bite at the station and waited to board our train, it was another high speed one that took 3 hours. The train got to speeds of 299 km/hr as we whizzed through the countryside arriving in Naples at 2.08pm. Exiting Naples train station landed me back 30 years into the chaos and grittiness, this is not a pretty city on the surface but once you look a little closer you see the charm, while making sure you are not hit by a motor scooter. Our hotel is situated in ... read more

Mediterranean Day 16 Oct 9 We have arrived at the port of Naples overnight. It's raining this morning, but it's the very first rain on the entire trip, so it's hard to complain. The showers are mostly over with by the time we disembark, but the roads and cobblestones are slippery. We meet our guide Victorio on the peer. On the bus and on the way to Pompeii. Mount Vesuvius stands ominously on our left throughout the drive from Naples to Pompeii. It has rings of clouds around it which look like smoke. I imagine that any reader of this missive knows something of the story of Pompeii. In 79 A.D., Vesuvius erupted catastrophically, first asphyxiating most of the living beings in the city by hot, poisonous gases and then burying the city in volcanic ash. ... read more

Bad internet connections stopped us writing travel blogs. This is the first time anywhere that we were not able to do that. Anyway we right now and carry on with our next stop we had and that was Naples. A city definitely different from other places in Italy. Sorry to say it is a very dirty place, where people have no pride in their city. They do whatever comes up in their mind. They park where they want , drive where they want, ignore all traffic lights and if they carry things not wanted anymore they just throw it away wherever they are. A real pity for it is such a wonderful place with beautiful churches, and monuments. We saw places that goes beyond your imagination. As a pedestrian you’re the best of. People cross the ... read more

We had set aside six weeks to explore southern Italy. After only two weeks we had our fill and left. Rome is a fairly pleasant but big city. Lots of visitors go there. We found their tourist industry is geared around package tours and guided day tours; dissemination of information for independent travellers wasn’t so well-established. At 20 kilometres or so in diameter, Rome’s urban sprawl appears to have been stalled by the artificial boundary set in place by a very good ring road. The first few times we used that road, it worked efficiently as a cross city commuter corridor. However, when we tried it out at 9 am on a Monday morning it was in gridlock, with traffic merging onto the big ring road at every kilometre. Imagine a six lane carpark stretching 68 ... read more

While Mark and I were at the pool yesterday, the captain had come on the loud speaker and said that due to high winds and rough seas, it was decided to change our port for tomorrow to Naples instead of Sorrento. All of the tours would be the same but Naples would be a better starting point. John the cruise director came on a few minutes later and said, “All excursions will be the same, no worries on that, just check the Passages (the daily flyer of what is happening on the ship) to see what your revised departure time will be. Our original departure time was 8 a.m. and the revised one was 8:15 so not much difference. We got up, had breakfast (no sunshine for Mark today, thanks very much!) and got to the ... read more

This is the third ‘episode’ of another of 'our' travel experiences. The collective ‘episodes’ (this being the third) describe our journey from our arrival in London, England (from the 2nd week of May) for an extended holiday primarily in Italy. After 9 days in London, we flew to Rome to begin a short visit to that city before hiring a car and deciding to point it in the direction of Naples. If you were to read our previous 'blogs' you'll be aware we tend to take the crazy option - going where the road looks like it might go somewhere interesting / delightful / challenging / etc. That said, we do undertake research before departing Australia to give us some background options of possibilities. But, 'planning' an itinerary from an armchair is fraught with difficulties. Eventually, ... read more

Hello from Naples – not the one in Florida. We docked in the port this morning about 7:00. Before that we were up and getting ourselves started for a full day. We had a good breakfast in the Horizon Court and then headed to the Princess Theater to get ready for our excursion. This has become something of a regular routine, except on shore days or when the ship has a late arrival in port. So we were pretty much prepared for today. Our excursion today was titled “Sorrento & Amalfi Coast Cruise”. Our group was called and we reported to our bus for a drive through Naples and out to the peninsula which points toward Capri. We drove past Mt Vesuvius, but the top was shrouded in clouds and we could not see the peak. ... read more

Today we left Sorrento and went to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Pompeii and Herculaneum were old cities that were buried when the nearby volcano Mt Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. We visited Pompeii first which was found in 1748. It was completely covered in ash up to 75 feet which is why it wasn't found for such a long time. It is a massive city and it would take all day just to explore, so we only saw a little bit of it. We saw the amphitheatre, the training grounds for the Gladiators and walked down the main streets of town. They had put stepping stones down the middle of the roads so people could use them to walk over as when it rained as you did not want to step on the roads as that's where ... read more
