Motorhome News from Europe 18. Italy. March 2005 Sicily & Southern Italy. Pompei, Herculaneum and Naples (Napoli) Our first day camped near Palermo was a rest day, catching up with the laundry and shopping. We were to stay there for the next four nights. The next day it rained heavily non-stop and we were able to get to know the neighbours. One couple from London had already been there for several days, camping in an old Ford panel-van with no insulation. The cold nights were the least of their problems. Breathing alone was causing condensation to run down the walls, soaking their matress and blankets. That’s the sort of story that makes us fully appreciate the luxury of our Autotrail motorhome! Then came the day to visit Palermo. Suffice to say that we spent about eight ... read more

No time to do a full entry because we are at what they call an "internet point" and there is only one computer. So far we have made it safe and sound to Napoli and have spent the afternoon browsing some of the little shops around town. Tomorrow we will spend the day at Pompeii. So instead of an entry, here are some more pictures! Ciao, Jackie and Sarah... read more

Naples is useful as a base for visiting the surrounding attractions. These include Pompeii, a 9th century Roman ruin that has been perfectly preserved and visited by tourists alike. Further south lies the beautiful and rugged Amalfi coast, a summer resort and haven for the wealthy. Accessible by an hours ferry ride is also the island of Capri. ... read more

Chapter 14 The quest for Napoli’s nice bit! Two weeks had flown by as they contemplated the trip so far over yet another extremely good breakfast. They were determined to give Naples another go and try to go with the flow of the traffic. Surely there must be some positives and they were determined to seek it out! The first stop as had been planned was the Archaeological Museum, just off Via Dante. It was Sunday the 15th February and the traffic didn’t seem too bad, maybe St.Valentine had kept them all away. The museum at 13 euros each offered a treasure trove of mainly Roman and Greek findings. Set on two floors and a basement, this huge showcase offered some fabulous exhibits. The best ones being the mosaics, the mummified mummies and the secret cabinet ... read more

Chapter 12 Back in old Napoli - that’s appalling They left the hostel and caught the 8.53am Eurostar from Florence to Naples via Rome. The train was not quite it’s English equivalent but very comfortable nonetheless (and more leg room). Rather bizarrely this was the first Eurostar Martin had taken since leaving the company (Eurostar UK LTD.) back in December. He headed to the bar and went to order some drinks, to be met by a young girl called Raffael who used to work on board the Eurostar back in the UK. What a very small world it was as they reminisced about the people back in London. What were the chances of that! Once more, the landscapes were spectacular especially between Rome and Naples. Three hours later they found themselves pulling into Napoli Centrale. Positoned ... read more

Naples is not that impressive, at least from our first glance perspective. As soon as we landed on the marina from Capri ferry ride, we had to walk across a city to our designated hostel, including through one of those LONG tunnels that were loud, smell and not pedestrian friendly. Walking by several pictures of people with flowers around them, all of the sudden it occurred to me; I do not want to have my picture added to the pile, so we better paid more attention to these crazy Italian drivers who were zooming by within only inches from us. Reaching the Bay of Naples area by dusk, we still need to walk for at least another two miles to get into a secluded area where the HI-Hostel International Naples is located. We would use our ... read more

From Rapallo we travelled onto Pisa, toured Rome, before arriving in Naples. We stayed a couple of days in the small coastal town of Sorrento near Naples (lovely place), and were looking to commence our travels once more. The plan this time was that we would catch an overnight train from Naples to Florence, and so saving money on a hotel, as well as time travelling. But this was not good enough for a couple of master budget savers like us. No, we would go one step further and not book an overly expensive sleeper ticket, but instead catch a standard train, and sleep in the virtually deserted carriage that, in the middle of the night, it would “obviously” be. Before catching the train that evening we had spent the day climbing Mt Vesuvius and investigating ... read more

Approached the ferry building/dock hours before departure. A lone traveler was sitting there, waiting for the ferry to Sardinha. He was a German, who was traveling by bicycle. I envied his independence. If I had the time, I would have gone with him. But time restraints would only allow me to go one place or another, and I had to return to Palermo. Had been there a few years earlier when a friend of mine took me from one side Sicily to the other... but it was a rushed trip, and I knew I needed to return when I was on my own. This was the time. So I bought a one way ticket (about €40 if I remember correctly) Cabins were all sold out, so it was steerage for me. If you want a cabin, ... read more
